So I have been there before. As in once, like 9 years ago when I was 12. I bought my first gun not to long ago, can pick it up thursday and my freind who has owned before wants to go out there as well with me. Just want to know a few things.
1. Slugs are allowed on the rifle range? Yes or No?
2. I need to bring my own frame for the rifle range? Yes or No? Now I remember the pistol range has all sorts of little targets (steel plates) but do I need anything or can I just screw around and shoot them. Now on the rifle side I remember people having frames but we were shooting at the stuff way up on the hill like 225yds or whatever the distance is.
Thanks alot.
-
yes you can shoot slugs at the rifle range. The Silhouette range is the range with all of the steel targets, it's only open sat/sun. There is the bullseye pistol range which is open Wed-Sun, bring your own target stand for that one and no steel targets. You should bring a target frame for the rifle range unless you intend to shoot out to 200yrds where there are a few steel targets.
Have fun
-
If you need to make your own frame go to www.khsc.info (http://www.khsc.info) for the dimensions. On the ad wall there is also a guy who builds them and sells the frames cheap.
You are also welcome to go to the wood junkpile and make your own. Just that you gotta take it home! I have done this twice this year. Just need staple gun.
If you plan to shoot slugs use the stuff from the junk pile and use a big piece of cardboard. I use 24' x 48" and put pie plates on them. Couple of times the boys
missed the plates and tore up the frame!
-
Make sure that you have your gun cased or boxed when you bring it up to the range or they will yell at you.
Uncase/unbox your gun only on the firing line or they will yell at you.
Slugs makes me assume that you are getting a shotgun. Do not try to shoot it at the pistol or Silhouette range. They will yell at you.
Ask for info or help from the range officers in the traffic vests. Ask questions and read the safety rules.
-
... or they will yell at you.
... they will yell at you.
...They will yell at you.
I have been yelled at once on the rifle range. I wonder if anyone else here has been yelled at?
-
Once on the pistol side when the RO did not like the angle the muzzle was elevated to. He pointed out the holes in the overhead metal.
Point taken without offense.
-
I've gotten scolded, not yelled at. I did something wrong, so I just nodded my head and it was all g. Coffee on the ground and was about to blow over and I stepped about 30" over the line to try and save it. Another time I cracked open my rifle case about 2" to see if the mags were in there. Rules are rules.
Oh, if you go to the silhouette range, can you be cool and help set up the targets during the cease fire? I hate that 5 people go out and 20 people watch. :shaka:
-
Lol yeah I know no shotguns at the rifle range, thats more along the lines of common sense. So all the little steel targets are the far right (pistol side) If I remember right are only open on the weekend? Ok i'll check out the koko head site and figure out the frame sizes, im sure I got some spare wood around here. So I guess I more or less show up and just follow everyones lead when it comes to setting up the target and what not. Do I just bring the frame up with me and wait for a cease fire and take it out or do I need to be like 'Yo range officer i got this and is it cool to set it up!?" Now I can only have a total of 3 shots in my gun....really? two in the magazine one the chamber....yeah ok.. I just dont want to make a fool of myself...im sure everyone has at some point though...I have common sense so I know eyes&ears and keeping the barrel in a safe direction etc. As far as the pistol range goes, is the located near the skeet range?
Thanks all!
-
you can shoot shotgun at the rifle range. I'd shoot slugs at your target, the closest target stands are at 50yrds so if you shoot buck or bird, you'll probably hit other people's targets. Ask the range master first, but you usually can shoot your bird/buck shotgun into the berm on the left hand side of the rifle range.
Ask questions, listen to others, keep your muzzle pointing downrange at all times, even when un-casing your rifle.
-
Do I just bring the frame up with me and wait for a cease fire and take it out or do I need to be like "Yo range officer i got this and is it cool to set it up!?"
You have to run out, DUCK and set up while under live fire.....JUST KIDDING!
Cease fire every 30 Minute intervals. If I just missed the target setup I take out my 22 and shoot at all the shotgun shells on the ground.....or the Halekoa seed pods.
-
haha yeah that would be fun running out.. so does it need to be exactly 2x2 wood I have something a little under and I figure as long as the dimensions are good and it fits good in the stand then I am good to go right?
-
Holders are metal pipe stuck in the ground. Too large and the legs won't go in. When you make your frame you should probably cut two small wedges to tighten up the legs in the pipes.
-
Yeah I would add/remove material inorder to get it to fit correct but the rest can just be whatever?
-
so does it need to be exactly 2x2 wood
You can use 2x2 wood, but you will need to round the corners. A router with a 1/2" corner round bit works great, otherwise you will get a good workout filing down the corners.
but the rest can just be whatever?
Yes, but I would recommend following the dimensions provided on Koko Head Shooting Range's website.
-
I'm hoping to get out there this weekend and it will be my first time at the range as well. Do you think I will have any problems since my AKs bolt doesn't lock to the rear? Should I get a chamber flag to be safe or can I just stick a piece of hard plastic in there and call it good enough?
-
a chamber flag would work or you could use a fired shell casing, i usually jus pick one up from the ground
-
i usually jus pick one up from the ground
i do this too... after i get scolded from the ro's.. lol they're nice about it though.
-
I just bought this for my favorite AK's...

So I threw one together real quick (rifle frame) well not real quick...could not find the correct bit size and a few other mishaps..so its like
______
|
|
______=bottom
|=the 12" legs. now the legs are not inline with the frame like say the frame is | this the legs are in the back so from the side it looks like ____
| and the part where it goes up is about an inch in from there the leg starts going down...ok. basically I screw the legs ontop of the frame..so there in line with the frame its self to meet the 12"1/2 inner di but there staggerd so there no below the frame but sit out in front of it..lol yeahh this makes no sense.

FML what are you saying here?
-
^^ LOL I second the above.
-
lol yeah that was pretty bad.
sits on top of the frame....I'll just post a picture tmrow. but it meets all the dimensions so it should be fine. Looking sideways the frame is the solid line and the 12'' legs are the non solid. ________------ So the legs are not inline with the frame I screwed the 12'' peice into the frame but it the sits on top..thats really the only way to do it unless you have like 14" screws!
-
The right way to do it is if you take a 12" piece and line it up with two 2x2x10" pieces not in a perpendicular way but so they kind of line up if you look at it from the side with two screws but just one washer per side as long as the wood isn't too soft on top of it when you screw it in so you can get a good fastener with all the pieces of wood when it gets put together. So all that's needed is a piece of cardboard where the wood meets near the top of it when its standing or laying down for that matter just as long as it's kind of straight where it sits on top of the metal pieces. Don't worry if the angle isn't right as long as the wood is soft enough to screw a screw into but not too soft where it meets near the bottom. And if its too soft just pick up another piece of wood to brace it near the middle of the two side pieces but below the top piece and above the bottom piece when you put it on.
-
Yeah I would add/remove material inorder to get it to fit correct but the rest can just be whatever?
remove a tad
you can also just buy a frame at Young Guns or Windward Gun Shop.
-
Thanks for the help but I still screwd it up somehow..I called up young guns, little more then I want to pay but I am going to pick one up tmrow and I guess I can go off that for when I build one.

Heading to the range today.
For the pistol range, can I use my rifle frame? or do I need another frame for pistol shooting.

Just go Home Depot and make one, not that hard. If you think about it, all you need is the side posts and cardboard. Put the posts in the stand and staple the cardboard on the wood. It holds, I do it all the time. It also makes transportation easier.

Thanks for the information, but I ended up getting one from Security Equipment for $16. First time shooting my pistol at the range in three years, and I put more rounds in the frame then the actual target ;D. It would be a cheaper choice just to build my own frame and work on my trigger pull. Sort of hard not to jerk the trigger when you got that trigger safety in your way.
Koko head shooting range was run very professionally and the staff was real friendly and helpful. Will definitely be there next month :shaka:
-
duct tape to repair those errant shots, my frame is almost made of duct tape, lol, stronger than wood ;)

In your frame or your neighbors? Haha jk.

Duct tape is awesome. Did you see the Mythbusters episode on duct tape?

I agree! My first time going, and the wife came with. One staff member was a little grumpy because I signed the wait list before signing the log book. No big deal. Found out the ol 22 needs to be sighted in, my new frame is heavily modified now. The AR did awesome. (new build)
-
I was hitting my frame lol. Once i took my cardboard off my frame fell apart, so i just put it in the scrap pile. Now that i have seen the range i know how to build the frame. There were also a couple left over frames that were in much better shape then mine. Did get warned not to cross the yellow line when i went to grab my empty ammo boxes. Looking forward to trying out my new parts next much. Will be practicing in the meantime
-
The wife and I had our own targets on the same frame, upper and lower. We both aimed center mass and hit the frame in two spots. We started aiming low and left after we could see where we were hitting.lol Sure enough, we hit the black. The scope on the 22 only cost me $20. You get what you pay for. The AR has iron sights, there was a learning curve on that one too. Aim low and center, good to go.
The wife was reminded not to cross the yellow line when just standing there, toes hanging over. They are very self aware about what's going on. For the most part, I took a couple steps back behind the yellow line when a cease fire is called.Over safe/aware if you will, to the point of being annal. One shooter got yelled at on the microphone "not to touch anything and get behind the line."
-
Time to buy a spotter scope.
-
Time to buy a spotter scope.
will also be buying a spotter scope and those big yellow targets that turn green when shot. Considering some snap caps for practice
-
The whole range thing is new to me. On mainland the guys bring a bunch of bottles of water, cans of soda, watermelons,Good Will dinner plates, or clay pigeons. Yeah, the kinda stuff that blows up or makes a mess.
This trip was a good learning experience

Haha nice, I finally shot thru my first handgun frame on Saturday. I'm surprised it lasted this long with so many holes in it.

I have this one, it's pretty good. Lmk if you wanna try it out

I see people on the rifle side with something like this

The rotating objective is nice so you don't have to get up to check where you hit.

That's what the RO told me while smiling and chuckling. My pistol frame had several new holes due to my testing out my LCR last weekend. Was advised by the RO to use heavier slower bullets (158gr) to account for the muzzle rise of the snubbie.
-
Been doing some research to learn the basics of pistol shooting and I was recommended this DVD by Gabriel Suarez. $40 for a dvd sounds expensive, but I hear it is worth the money..

The RO looked at my pistol frame that was in pieces and said good job ;D I have some duct tape, so I will add that to my range bag, along with a fishing net and a wood base.

Upgraded model
Hot shell down shirt (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vAEGkf-Unnk#ws)

The upgraded model is outta my price range. Not to mention the maintenance costs. ;) The fishing net is a good idea. My AR was spraying the bench next to me. Stopping to apologize and pick up brass cuts in to shooting time! Also seen the brass catchers made from netting and PVC, kinda like the target frame idea. Not totally sold on it, more stuff to lug around. :-\

Ya I've seen a few with the PVC frame and netting, covers more area than a net but takes more time to assemble.

I don't believe so.
I'm not sure if the range officers allow the blackpowder guys to shoot inside of that on the far right hand side or not.
-
The web site says 50 and 100 yds., bring your own frame/targets. Steel targets are past that. This weekend all the black powder guys were all the way to the right and at 50yds.

I know I have been there a few times, just feel like for shotgun something like in the 25yd range would be a little better...though shooting skeet is fun.

Yeah I

So...is there anything shorter then 50yds on the rifle side?
I've seen guys set up paper targets closer, at around 25 yards or so, but they needed to pound a stake into the ground and had a special one-sided frame.

so just the legs is fine? legal/legit? thinking this would be best. maybe add hinges in the middle to fold in half

Yup, I do it and a few others including some handgun classes do it too. As long as it stands it's good to go. You only have a problem if your cardboard is bent or if it's raining and cardboard gets soggy, then you lose the support to keep the legs upright. Construction is easy too, just get the 10ft 1x3 and cut it in half.
