Ten days ago I had to go to Pali Momi ER for extreme pain in the left kidney area. X-ray, CT scan and wee wee test showed a stone, 4-5mm in the left kidney. Hell I felt like I was giving birth to a brontosaurus! They gave me a couple of Percocet but hardly helped. Wife started massaging the area and after a minute or so, pain disappeared. The doc said it passed the kidney and should be pee'd out in a week or two. Went to my GP on the 11th and told her nothing passed yet but I feel good. She ordered X-rays today and told me that the boulder is in the ureter. Asked if I want to keep drinking more water than Shamu, keep taking flomax till it passes or go to urologist. Dang! I had one 20 years ago and it took about two weeks to pass. Been reading a 4-5mm chunk might take up to 3-4 weeks. I really don't want lithotripsy but it might have to do it, laser or surgery. Hopefully it will pass on it's own. Upside is if it don't I'll get some fun drugs 😬 And visit Lala land ......
-
Hope all goes well. I've had a few small ones and even those were something I never want to experience again.
-
Man that SUCKS! Pray you do well.
-
Well, what a coincidence!
Guess where I spent the whole weekend....Queens Hospital having a kidney stone surgery.
At least I got to watch Sunday Night Football from a comfortable bed

Get better. Here's an article from the failed NYtimes.

MrGaf and OldFart - I hope for a speedy recovery for both of you. I too have had kidney stones. First time it happened I thought I was going to die. Never felt pain like that before. Best wishes to both of you!!!
One question I have for both of of you. I know this is going to sound weird, but.....
Did you eat any kind of dairy and citrus either together or on the same day? Within a few days of getting the kidney stone?
I know this sounds stupid, but after having my first kidney stone I came back to work and my boss asked me if I had eaten dairy and citrus together. I am sure it was just coincidence but I had eaten a bowl of ice cream and drank a glass of juice within an hour or two of each other shortly before having the kidney stone.
Just curious....
-
Yes.
A few hours before the pain started I had a bowl of ice cream. I also had some fresh strawberries and peaches earlier that day.
Very interesting coincidence.
-
Damn. That sucks! Sorry to hear you guys suffering through that.
I had a shooting buddy go through that. We were shooting a pistol match one day and he started pissing blood! Good thing there were a few EMTs at the range. He ended up passing the stone a day or so later. He said the thing was like a grain of sand, but felt like he was giving birth to a bowling ball. :o

Thanksgiving 1994....it triggered gallstones.
Pain so bad I thought I was going to die.
They cut it out the old fashioned way which really hurt.
Later on I found out that I actually could have died.

You let them cut your manhood out. Ouch
I hope you have a speedy recovery

Thanks for the well wishes!
"OF" hope you're feeling better.
Still waiting to hear from my GP. Think I'm gonna wait and see if it passes. Only thing that concerns me is it's size, 4-5cm. ER doc told me if it was any larger they would have had to take it. Don't really like my options though if it gets stuck.
Oh well, rotor rooter here I come! :shake:  :shaka:

Yup....bowl of cereal, cup of joe with milk and some iced tea with lemon, not to mention some Diet Coke. Don't help that I'm type-II diabetic as well! :worship: >:( >:(

So basically they did nothing yet. :shake:
In my case the stone cut the urethra which caused an infection.
So the urologist inserted a stent to open up the tube and let everything pass.
I asked him, "so does it just stay there?"
He says "No I'll take it out"
I said, "How?"
He says "By pulling the string"
Wwhhaaaatt? String???
He says, "you didn't see the string sticking out down there?"
-
hope you guys get better soon. :shaka:

Wow - misery loves company. I had a 6mm stone removed yesterday. It was stuck in the ureter and they went in with a laser to break it up and left a stent in. Funny thing - no string hanging out and I'm getting worried where it went and what they're going to have to do to get it out now.
A few hours after getting home, I started getting horrible abdominal pain and threw up for hours. Eventually had an ambulance ride to the ER last night. Doc said it was a bad reaction to the anesthesia (which has never happened before after other surgeries). Fluids and anti-nausea medicine helped and I came home this morning. What an ordeal.
Prayers to mrgaf and oldfart. I feel your pain - literally.

what's going on here? some kind of epidemic?
I too had the stomach pain and nausea and the ambulance ride.
-
I think I had one last year from not drinking enough water during a couple of months of work. It must not have been very big cause I never bothered to get drugs but man it was a unique painful type of pain.
-
I only wish the best for the three of you. I am sorry you guys all went through all of that. I really wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy.
-
Just curious. How many of you have gout.

Just tired of pissing thru a strainer! Would be more fun if the strainer was like a target! :geekdanc:

I feel for you. I've been through the process 3 times. The string for the stent usually hangs in the bladder. The Stent is removed by inserting a scope through your urethra. A hook is then manipulated by the eurologist to grab the string while the doctor peers through the scope to locate it. The Stent and scope are removed at the same time in one continuous motion. It is not an experience you want to repeat and is as memorable as having your prostate examined for the first time by a large Polynesian doctor with large fingers.
There are essentially 4 types of stones. I can only remember 2 of them: uric acid and calcium oxalate. The latter can be caused by having excessive calcium in the blood or by failing to hydrate the body sufficiently. Dark yellow pee is a common symptom that you are not hydrating sufficiently. Your doctor should be able to tell you what kind of stone you have and recommend a course of action to prevent a reoccurrence of the condition.
I hope things go smoothly for you and you recover quickly.

I hope both of you are feeling better soon. My dad suffered thru 2 kidney stone episodes. I have heard that this ailment can be inherited by the next generation. I have also heard that one of the worst things to ingest in regards to kidney stones is having frequent ice cream sodas.

oh oh ...no ice cream?
that's really bad news
-
Hi OF
I hope you are doing better. As mentioned earlier, I think the combination of calcium in the ice cream and the acid in the soda combine to create a deadly combo. Maybe someone with dietician expertise can shed some light on this painful subject.

That's what inspector said previously.
It makes sense to me because acid is used to clump up milk when making cheese.

My urologist told me lemonade keeps stones from forming, and there's no real consensus as to why it works over other citric fruit juices. It just does.
Costco sells a good ready-to-drink organic lemonade. Much better than any mix. I keep it in the fridge and have a glass or six every couple of weeks,
-
Juices and Specific Effects. Other beverages have various positive or negative effects, depending on the type of stone:
Lemon Juice: Drinking one-half cup of pure lemon juice (enough to make eight glasses of lemonade) every day raises citrate levels in the urine, which might protect against calcium stones. (While orange juice also increases citrate levels, it does not lower calcium and it raises oxalate levels. Therefore, it is not recommended.)
Cranberry and Apple Juice: Apple and cranberry juice contain oxalates, and both have been associated with a higher risk for calcium oxalate stones. Cranberry juice has properties that may increase the risk for both calcium oxalate and uric acid stones. On the other hand, cranberry juice helps prevent urinary tract infections and so may be helpful for reducing the risk for struvite and brushite stones. (These stones are far less common, however.)
Grapefruit Juice: A number of studies have found a risk for stones from drinking grapefruit juice.
Other Beverages and Their Effects on Stone Formation.
Soft Drinks. Patients with stones should avoid cola drinks with phosphoric acid, because they can severely reduce citrate levels in the urine. Drinks containing citrate seem to be okay,
Alcohol. Wine may protect against kidney stones. However, it is important to remember that beer and other alcoholic beverages also contain purines, which may increase the risk for the less common uric acid stones in susceptible people. Binge drinking increases uric acid and the risk for stones.
Coffee and Tea. Some research has reported a lower risk for stones in people who drink tea and both regular and decaffeinated coffee.

The stones are crystalline structures that tend to form over a prolonged period of time...sort of like a snowball that gets bigger as it rolls downhill. The just don't appear simply because you ate someting. The stones form in the kidneys and must make a jump up to enter the ureter. That's the tiny tube that connects the kidney to the bladder. This can happen by itself or with a little help with gravity such as when one lies on his side, rides a roller coaster or tumbles in the water while surfing (I had a stone lodge in my ureter while surfing one afternoon). Most people pass stones without noticing it. When the stone gets too big, it cannot pass through the ureter without help and must be removed by surgery. Kidney stones can cause minor bleeding in the kidney because it is abrasive. That's why a tall-tell sign of a stone is orange-pinkish urine. A large stone passing through the ureter can be extremely painful and can lodge itself in the ureter, blocking the flow or urine. When that happens, the urologist must retrieve the stone by either removing it with surgical instrument that enter the body through the urethra or shatter the stone into small pieces with sound shockwaves. A stent is usually placed in the ureter to keep it open and to allow the pieces of the stone to pass through the ureter and into the bladder where it can be eliminated through urination.

Looks like I might have to have the procedure done. Still haven't passed the rock of Gibraltar. Last X-ray a week who showed it's still in the ureter. Got a Urology appointment on the 2nd of October. Maybe easier to get a hooker and have her suck it out (always the squid, always) at least this way I can enjoy it. :shake:  :geekdanc:

...
I do not have gout.
In my case, during the week prior to my stone, we were really busy at work and I hardly had time to take any food, water and bathroom breaks. I was dehydrated for sure.
-
Note that the stent was the cause of the pain and discomfort during the past week.
It would hurt to sit and stand.
As soon as it came out the pains went away.

Well got the bad news... stone is stuck and I'm getting the roto rooter treatment on the 11th. Just hope the string thing won't be as bad as it think it will be. With my luck it'll get pulled some how and my head will light up! :shake:  :'(

Nope. It's in the ureter. Ultra sound is usually done if it's in the kidney.... >:(

Well got the treatment today.... was great till I woke up! Feels like someone punched me in the bladder area and taken no a leak is a whole new life experience! All in all the stone was about 8mm and was pretty close to blocking the plumbing. It was still way up the piss pipe. Got me a stint (doc said he had to open up the ureter a little more than usual) and it comes out Monday. Percocet will be my friend. Got a question for those who have had thier stones removed. Did you still strain after the procedure or is there something up there that will catch the "moraine pile"? Chilling out now waiting for the other boot to drop :shake: hahahaha :geekdanc:

You shouldn't experience any strain when you pee. Your flow should be normal once the initial burning pain subsides. The worst part of the procedure is the first pee after the procedure. You will pee fruit punch and hurt like the dickens (pun intended) as if the urethra in your pee pee has a thousand paper cuts. That should last for a day. Your doctor will tell you to pee into a strainer for a while to catch the pieces that you expel. The Doc will then send it to the lab to analyze the type of stone you have passed. Your Doc should be able to tell you what's going on in your kidneys and what you must do to minimize the chances of it happening again. You may feel a little to a lot of discomfort while walking/moving with the stent because the stent protrudes into your bladder and tends to poke it. You may also experience mild to moderate pain at the end of your pee cycle. This is caused by contractions of the bladder that sends the remaining urine back up the stent and into your kidneys. It sucks to have stones.
-
damn, 8mm... now i'm thinking about my bro's 7mm-08, and your kidney stone width is bigger. lol

Thanks for the info! Well I've noticed if I walk around too much there's cramping pain. Goes away when I sit or lay down. The strings attached to the stint seem to be irritating and while there is a lot less blood, there is still some present. Seems the more the strings irritate the more there is but its getting better. Stinging is when I start but subsides once the flow starts. Oh well just gotta take it easy! Can't wait till Monday, that's when it all comes out..... :geekdanc:

I mixed cranberry, lemon juice and about half cup of olive oil. Drank it twice a day to pass a 5mm stone in a week. Tastes bad but worked out great.

Well stent was removed this morning, a real unique experience. Doc told me I might have some bladder and ureter spasims as well as pain across the small of the back. DANG less than two hours later I felt like I was giving birth to a pilot whale! Doc said to drink lots of water and take some Percocet. Well I drank a lot of water and took two percs and within 10 minutes pain was gone! Sure will be glad when this is over!
