Title: Firearms bills up for third reading....will likely pass
Post by: HiCarry on March 07, 2016, 04:03:16 PM
I know this is last minute, but just got off the phone with one of our supportive legislators. 5 bills are scheduled for a third reading tomorrow and will likely pass if we cannot get more legislators to vote no on them.

The bills are:
HB1813 - Firearms prohibitions for those on the terror watch list
HB625 - Firearms prohibitions for those convicted of misdemeanor sexual assault or stalking
HB2629 - The "RAPBACK" bill or continuous background checks
HB626 - Carrying a firearm while drinking
HB2632- Mental illness (MH-1) bill with firearms confiscation

We need to bomb our representatives with phone calls to their office asking them to vote no and to remind them this is an election year and that their vote will be remembered. And while you can email them as well, it really needs to be a telephone campaign and it needs to happen immediately. Especially if you are in Karl Rhodes district. Please remember to tell them you are a registered voter.

And, to be most effective, concentrate your efforts on those that are likely to vote yes. If your Rep. is noted below, we don't need to call them as they are already supportive and are looking to garner the 10 or 11 more no votes to kill the bill:
Ken Ito
Sharon Har
Isaac Choy
James Tokioka
Bob McDermott
Henry Aquino
Ty CUllen
Ryan Yamane
Jo Jordon
Lynn DeCoite
Calvin Say
Marcus Oshiro
Derek Kawakami

I might have to actually go in person and testify.... Cannot spend all day there but maybe I could hit them if they were back to back...

These are not up for hearings so no testimony will be accepted. These are reading on the floor and those legislators who were considering voting yes need to be notified ASAP that such a yes vote will be remembered come election time. This is especially important for those in Karl Rhodes district.

My rep is one on the list. I wish there was someone I could call. Bills are supposed to get softened up and more reasonable after a few readings but these klunkers stayed fairly Stasi somehow. It feels like they know it's back-door confiscation and have made up their minds to manifest that destiny as quickly and efficiently as possible. Is there's something they know that we don't?

"Americans for Responsible Solutions" (Gabby Giffords and Mark Kelly) have sent out an email alert, that includes a link to an automated email to Hawaii reps urging them to vote FOR (in their words):

HB 1813 - Preventing known or suspected terrorists from purchasing guns.

HB 625 - Prohibiting those convicted of misdemeanor stalking and sexual assault crimes from purchasing firearms.

Meanwhile my email inbox has the following emails regarding these bills from NRA, GOA, SAF: zero, zip, zilch, nada. Just sayin'...

Yes, HRA did send out an alert about the bills yesterday afternoon, but how many people does that reach, and how many people will act on it (without an automated response option), compared to ARS email list of millions of "gun control" supporters (to whom they fail to mention the "downsides" of the bills, aka "lie")?

I understand the suggestion to "be most effective" to write and call your own specific representative. I wrote a specific email to my rep, but also sent a generic "vote NO" email to all the reps (yeah, even those on the "good rep" list. Here is the list in case anyone else wants to use it (this list may not be totally accurate, it is from December 15, 2015. I will try to double check it shortlycurrent as of 03/08/16):

I had emailed my rep about this before and sent this email again today.  I am sharing this here in case it helps others know what to write.

I wanted to write about these bills that will be voted on today.  I hope that you had a chance to look through them and vote NO on these bills.

HB1813 - Firearms prohibitions for those on the terror watch list.
HB625 - Firearms prohibitions for those convicted of misdemeanor sexual assault or stalking
HB2629 - Rapback bill or continuous background checks
HB626 - Carrying a firearm while drinking
HB2632 - Mental illness bill with firearms confiscation

While the intent of the bills are good, there are flawed and should be killed before going further.

HB1813 - a secret government list that no one has access to, allows the police to seize personal property without due process.
2/26 testimonies, 7 were in support, 86 in opposition

HB625 - in the words of Supreme Court Justice Thomas, "This is a misdemeanor violation. It suspends a constitutional right. Can you give me another area where a misdemeanor violation suspends a constitutional right?"
2/25 testimonies, 17 in support, 24 in opposition

HB2629 - why are firearm owners subjected to criminal background checks?
2/11 testimonies, 1 in support, 5 in opposition

HB626 - this bill is vague and does not set parameters on what constitutes "possession" or "under the influence".  "Possession" of a firearm while drinking alcohol at home could conceivably result in arrest.
2/26 testimonies, 8 in support, 98 in opposition

HB2632 - This bill needs to be re-worked.  A soldier returning from war or a woman who is raped and suffers PTSD and have overcome them, are denied their constitutional right to own a firearm to protect themselves.
2/10 testimonies, 4 in support, 40 in opposition
2/23 testimonies, 16 in support, 122 in opposition

Please vote NO to these bills.  These bills are flawed, has little community support and need to be re-worked.    Please bring some sense into the voting of these bills today.

Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to convince my rep (voted Yes).  See update on the bills here.

Little follow up on my rep.
Just received  Community Survey questionnaire form from Pouha.
Of the 11 questions, question #8 was "Do you support increased gun regulations in Hawaii."
Nice of him to ask, we'll see if he listens.   ;)

Well, since the testimonies on these bills were incredibly lopsided AGAINST, and they've made it this far anyway, I wouldn't hold my breath...

It's only true that "the testimonies on these bills were incredibly lopsided AGAINST" if you happen to believe that "one person equals one vote".

The reality is that your and my votes/preferences/opinions only count for one vote each, but the preferences and opinions from government bureaucrats (HPD, Attorney General, etc.) and leftist statist organizations (League of Socialist Women Voters, Americans for (Ir)Responsible Solutions, Center for Communist American Progress, etc.) count for approximately 500 votes each. Thus while the testimony would appear to be 107 to 6 in our favor, in the minds of our elite legislators who are far more intelligent that us and thus know what's best for us, it's actually 3000 to 107 in their FAVOR. Thus the unanimous, or near unanimous votes in these committees. It's called Democratic Socialist Math (even Bernie Sanders might agree that it's skewed, given the disparity in the votes he's received and the delegates Clinton has received... yesterday in the Hawaii Democratic caucus Sanders got 70% of the vote, to Clinton's 30%, yet Sanders only got 58% of the delegates to Clinton's 42%. See how that works? And they're okay with that!).  :shaka:

Compile and tabulate all the numbers so we can use this AGAINST them during the election cycle.  Nothing sells change like a bunch of pissed off people.
