Darn, I paid $750 forty years ago for Life.

Of course, it has paid back partly in no yearly dues.

The $300 Life Membership deal happens about twice a year, depending on how their regular membership drive is going.

When I paid the $300 fee, it was a referral program.  You needed an NRA Life Member to "refer" you.  That's one reason you might not hear about it.  Only Life Members are marketed to.

I have a feeling the program will start again in a month or two.  You might be better off to wait if they only have the $500 or $1000 Life memberships now.

If I see the referral program again, I'll post it.

they usually offer the $300 life memberships if you show up at the annual NRA shows.

What was this latest $300 membership drive?  Personally I haven't heard of the $300 sponsored memberships in about a couple of years.  I used to sign up a lot of people, but haven't seen it in awhile.  As mentioned, discounted drives usually happen at NRA events, but I didn't see anything at this last Friends of NRA dinner, but I really wasn't looking for it.  I have always seen the drives at the annual NRA show and at SHOT show.  I will mention that they have gotten a bit wiser and the NRA solicitation now calls from a (808) 800-xxxx phone number.

Just join now at 20 bucks, then wait for the next sale.

this works, too.  I did this myself.

If you get the discounted upgrade Life membership, NRA can apply your 1-year payment to the upgrade so you don't pay more than the $300 -- as long as your 1-year membership is still in effect.

And then every so often they offer special prices for Endowment and Patron memberships!

Overall, best thing as I understand it to do for 2A is NRA Life Membership and make additional contributions to the NRA-ILA.

If you were renewing your account for another year or more, you'd have to pay the full price, since the discount is for new members only.

For Life membership, it's an upgrade, and applies to both current and new members.  Once you have Life status, no more renewals! :)
