Title: Magnetospeed sporter
Post by: tim808 on July 03, 2017, 12:12:14 AM
For those using the sporter - any issues using it with bull/heavy/varmint barrels?  My understanding is that heavy barrels are < 1.00 " diameter near the muzzle

(I only shoot 223, my friend has a 308

I have no muzzle brake, my friend has a clamp on muzzle break.   A video showed it can work on a rifle with a brake...but that may not always be the case.)

Tnx

I have only had mine since December. So I don't have a lot of experience with it. However, I have used it on two rifles with a bull barrel and not have had any issues. The only issue I have ever had was it not being properly positioned forward/back. If you don't get the muzzle end near center of the curved portion then it won't work and you need to change the sensitivity. Also, the magnetospeed comes with another thickness of rubber pad. So you should probably use the thinner pad with the bull barrel. And again, changing sensitivity might help what ever issue you are having.

The problem with trying to answer your question is you don't really explain what the problem/issue is that you are having. So I can only give you a generic answer. Maybe if you post back all of the specifics of your problem I can give you a more definitive answer.

Hi Dave
Sorry, my bad.  I failed to mention we are thinking of picking up a sporter and that we are looking to pick up rifles with heavy barrels.

I've read that people like the sporter but many still upgrade to the v3.....so recommendation is to get the v3

I'm wondering if there were times when the sporter couldn't read the velocity due to the diameter of the barrel or due to the muzzle device.

We are just starting and I'm thinking the sporter is a decent entry chronograph.  We can later sell it if we upgrade to the v3

Tnx tim

Hi Tim,

Before you decide on the V3 I would go back and look at the differences between the two models. My memory is not as sharp as it used to be. But my recollection of the differences between the two models is only the software and the little display unit that it comes with. It offers more features but is basically the same chronograph. Also, there are a few more little rubber pads of varying thicknesses offering more and better mounting choices. In other words, I don't think there is anything between the two models that would help with use with bull barrels. My experience with the sporter model has been mixed. Here is the problem that I found. You must center the end of the muzzle in the center of the curved area of the wand. The problem is a lot if not most of the muzzle devices interfere with mounting the wand far enough forward or far enough back. That is the real problem I have had. So as I try and mount the wand as far forward or as far back as I can to get the end of the muzzle as close to center as I can, if it is too far away from center it won't work. If you cannot get it quite centered, you can increase the sensitivity through the software and display unit. This works most of the time, otherwise it doesn't work. And so the muzzle device will have to be removed in order to mount the wand properly. And on some rifles, the hand guard or stock comes so far forward it is impossible to mount the wand properly at all. So the real problems I have found are physical and have nothing to do with the two different versions as I believe the wand is the same between the two models. The sporter comes with two thicknesses of rubber pads for mounting on different diameter barrels. So far using the thinner pad on large diameter barrels has worked fine for me. I don't remember if I had to increase the sensitivity or not to make it work though. Also, most muzzle devices have a blank area where gasses are not expelled. For instance the muzzle device on my AR 300 BLK does not direct gasses downward but rather to the sides. So I make sure the wand is mounted under the muzzle device to protect it.

My feeling between the two models was that it was not worth the price difference between the two models to make it worth the extra money. I think the price difference was something near twice as much. For me the only other feature would have been connecting to a phone or computer to record and save all the info. I use a pencil and paper. Not so much high tech. But hard (pake) habits are tough to break. Otherwise I like the sporter model and recommend it if you can mount it to the rifle you want to test. Or if it is no problem to remove the muzzle device. Let us know what you decide to do.

Regards,
Dave

Hi dave
Thanks for all the info!!  I'll go with your recommendation - I don't need the bells/whistles of the v3
