I moved to Fern Forest a little over a year ago and love it here. Great neighbors, even though our closest neighbor is several hundred feet away. Fern Forest is 12.5 sq miles with a population of about 600. Recently read this article which named Fern Forest the most dangerous town in Hawaii and Eden Roc 2nd. Both are subdivisions not towns and Eden Roc is the one next to FF. I had to laugh when I read the comments, especially the one about my area being heavily armed, which is probably true. I hear gunshots all the time. Today I went into my backyard and fired 75 rounds with my Glock 19 practicing my draw from concealment because of living in such a dangerous area. LOL.

I am quite familiar with Fern Forest. When I lived on the BI I had numerous clients living out there. Same for Eden Roc. I lived in Fern Acres. I don't doubt that everyone there is armed. I didn't feel my life was in danger at all when I was driving through there to my client's homes. Though the first few times I got stink eye from everyone who I saw. But after a few times that stopped. But most dangerous?

There are a lot of problems in the Puna district in general. Fern Acres and Eden Roc do have problem people. As far as violent crime for the state of Hawaii the Puna district no doubt would rank high. I will say that the theft and burglaries would definitely be at or near the top for Hawaii as a whole. Residents and ranchers are getting hit constantly and my parents ranch just last week had 27 T-posts stolen right out of the ground. The drug problem is rampant. Many people who have not been personally a victim of some type of crime may often not be as aware or have less of a stake in the interest of what is happening around them.
As for gunshots, of course you hear it especially every Saturday and Sunday as the nearby range is always active. Plus I know a ton of hunters and shooters in the area in general. I would be one of them when I am in town and pretty much all of the neighbors in my area are also.
