maui. so buyer would need to get the serial in advanced with model to get a permit in advance before the private sale/transfer correct?

Better to try and sell it yourself so you avoid shipping and auction fees. Post in the classifieds section here, check with local shooting groups. Be careful when meeting up with the buyer, some people get robbed trying to sell firearms. Preferable to do everything at the gun range or police station.
You could try consignments at the gun store who will charge a %. Use gun broker or off-island classifieds as a last resort due to the auction fees and shipping cost (next day airmail and possible FFL fees).

Yes if it's an on-island private party sale, MPD prefers you meet your buyer at the records dept so they can find their copy of the original registration. This can take 30 minutes or more, I've experienced the wait! They have you sign off on the form. Then they have the buyer sign and then they issue buyer a new reg paper. This is all after the buyer has been issued their permit to aquire, of course.
Thank you for your quick reply to my message. Aloha!

I'm very mixed about this topic. I've bought and sold stuff on here. I've met some awesome people.
The last few people I've tried to deal with wasted my time I'd rather go to GB and deal with the fees. I'm talking an 18+ Positive feedback member on here, who dropped a bunch of names from this club and that club, my word is good blah blah blah.... who said something was wrong with my brand new rifle (there clearly wasn't), made me drive down to have someone check it, only to confirm my suspicion, that the prospective buyer was a "loose screw behind the wheel." Hey buyer, rifle was deemed all good.....And then I get ah, oh I'm not interested anymore, but thanks.
This experience on 2a and having previously dealt with BMW club members confirms my suspicions..... There are really solid ones. And there are some that are complete asshats. While there are less asshats than good ones..... it's the asshats that make you sour and not want to meet up with the rest, contribute in events, support, etc.

When I recently sold a rifle, I met the buyer but made sure he sent me a copy of his Permit to Acquire first. I thought it was prudent since I didn't know the buyer.

Out of the trunk of your car, like most free people do.
Oops! this is Hawaii, sorry that is illegal here.
Here in Hawaii, freedom took a dump years ago,
and we are still covered with the stench.
If you have family in another state where free people live,
ship it to them as a gift and have them sell it on the local market.
