Hey folks,
What did you guys use to fill the rifle rest bags (Caldwell type)? I purchased cheap air soft bullets from eBay but it wasn't enough to fill the larger bag. I wanted to make it light as possible and not worry about it when it gets wet (just incase).
Sand is free, but heavy.
Rice will turn mushy if it gets wet.
Air soft bullets worked well. 10k/$12
Walnut/ tumbling media?
Anyone got walnut media they wanna get rid of?

I used sand for this:

OMG! Is that thing HEAVY!!
I'm thinking I need to use some cornhusk. I have a few of those cornhusk neck pillows I bought at the airport that might get dissected if I can't locate a source. >:D

Well, it looks like I'm buying extra kitty litter!

Thanks for all the quick reply's :shaka:
I got a hold of some walnut media. If that doesn't work out. I'll try some pillow foam beads...

I'm not a genius or anything but couldn't you stuff it with unused ripped in half trash bags below the bbs? If you stuff enough wouldn't it raise the bbs up to give you good support? All you needed was to fill her up, right?
I've used with sand inside but never owned one.

Front rest filled with sand, rear rest which is a med pouch, filled with towels. Would have used cat litter if I didn't have the sand to make a clearing bucket.

I like the look of that, but it'll take about 22.69 lbs of the rubber beads to fill the PRO Bulls Bag. I did the math, and 50 lbs of dry sand comes out the about 59 x 8oz cups by volume.
The seller you pointed to lists the 22 lb box (free large flat rate shipping box) for $50.
For comparison, 35 lbs of kitty litter is about $13. So, you save 13 lbs of weight for about $37 more.
Of course, they make smaller bags. I wanted one that was AR platform friendly.
When you add the weight of all your shooting gear you have to carry, it's probably worth the cost.

Hmmmm don't use bag... I rest it on the old lady's shoulder... she can't hear too good but she's steady as a rock.....nah nah I use kitty litter..... :shake:

Japanese style, use rice.
-
If wet, then rice molds and kitty litter turns to clay mush so don't get wet. Crushed walnut from Petco is an option plus can be used for case tumbling. Free shipping if over $49.

So, after seeing the eBay ad for rubber beads, on Saturday I ordered the 22lb bag for $50, which included USPS Priority flat rate shipping.
Order arrived yesterday. I weighed the bag with sand before emptying it.
BEFORE: 37.9 lbs
The sand was dry as it poured out, so no moisture adding to the weight. Filled and weighed the bag with the new beads:
AFTER: 21.7 lbs.
16.2 lbs lighter, which is almost 43% lighter.
That means I can carry much more ammo now!! :D
It's a one-time cost, the rubber is not a problem with moisture, and if your bag is smaller, you don't need the 22 lb size. I had maybe 1/4 to 1/2 lb left over. So if there is any settling or compression, I can add more later.

I believe they sell these items at Walmart.

I filled mine about 20years ago... pretty sure I used rice. They've gotten wet once or twice, but I haven't observed any consequences from that. If I were to do it over, I'd go for something even lighter. AIrsoft ammo or beanbag chair stuffing have always seemed like good ideas. I do have to say, though, I'm stunned at the face the rice has lasted this long! Plus, it gives me an emergency food source that will keep me from starving at least one week longer.
