You probably know this already, the ranch comes in different models: .223 and 5.56
I think only the ranch models do this. The rest of the Ruger Americans are only .223

I have the regular American in .223, rim fire. 22LR, and predator .308
Great inexpensive bolt guns.
There's getting more and more aftermarket stocks and other parts for them coming out.
Although mine are stock out of the box. Only added optics.
I see people on the mainland shooting them pretty far.

You would want the 5.56 chamber. Both use the same diameter bullet. The 5.56 has a longer throat to the lands in the barrel and rated for higher pressure. Twist rate of the barrel will determine the bullet weight (more accurately the bullet length) that will be stabilized.
You want a fast twist to stabilize heavier (longer) projectiles. ie 80grain+ bullets would need a 1:7 twist barrel.
The longer throat in a 5.56 chamber will also enable longer bullet seating depth and maximize powder volume in the case for a reloader (within safe limits of course). However, that will probably require single loading, as the OAL will be longer than the magazine.

I've shot 62 grain green tips 600 yards with a 14.5" carbine. Not optimal, but doable.
I currently been using 69grain Sierra tipped match kings in my 18" AR.
These new TMKs have the same ballistic coefficient as the 77 grain regular SMKs. They can be pushed faster and easier to fit in the magazine.

the ranch is 16" barrel, predator is 22", regular American is 22" and is not threaded. ranch and predator are threaded barrels (considering barrel length and threading in the 5.56 and .223 calibers)
its a little confusing bc on Ruger website, ranch is only listed as 5.56, but what I see around online there are .223 models too, and I see on buds gunshop they have 223 and 556 for sale
so make sure you know what you're getting before buying/ordering. :shaka:

5.56 chamber would be more versatile as well. You can shoot either .223 or 5.56nato in it.
A .223 chamber will limit you to .223 only!

I'll look for those 69 grain ammo too since I'm too scared to use my reloading press for rifle calibers
Yeah those you tubers shoot far. I saw adudeandsomeguns shooting out to 1100 yards.
I'd be happy with just getting the chance to try shooting beyond 100 yards
