HB2632 HD2 SD2 Firearms Disqualification; Mental Illness; Police
RELATING TO FIREARMS. Requires firearms owners who have been disqualified from owning a firearm and ammunition due to a diagnosis of significant behavioral, emotional, or mental disorder or for treatment for organic brain syndromes, or due to emergency or involuntary hospitalization, to immediately surrender their firearms and ammunition to the Chief of Police. Requires the chief of police to seize firearms and ammunition if a disqualified individual fails to surrender the firearms and ammunition and the person receives notice of disqualification. (SD2)

Now this is just plain silly:
"...or due to emergency or involuntary hospitalization, to immediately surrender their firearms and ammunition to the Chief of Police. ..."
Why is someone who experiences an unexpected health issue like a heart attack or stroke automatically deemed ineligible to own a firearm? Again, why is someone guilty until proven innocent?
The legislators need to explain their thinking and justify why they want people who need to go to the hospital to surrender their guns. Sounds like just another way to limit our rights.
Come one, pass some bills that will make a real dent in crime.

This bill has been through various committees in both houses of the legislature. It has been pointed out to the various committee members that they could clarify and limit the application of the proposed law if they added the wording (in bold): "...or due to emergency or involuntary hospitalization as a result of a mental health issue, to immediately surrender their firearms and ammunition to the Chief of Police. ...". Not that that change would address the "due process" issues, but they have chosen not to amend the wording. Why not? What would they have to gain by leaving it so open ended? The language is simple and clear, and they are intent on leaving it exactly as it is. Our "public servants" making sure "the people" know their place.

House Bill, HB 2632, Emergency hospitalization requiring removal of firearms, is scheduled for a Conference Committee meeting tomorrow, Thursday, April 21, at 8:30 a.m. The bill results in immediate removal of an individuals firearms for any emergency hospitalization. Senate Bill, SB 2954, Rapback was heard in Conference Committee today. The Senate Conference Managers (Senators Nishihara, Keith-Agaran,Espero) recommended that the Senate agree to the House amendments.
