A couple more numbers would be helpful.

Guns per capita and numbers of shootings.

I am pretty sure that guns per capita is up as well, not just guns total however a mere drop in the number of homicides does not inherently mean a drop in violence. If more people are getting shot but more are being saved by advanced medicine then the conclusion might not be accurate.
