Its 2pm on a Wednesday, You open your e-mail and see you have a message from a friend who works with NASA. You read the e-mail and its a warning. "In 24 hours a CME (solar flare) larger then any seen before will hit earth.
A natural disaster like the world has never seen is about to happen you have an advanced warning.
WHAT DO YOU DO ? What are your immediate steps (not a 6 month plan but what do you do right now)
Keep your answer short and sweet and on topic. In 24 hours i will post the next part of the scenario. I want to turn this into a long running post where the scenario develops with the twist and turns of a what could happen to see how we react to the changing situations. some of it will go to pure fiction, some of it will go to realistic scenarios. I will add a new step into the scenario every day or two to keep it running. So remember dont get to in depth unless its needed as your plans could go out the window with the next step.
If you feel need need to quote PLEASE only quote the bold text (the question) so as posts dont go into whole pages.

Hmmm...
Call loved ones.
Fill water jugs.
Fill truck gas tank and spare gas tank.
Check to make sure propane cylinders are full. Top off if needed.
Visit Costco.
- Canned foods
hard liquor
batteries.
If they have any of those survival food kits, buy a truckload. Literally.
a few of those solar-recharge Net Zero "generators".
More propane cylinders
portable lights
large garbage cans for additional water storage
bleach
several large first aid kits
Wash dishes
Do laundry

what he said
plus buy cigarettes and lighters for barter
buy bandages and first aid supplies
buy ammo in common calibers

Fill all he water storage containers I have, over 100 gallons.
If the roads aren't too chaotic I would go to costco, otherwise the nearest super market and hardware store for supplies.
Supplies to include: Food, tarps, cooking supplies, plywood to board things up, rope, glue, general repair hardware, medical supplies.
Load all of my magazines
Fill up cars with gas and gas containers with extra.
Warn family members
-
Call friend to make sure it isn't a hoax or some BS
Call family and select friends
Leave work and pick up:
Fill up gas
Pick up canned food and other non-perishable items
Drop off my car and stuff I picked up at family member's house
Take family member's SUV and fill gas and gas cans and then head back to my place to pick up:
Canned and non-perishable food
Survival type gear, including first aid kits, clothes, select guns and ammo
Cooking supplies (propane tanks, charcoal, etc) and but more on way back to family member's house
-
First thing would be to close bank accounts and draw all the cash.
next prepare all supplies, food, first aid, weapons as stated above.
Store as much fuel, water, and propane as possible.
Probably stage gear at other families homes and help them prep.
-
Get a cargo bicycle or 5.
-
First action is notify: call my close network and assign them items to get; call head pastor to take care of church; tell close neighbors; post in 2AHI; call friend in VA to have her notify familly
2nd go to Costco buy canned goods, flour, salt, batteries, vitamins and supplements, aluminum foil, 2 extra auto batteries, duct tape, nuts, electrolytes. Go to City Mill after dropping Costco stuff off, get sheet metal and aluminum plates of any size, more water jugs/coolers, plastic sheeting rolls, spacer blankets if have.
At night go to Longs or Walgreens for OTC meds, electrolytes, supplements, butane containers, matches, lighters. If time go to Safeway buy more canned goods, flour. Fill truck with gas including my empty cans and get cash from ATM. Lucky that Costco, City Mill, Longs/Walgreens, Safeway FHB, 76 station all close together and near my home. Would max out whatever CC I have and save cash.
At home stay up all night to fill all containers with water; use aluminum/steel plates to cover my gensets, chainsaws, cover truck in garage with metal garage door with space blankets, foil; place SW radios, extra cell phone, laptop, 2 ways comms in metal tool box or cover with space blanket or foil.
Next day, if rest of my group arrives in the A.M., have them fill all their containers with water. Might be hard to convince all to leave their homes to BO but hope they listen.
Not any kind of expert at protecting electronics from EMP damage so not sure about how I cover things, but it's better than nothing. Also getting gas is a back priority since my truck and gensets might get fried.
-
Also stockpile dog food. Keep them healthy. Dogs will be important early warning when someone sets foot on your property to steal your goods.
-
Ok here we go,
After reading the e-mail a couple of times you look at the data and time sent, you realize that it was sent almost a day earlier. You have only 5 minutes untill the CME is going to hit earths atmosphere.
with 5 minutes notice of a pening natural disaster like the world has never seen before. Does your plan change ? What do you do ?

Get in my car and decide where to head to first. If 5 mins, I'd probably head to my dad's house. It's closer by and he will need help anyways. I figure I'll get as far as I can and then have to walk the rest of the way. I would call family and select friends on the way. There's a good amount of food and water and more all around survival type stuff at my dad's house. He also has a good amount of stuff like firearms and ammo, two cars that are usually almost full with gas, emergency generator, etc.
-
I'd buy stocks in whatever companies sell equipment and supplies to electric utilities. Fill up the bathtub and water bottles. Top off the gas tank in the car. Then stay indoors
-
5 minutes ?
Round up the wife and kids, make sure the safes are opened and then worry about water, water, and more water.
-
Things I already have....
Pantry of canned and packaged food, incl canned meats, evaporated milk, ...
Frozen chicken and hamburger can keep for a few days in ice chest with ice from ice maker hopper
Buckets with at least a month of survival food
9 cases of water bottles (45 x 16.9 Fl Oz)
Many Self Defense and Property Security options
Bug-out bag
Well-stocked First Aid supplies
2-3 months Rx meds
1 month Dog Food
2 x 20L cans of non-ethanol gasoline with long-term stabilizer added
Truck stays above 1/2 tank. Right now just under Full.
About $800 cash on hand
Plenty of batteries
Plenty of flashlights
Crank/solar/AC/DC rechargeable weather band/AM/FM emergency radio (no short wave) with LED flashlight/room light built-in
1/2 tank Propane for grill
Mine is the only 2-story structure on my street. Work with neighbors to organize manpower and supplies.
-
5 minutes?
Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Stay calm. Don't rush.
Panic kills more than anything else in most situations.
-
5 minutes, eh? Well, there's no point in trying to shop, all of their sales systems will be down before I reach a store. I'd start filling water containers, and while that was happening, make sure to shut down and unplug all electronics. Stick all portable electronics in the oven and close the door. Then crack the last cold beer I'm likely to have for a while!
-
Not sure if it's still relevant now, but gas stations need electricity to run the gas pumps and almost none of them had a backup generator. There was an incident in the past, think it was a hurricane, where the power was out for a long time and the emergency vehicles could only fuel up at one gas station in the area which had an emergency generator.
-
5 minutes?
Watering every container I can think of.
Unplug devices to prevent surges from damaging them (is that a thing for solar flares?)
Bring everyone inside
-
5 min left, do like Tom, after filling up every container with water; lock and load, crack a beer, sit on the front porch, and enjoy the chaos... >:D
It'll be a few days until the real problems begin.....
-
5 min. left, start filling containers till water stops in meantime making notifications till phones, web go out. Placing electronics in metal cases or just wrapping them in space blankets.

Congratulations, You just got married and had 2 kid, A boy 12 and a girl 17, Dont you feel lucky, Its 2pm on a Wednesday that means their at school and your wife's at work.
You call your wife but she dosent answer. Your kids cant take cell phones to school. your at work 5 miles from home your kids schools are on the way home but you wife works 5 miles in the other direction. (10 miles from home).
With the contents of your car what do you do ?

It'll be a few days until the real problems begin.....
5 mins after said event, strip naked and run around. HPD to busy to stop me =P
Told my wife the same thing if plane is about to crash. So when they find my body, they're gonna ask "where the hell did this guys clothes go?".
-
I stay put, because I'm at home filling water jugs, not at work. My wife is intelligent and capable, and she only works two miles from home. It's an easy walk that she's done often. My kids are the product of some sadist's imagination; it's clearly time I let them go. The contents of my car are fine just where they are.
I continue with my filling of water containers, protecting of electronics, and sipping of cold beer.

Won't a strong enough EMP disable vehicles as well? Most won't run if the computer chips get fried.

Beat me to it. Lots/most cars will be fine. A buddy texted me an article where they did EMP tests on cars and most were just fine. Maybe some stuff on the fritz, but would work.

Best advice from the article:
I did learn that a microwave oven can make an excellent Faraday cage, so that's where you want to jam
your laptop and iPhone if you think an EMP attack is coming.
Just remember to remove them prior to your celebratory false-alarm burrito.

I'm on one of the outer islands.
I'm set to survive, in fact it is the Oahu
politicians and people that support them
that are the biggest threat
to me. I have food, water, transportation
( if you like horses), medical et al, I really don't care
if Oahu Democrats get nuked, in fact
my life will become better if that
happened.
I don't need Democrats.
I don't need your police.
I don't need your unions.
I just want to be free, from the likes
of Hawaiian Democrats.
Flame on guys!

Text wife to buy food and water on the way home. Pick up the kids and make them help me carry all the liquor. Everyone will thank me later when we have some nonperishables to trade.

London808 this is a great idea!
Let's play...
On 2pm on Wednesday I am sitting at my office job in an air conditioned 7 story building in downtown. My life is about to change and civilization is about t be tested...
I get the NASA message, if I truly believe it was not a hoax and that electronic devices would be knocked out in catastrophic proportions, I would text my immediate family.
I finish work at 4:30pm, I would go to Home Depot and buy a bunch of stuff including fuel containers, water holders, ice chests, saws, tarps, BATTERIES, a generator, firewood, candles, flashlights other immediately useful items.
Stop by Chevron and Safeway to fill up gas and stock up on canned food, beans, rice, and ICE.
I get home unload everything.
Tomorrow morning I'll call in sick and be going to the bank to withdraw my money whilst leaving the minimum balance so as to not raise any red flags.
I would also buy anything else I would need, Costco to stock canned food and liquor, and Diamond Head Ice to get cheap 20 pound bags for like $4.
I have 7 chickens so I can feed them scraps for fresh eggs and breed them for more chickens.
I get to building a basic rocket stove with cinder blocks.
The rest of the night I would be enforcing my home, constructing wooden barriers to block entrance to my home, using my tools as much as possible to build things while we still have electricity.
At some point I would tend to my weapons and load magazines as needed, there aren't that many and realistically I don't think I would need my guns immediately.
It's 12pm the next day, I haven't slept all night but I'm finished building my last barrier. I take a shower and probably pass out for an hour before the flare hits.....
It's 2pm, the flare hits.....

As this game gets more challenging, another viable option is; when in danger when in doubt, run in circles scream and shout. :shake:

7pm start making rounds of stores buying more stuff for survival use that credit card
8pm stock up on gas buy extra gas cans and fill em up
9pm buy a gene and other useful tools with no electricity
10pm get stuff to build faraday cages
11pm medical supplies and drop stuff at home base
12pm hit bestbuy and stock up on batteries and other useful electronics
1am sleep
8am get up access the situation to see if panic has started

Most the people responding to this challenge have already lost.
I won't boast about my preparations other than to say the only thing I will
miss if the world shuts down is the INTERNET and beer, and I'll have beer
in a month or two( if can find that book)
You need to prepare way ahead of an event.
Events are going to happen. Just like death
and taxes.

I will see if I can find the video but there was one I saw where an EMP did shut down a vehicle. The more rugged electronics like a power window worked but the more complicated ones like the computerized systems didn't work after.

I don't particularly like your ideas.
but as my IP is mostly untraceable
I'll say this.
I used to certify my designs as being EMP
proof to the FAA. Don't get on an airplane if you
don't believe me.
If something is rated CE it is pretty safe.
make sure all your stuff has surge suppression
and don't ever
fall for the idea that cops are your friend.
They will just kill your dogs, shoot you, and get
paid vacation till the courts absolve them of
any crimes.
Aloha.

Due to the fact that we have some members that can't have a conversation about something without going to personal attacks and general shit talking ( basically ruining any hope of a meaningful thread) I have decided not to continue this or thread/ the game
