2aHawaii Name: Ren
Score: 96-1X (stupid ass 9s :grrr: :grrr: :grrr: :grrr:), Class 2,
Scope: none, Iron sights CLE GI front sight post, .038 rear with B Jones lense (+.5)
Rifle make: Rock RIver lower with CLE A4 rimfire upper, Ammo: Eley Sport
Weather conditions: good
Excuses: Bad ammo, not so good day, wasn't wearing favorite underwear, I didn't drink enough coffee, over 40 and felt phawkin grouchy, been doing this for too long - should be master by now, I still don't have a home with an infinity pool on a ridge...
-
Nice shooting ren.
-
Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn!!! That is one fine target, Ren! That's gonna be hard to beat. But I'm up for it....
-
That is standing up with iron sights?! Very impressive. I would be lucky to have all 10 hit the cardboard.
-
Daaaaaayum!! I wouldn't be able to do that with an optic much less irons. Great shooting Ren!!
-
Hey guys, we have a challenge here. One of us has to beat Ren's score. You won't know what you can do until you try!!! I will try and shoot it next Sunday. C'mon everyone. Ren has issued the challenge. It is up to us to try and beat his score!!!
-

Actually, IMO, it's easier with good iron sights. Or an optic set to a very low power.
-
I didn't issue any challenge to anyone. I just did my normal practice routine today and saw this post. Started off the day with being grouchy as always because I didn't grab my usual caffeine fix. But it was still a good day because I didn't use my AK - I used my AR :D
I watched this video and applied what retired Marine Ken Roxburgh said. It works but I need more practice. Try it. He starts talking about standing at about 14:10
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPVVeKY_puY&list=PL4EBA17557DDC2CC7&index=9
and if you're shooting irons...get a fat front sight! "precision sights" don't equate to a skinny front sight or the like
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gp69CCY71d4&list=PL4EBA17557DDC2CC7&index=4
-
Also notice how his rifle, arm, elbow, hip, leg go straight down to the ground? Great Vids!
I always fight with NPA. I end up trying to rush things and forget about it. If everything is right, the rifle pretty much aims itself. All that's left is to press the trigger without disturbing that position/sight picture.

Lol only the Ol Skool guys will get that AK remark. I like that.
I have some Willams Peep Sights. When you say a fat front sight, would you recommend replacing the front insert with a thick post style one? I'll watch the videos later tonight

I'm actually looking forward to shooting this. Not because I think I can beat Ren but just to practice standing more. I shoot a bunch of position shooting. Of course standing is by far my weakest position.

I'm not familiar with the Williams sights. The lesson to be learned is that the final object you should focus HARD on is the front sight before you press the trigger. You should be able to focus on it hard enough to see the minute details of the front sight. A fat enough front sight will help you focus on it. For years, I thought I was focusing on the front sight but my eye was focused somewhere between the front sight and the target. A normal human can only focus on one plane at a time.

Thanks for the explanation. My initial thought was that a larger blade would cover more of the target as opposed to a thinner one. My thinking was on the lines of how target scopes, like Weaver and Sightrons, use really thin cross hairs. I guess if a thicker front site keeps your POA consistent, that should produce a better group.
My rifle has what some call "peep sights" similar to those used by biathlon shooters. I have various inserts to replace the front with. I guess I have some experimenting to do and a lot of learning to shoot irons.

I still have the original Redfield Olympic Peep Sights for my Annie. I was thinking of putting them back on her. Not sure that scope I have on her is really doing me much good......

For the most precision I like to use these inserts.

I don't use one that is too small. I leave a fair amount of white around the target black. It is very easy for the eye to center circles inside of circles. Just be sure to focus clear on the front aperture and no the target black.

Thanks Heavies, pretty close to how I've been doing it. I used a smaller front sight so the white area was smaller so I could tell my POA was off slightly. I in no ways profess to be a good irons shooter especially standing. I have a lot to learn but always willing to do the work to get better.

I can appreciate how good Ren shot his target above.
its not easy shooting from offhand position
I haven't shot bullseye rifle standing in years, and i was never that good at it back then either
here's what i got today
no excuses. i'm just not that good at it. need a lot more practice.
actually i did better than i thought considering the muzzle kept moving. a lot.
I might try again this month, but i think i just need more shooting time standing.

You will move. The trick is to break the shot while you are in the black or while the sights are going into the black. Remember you don't need to shoot a bad shot. You are in control. Don't accept bad shots. Learn to call your shots. It will take some time to learn and is a perishable skill to some people (like me).

It's going to be a little while before I can give this a try but I'm certain your target is better than what I can do. Hoping we get a little more participation than we did last month. Let's face it, this 22 stuff is fun.

let me know if you still can't open it and I'll repost it as a different type of file.
I will be going this Sunday and I will be shooting this. I'm going to try two different guns and strategies.

Thanks guys I figured it out. It was in my download folder under a weird heading. I was planning on doing the usual silhouette on Sun morning then moving over to the rifle side at 10ish. Shooting sports fair might change the plans a little. If anyone wants to shoot some 22s and shoot the chit, message me.

Nice target! I think we all need some practice!!! :shake: :shake: :shake:
I still have to get mine up on the Internet.
-
FYI, default printing will cause the target to be 1/4" smaller so I set it to print "actual size" in the printing options in acrobat. Might give you a few extra points in your quest to beat ren.

Any advantage I can get I will take!
I don't have my targets in front of me but if my memory is correct the best target I shot is a 91-1x. I'll try and remember to put them up tonight.
-
I'll have my meetup group shoot the target this weekend. I'll go with quantity over quality.

Nice shooting. You too JHanawahine. I shot at the Shilhouette side in the morning then had to leave for a Father's Day lunch. The wind was crazy. Aside from wind affecting the POI, the wind blowing my skinny arse would be hard enough. ;D. Hope to give it try this weekend. I'm certain my frame will get some damage.
-
Do they allow metal frames at 50 yards? I have the frame I bought from fabtek for the 100 yard gongs. On that note, will they let me use the gongs on the metal frame if I am just going to shoot .22?
I can't shoot well and worse when I am standing. I know if I use my new wooden frame, I am going to tear it up.
If I can use the metal one, and if my friend goes on Sunday, I will give it a try.

Two weeks ago, I set up small steel targets on the 50, and larger steel targets on the 100. Can only use rimfire rifles on the 50 yd steel plates. We were hitting the 6" steel plate at 100 yds with a Mosin M44. Next time, I'm using the 8"!! :D
If you are unsure, always best to ask the RSO for their approval. Better to get permission ahead of time. Just tell em what caliber you'll be shooting.

Been working a shit ton of 12hr shifts lately and I wasn't even sure I would be able to try this month. I got some time away for just a quicky and only attempted the target once. My results where less than stellar.

Looking at the grouping, I probably should have adjusted my scope. I didn't have time to try again though. Haha
-
Also. Can anyone tell me how much is .1 MIL converted to MOA? This scope is in MILS on the turrets and I'm so used to MOA I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around it. Hahaha.

.1 Mil is equal to .36" at 100yrds or .18" @ 50yrds. For me it's easier to think in Metric system. .1 mil equals to 1cm at 100m. So forth. It just take a little getting used to going from MOA to MIL

OK. So about 1/3 MOA. Got it! Thank you!
As for thinking metric.... Sorry, grew up in the wrong era, probably just before they started forcing Europe down our throats. ;D I have no idea about a centimeter nor what it compares to... inches, yards, miles. That's all I can picture in my head. LOL.

Heavies, that grouping would fit right into the black circle. Adjust your scope and your in the hunt.

Yes really good to see an increase in participation, Unfortunatly I was off island for the most part and wasn't able to give it a try this month. I wouldn't have done very well. I'm looking forward to whatever every month brings and sharing info about rimfire shooting.
