I'm taking off the moderator hat in this thread.
:wtf: Hawaii? The rest of the country seems to be pulling their heads out of their ass, yet Hawaii continues to push it up further! Sam Slom is unseated, now NO republicans in the state senate to represent 2A! Karl (Marx) Rhodes 75%, Wil (put you on a list) Espero 61%...... Shitz 74%? ??? Hanabata 72% More of the same.... I am utterly disgusted!!!! :grrr:
Better get ready for a fight folks. Cali is going to look like a free nation compared to what we will be soon facing!
Remember, it take years, if not DECADES, to appeal or repeal unconstitutional law, that is if anyone has enough time and capitol to fight it!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was unpleasant but not unexpected. The problem is things haven't gotten bad enough here yet. We got a glimpse of the future with furlough Fridays during the financial crisis but people didn't get the message that the parasitic political class is setting us up for a huge fall. It's the welfare state mentality and people still think that we can tax ourselves into prosperity, but when the Federal money inevitability dries up there is no sustainable business model here and pension funds go bankrupt, etc. It's a really bad situation made a lot worse by the voter suppression here. ID laws, busted machines, closed precincts, untrained/unhelpful workers all lead to long lines and voter apathy which is exactly what the center's of power want.

On the bright side people dumped the charter amendment that extended term limits, even though the amendment was worded to appear the OPPOSITE of what it actually was. So it's not like the voters are completely stupid.

Also that Anosh guy took a big dent out of Kaneshiro's margins without actually running, that crazy Aulani chick managed to grab 20% of the vote against Tulsi despite being certifiably insane, and of course Djou almost taking down Caldwell based on rail rage alone.
Trump was able to capitalize on the growing dissatisfaction, but locally nobody has yet been able to do the same. It's probably some combination of the humble anti boat rocking culture, going up against multiple entrenched monopolies, and the realization any intelligent potential candidate would make that our problems are actually predicaments. There are simply no long term solutions that don't require painful sacrifices.

And what is with the low turnout on absentee voting?! They can't even be bothered to fill out the ballot in the comfort of their own homes and mail it?! WTF.

I am wondering how prolific voter fraud is here in Hawaii. Is there really 70+% in favor of the likes of Hanabusa and Schatz? And do the people really truly want to be taxed into poverty by the money pit rail? ???

I think there is a lot of it going on but we turn a blind eye to it much like the Big Island mayor and his pCard.

I have to believe that a lot of that is due to name recognition.
And for Schatz, many voted for him just because he is a Punahou grad. Same thing with Obama. It never amazed me to hear how many Punahou grads voted for those two just because of that affiliation. Many of them had NO idea what his political views/leanings are. :(

become and get away with gun running in Hawaii.
Purely as a educational exercise as I don't violate
any Federal, state, or local laws.

Don't get upset with Marx just because you don't understand him. He was naive about human motivations, but his critiques of unchecked capitalism were spot-on.
Trump was the result of poor people finally standing up to the class warfare waged on them by the rich. Things haven't gotten bad enough in Hawaii since we are all basically welfare queens depended on the military and tourism. Since mostly only rich people here can afford to have a 'voice' the vote is totally leaning towards the bourgeois.
If you understood Marx (and not just using his name like some type of curse word) then you'd understand Hawaii better. This is what happens when crony capitalism nears it's endgame, when the management class hides in it's fortresses and believes it's own bullshit until the rage of the internal and external proletariat can no longer be ignored.

I believe that the reasons are plantations, The Big Five companies in HI and rise of unions as the offspring of the two. Plantations are mostly history and the Big Five (AMFAC, Alexander & Baldwin, Castle & Cook, C. Brewer and TH Davies) are now shadows of their past powers, but their legacy lives on in HI. The HI democrat party was built on racism and it still carries on today even though lots of dems are now from the mainland. As many older locals die off, I believe the younger locals are more independent without the history lessons from parents or they can see as they grow into the working world.
Most of HI locals are conservative but as a bad result of this conservatism is not wanting change. Prime example of this is Long's Drugs. There is no Long's Drugs, it's now CVS but the pushback from locals was they want to shop at a store named Long's not CVS. That should tell anyone the mentality here. But in this world, NOTHING lasts forever no matter what.

The Republican Party primarily represented the interests of the Big Five, who were predominately Caucasian and notoriously racist to all non-whites. It was the domination of the Big Five and their predecessors who overthrew of the Hawaiian Monarchy that were the primary reasons for the animosity of Caucasian Americans by Hawaiians and local Asians alike back then that lives on today.

I have been warning the wife that I am looking at property in northern Arizona. This place is going the way of California, and I bailed out of there almost eleven years ago.

That's a great point about Long's and CVS. Someone else pointed it out to me once here that the majority of people here have the herd mentality and I didn't want to believe it at the time but it's kind of true. What I also noticed is that people are generally slow to anger but when the rage takes over the consequences can last for decades. At some point Hawaii will have had enough. Lord help us when that day arrives.
