On Thursday, the US military dropped a GBU-43 Massive Ordnance Air Burst (MOAB) bomb (aka, the "Mother Of All Bombs") on an ISIS base in Afghanistan. It's the first time the massive weapon has been used on the battlefield. The strike was reportedly aimed at destroying tunnels used by ISIS operatives.
What Is It?
The 21,600-pound MOAB is the US's most powerful weapon short of a nuclear device (here's a good rundown on the bomb's internals). The bomb is an "air burst" weapon, which means it explodes before it hits the ground to maximize the blast radius:
The idea behind an "air burst" weapon, as opposed to a weapon that explodes on impact with the ground, is to increase its destructive range. A bomb that penetrates the ground and then bursts tends to send all of its energy either down into the ground or straight up into the air. An air burst weapon sends a great deal of its energy out to the side.

Was listening to KSSK this morning (my dad listens to it in the morning, so. . . ) and they covered this story. Perry starts adding his 0.02 as he usually does ( where's the rolleyes emoticon? ) and he says something like "well, it's a 21,000 lb bomb, so the 21 kiloton bomb has got to be massive". . . He continues to talk out of his arse and all I can do is sigh and roll my eyes. . .

That's what I was thinking for the Tomahawk strike on the Syrian airbase the other day. Like I recall Clinton doing same or more. Obama as well.
I thought the coverage of this one wasn't too bad. But maybe that was relative to the coverage of the Syrian strike.

In edition to the 11 tons of explosives, the shockwaves would be devastating for those in the vicinity. I would imagine any nearby terrorists in tunnels had a bad day.

I didn't hear Perry's views on MOAB. He usually has views that I agree with so I would give him a pass on his 21 KT equivalent. I remember he was a Navy officer stationed at Pearl before being a Honolulu DJ. Wikipedia says he was a submariner. Not sure if he was nuke or on a diesel sub which the last at Pearl was the USS Barbel. Regardless I thank his service.
My opinion is that Perry is the only person in HI that could unseat Hanabusa, Schatz and Mazie if he decided to go into politics which I doubt. He has the name recognition and a background way superior to these 3 clowns.

He middle of the road to conservative, he still has a lot of common sense, I'd vote for him. MUCH BETTER than the far left wackkos that infest the state and city capitols now.

Interesting that they used this instead of one of the ground penetrating bunker buster type of bombs. Granted the shockwave is massive and might cause concussive injuries but I wonder how well it does to actually collapse tunnels

I know they said ~36 ISIS were killed but I wonder how they can really get a accurate assessment in one day considering the tunnels in that area must be destroyed of partially destroyed/collapsed, so how would they know what remains in those areas. I doubt they just sent our guys in a hostile area as tunnel rats and used heavy equipment to sort through the rubble in other areas. Or maybe this is just a count of the real obvious casualties and that number will be revised as they can thoroughly sort through everything.

I'd be interested in seeing just how intricate their tunnel system is/was. The tunnels in Vietnam were really amazing and included everything needed for large size military operations, such as make shift hospitals, chow provisions, armories, ammo and weapon supplies, sleeping quarters, etc, etc.

Good points. Effectiveness might also depend on soil conditions which would make tunnels more or less durable.but I guess the money was already spent so not using it doesn't save any money. And we have a better idea of what it can do.

The largest blast I've done was about 2,000lbs of explosives which was very impressive. The EOD guys said they did 7,000lbs once and said the base about 7 miles away thought a vehicle bomb went off at the gate. I can't imagine what 18,000 pounds is like.

Maybe Putin should drop the next one on them since he wants to eradicate ISIS and terrorists, as Trump does. I think the two of them certainly share that common interest.

The word/speculation is that the bunker busters would have been more effective for the caves, but the MOAB was the "right" combination of explosive effect to damage the caves and people as well as psychological effect of the big blast. Those who weren't caught in the blast took notice for sure.

Clearly the use of this bomb had nothing to do with ISIS and everything to do with NK,
Its a demonstration to NK that we dont need to use nukes to make big booms, The timing on it is perfect. Its also a demonstration to the rest of the world (Russian and China) that US has other options then going nuclear with NK.
