Title: Carrying a handgun while bow hunting pigs
Post by: vooduchikn on January 15, 2012, 09:26:49 PM
So I have a question. I am going on a Pig eradication hunt on private land early tomorrow morning (0500).  This is a bow hunt, and hunting with firearms are not allowed.  Some big boars have come of this property recently.  This will be heavily wooded and close range shots. The last thing I want is to get in close quarters with one of those bad boys and only have a broadhead or my fixed blade SOG as back up and it may be dark and I have nowhere to run.  I have seen some pretty nasty pics and heard some bad stories about hogs/hunter encounters.

Any know of any reason that I cannot OC my 10MM (allowed per DLNR rules) on private land as a back up gun as long as I only carry when on the property?

I already know what I am going to do, just wondering your thoughts.

If you hunting on private property do the state laws still count?

Looks like the landowner sets it.

Funny my friend just asked me this today.

You need to discuss this with the land owner. It's not an issue with the state unless you're on state land in a archery area only. If it's heavily wooded you shouldn't have a problem, get behind or up a tree. You'll never out run a pig.

Hence the max loaded 10mm

On private land you could carry state law lets you hunt with a handgun barrel has to be longer then 5" but on private land there is no bag limit, you can hunt what ever the land owner lets you hunt, I'm pretty sure 99.9% sure that you can use what ever gun you want. So if you just so happen to have an RPG, use it :) But state law doesn't really apply on private land. Of course you can't be shooting endangered species. ;)

Hahah, made it out. Shot a small boar from about 20 yards. Saw some big pigs, but they were outside bow range and behind a lot of cover.  Smoked 'em in my smoker...tasty.
