Title: Funny observation about the show...
Post by: TastesLikeMetal on February 21, 2012, 09:13:16 PM
I notice a LOT of the preppers store their food in glass jars in open face shelves.  Considering the some of the people doing this are the ones anticipating Earthquakes wouldn't it make sense to secure those jars, kinda like on a boat.  All the prep they do is gonna end up on the floor mixed with broken glass with 1 big Earthquake.

yes! and of course he says everyone in america should own guns then proceeds to shoot himself. his excuse was "it was one of those things where my thumb was in front the barrel and it went off". what a dummy. then the experts say "in order to defend your family you will need to learn how to operate weapons" lol!

Was watching last night.  I found it funny that the lady in question is going on how cocoa has gone up 300% in the past year and the show's producers put a line on the bottom of the frame that says actually the price has gone down 30%. :D

Not that I don't think these guys have good ideas, but the extremes to which they go IMHO is crazy.

I thought he shot off his thumb with a pistol. Anyways, big prepper he was, he didn't even have a gsw kit, and neither of his sons were prepared to give aid. Good thing natgeo had a medic onsite, atleast someone was prepared.

Maybe in terms of canning glass jars are easier to pressurize and you wouldn't need to label everything, although you probably should.

That is a real good point,,, earthquakes, as a kid growing up on the big island we had a real big one when I was about 8 or 9 so maybe about 40 years ago,, mean action, everything left the shelves, everywhere, went into a store when trying to get home and just remember EVERYTHING being in the middle of the rows in sure save supermarket in Kamuela,,,  got home and nothing was left unbroken if it was glass or in glass, it was smashed,,,  an explosion would do the same thing, if it was big enough,, if you have glass jars of stuff and are canning your own I would suggest single row shelves with keepers like a board so nothing can come off the shelf, better yet, I keep everything on the floor in boxes or plastic bins, and only put lighter stuff up, its amazing how strong Mother Nature is. :shaka: :o

The cruel irony of a guy being featured in a documentary program about preppers being unprepared for about the most basic injury possible is just killing me!

Some feel that there is leaching from plastics into your food.  I would think that's a big reason why some go with glass.  Why they wouldn't have something to prevent the jars from falling off the shelves, well I dunno.

They put it in glass jars because of the heat involved. There are special jars, regular glass jars would crack in the pressure cooker.

One thing I noticed is all of these people are rich. What about the "common people".
