In the event of an active shooter incident on UH Manoa campus, DPS the recommends following:
RUN:
If there is an accessible escape path, attempt to evacuate the premises.
- Have an escape route and plan in mind
- Evacuate regardless of whether others agree to follow
- LEAVE your belongings behind
- Help others escape, if possible
- Prevent individuals from entering an area where the active shooter may be
- Do not attempt to move wounded people
- Call 911 when you are safe
- Follow instructions of any police officers
HIDE:
If evacuation is not possible, find a place to hide.
- Lock the door
- Blockade the door with heavy furniture
- Turn off any lights to make the area appear unoccupied
- Silence your cell phone, turn off the vibrate feature
- If safe to do so, use phone in silent mode to receive campus messages that may be sent through the Emergency Notification system
- Turn off any source of noise (i.e., radio, TV)
- Hide behind large items (i.e., cabinets, desks)
- Do not go near doors or windows
- Remain calm and quiet
- If possible, call 911 to alert police to the active shooter’s location
- If you can’t speak, leave the line open
- Remain under cover until the threat is passed or you have been advised by law enforcement that it is safe to exit
Your hiding place should:
- Be out of the shooter’s view
- Provide protection if shots are fired in your direction (i.e., an office with a closed and locked door)
- Not trap you or restrict your options for movement
FIGHT:
As a LAST RESORT, and only when your life is in imminent danger, attempt to disrupt and/or incapacitate the active shooter by:
- Acting as aggressively as possible against the assailant
- Throwing items and improvising weapons
- Yelling
- Committing to your actions
- Do not hesitate (once you decide to fight, you must be prepared to do whatever you can to protect yourself)
-
Gun free Zone = victims
Good thing they reminded everyone that guns are not allowed on campus. That'll ruin the whole plan for mayhem!
