Title: Getting pistol sights installed
Post by: Sodie on April 09, 2017, 02:00:23 PM
I'll be getting replacement sights for my P320 one of these days...  What economical options do I have on Oahu to get them installed/zeroed?

Thanks in advance...   :shaka:

Usually the store that sells them will install it for you.  I got mine at security equipment.  I went to the range and fired the gun.  Took it back to the store and told them it shot 4 inches to the left, and they adjusted it a second time.

If you don't mind marking up the sight, you could put the slide in a vice and drift the sight with a punch and hammer.

I used a micrometer to set I pretty even on the slide and then brought my sight pusher to the range and adjusted it after putting a few 5 round groups.

If the current sights are zeroed, mark the center of each sight on the slide (piece of tape on the slide next to the sight, then a sharpie mark on the tape in the exact middle of the sight).

Then when installing the new sights, just center the dots where you marked the old sights.  That should get it exactly where the other sights were sighted in.

I bought this sight pusher on amazon. It's got pretty good reviews, and it worked well for me.

Universal Handgun Sight Pusher Tool for 1911 Sig springfield and others* Best tool on the market for front or rear sights* MADE IN USA https://www.amazon.com/dp/B016R4DXJW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_MZX6ybA497MEJ

I did it myself since none of the shops locally had the sights I needed. Which is a set from Dawson precision specifically made for the sig dark elite. Which has proprietary dovetail that is deeper then any other sig p series, so to avoid any mix ups and just ordered it directly from Dawson.

That's cheap.  The other tools I've looked at cost $100+

Good point.  I was going to get them straight from Dawson, but I'll check around town and see if I can get them locally.

I'd like to cheap out and put them in myself (I've looked at the sight pusher jks mentioned), but I've got a pretty solid track record of f-ing up stuff like this the first time I try...

Thanks for all the answers, you've given me some options (and tips) I hadn't considered.   :shaka:

I have a Glock sight pusher.  Otherwise, I just use a vice and punch method.  There are numerous different material type punches available if you are worried about marring the finish of the sight.  That and blue tape.

Personally, I like to be able to fine tune the sight at the range.  All you need is a small mallet and a punch.  Dawson sights typically come with a punch, or at least the ones that I bought. Yeah, sometimes it's tough to notice or control just how much the sight moved with the mallet and punch method.  Hell, even with the Glock sight pusher I have a tough time noticing how much the sight moved, even with pencil marks.  I end up just a few (or more) round of drift and shoot.  I'm not trying to get ultra precise for handguns, but I just like that I have the ability to drift the sights on my own.

If you want a Dawson punch, I know I have at least one extra that I can give you.  I believe they are aluminum.

As for the vice, it helps, but I think you could get away without it.  I also use the vice to hold the sights in the cases where I need to use a file to fit the sights.
