I picked up a 308 target rifle and the pake in me was thinking of getting a cheap Plano case for now. Used only for transport from vehicle to range table and storage at home.
Case would house both gun and scope.
I wish sams club had sold longer cases....I have two and they are pretty tuff but they aren't long enough.
Later, maybe I'll spring for a pelican or a skb
Anyway just wondering what you folks are using to transport and store your "precision" target rifle/scope.
I'm leaning to go cheap now and cry later but wondering if I should just cry now......or maybe just be cheap and never cry (at least up to the time something crushes my cheap case and my scope)
If it matters I soft case my 22s and their scopes for transport/storage. I generally keep my ar's and ak's in soft "tactical" cases - they only have irons and rarely go to the range.

Plano AIrGlides looks like it will fit your needs

Hi Ren
Wow that looks nice! I'll be the envy of all my friends:-)
Thanks Ren!

A cheap plano will be fine with just going to the range, unless you throw the case around and fling ammo cans on top of it.
More durable cases are useful for traveling.

I use the cheap Plano cases. They work well for going back and forth to the range. But now I use the Pit Bull soft sided cases I get from Amazon. That is when the gun fits in the case. I am pretty easy and careful with my guns so a thick soft sided case works a little better for me. Only thing is not all my target guns fit in the soft sided case so when that doesn't work I go with the Plano. The Plano case that Ren posted about looks pretty awesome but may not work for me depending on the dimensions of the case.

Hi Dave
The airglide will supposedly be long enough for a 50" rifle
My 22" barrel rifle is about 44" long. So the airglide may be able to fit a 28" barrel rifle but I think I'd stick with a 26" barrel to be safe

Hi Tim,
I am sure the airglide is long enough for any rifle I have. The problem for me comes that I drive a regular cab truck and the only way to lock the airglide case in my truck is in the cab where anyone can see it. The cheap Planos and the soft side cases fit perfectly in my toolbox in the bed. And they are then locked out of sight. That is what I meant when I said the dimensions of the airglide case won't work for me. The airglide case is longer than the space in my toolbox.
The softsided cases actually work better for me as they allow me to fit more than two rifles in my toolbox as using the Planos only allow. Plus I usually have enough room for all my other equipment as well.

Hi Dave
Sorry, thought the case was too short

why not use a range bag like this one below (make sure long enough). You can carry more than 1 gun, all your ammo and gear in it. I personally would not transport other stuff with the gun in a hard case, that's asking for damage. You should carry a separate smaller range bag or backpack if you're using a hard case.

I use soft cases for my 22 rifles that have scopes but for my 308 target rifle I thought a hard case would better prevent my scope from being bumped and possibly affecting the zero and then having to re-zero
I don't mind re-zeroing the 22's - cheap ammo that I don't have to reload. 308 little more expensive and takes time to reload.
Plan to only have rifle and scope in the case. Everything else goes in a rolling toolbox and backpack
I use those soft tactical cases for the ar/ak that I rarely use

just my opinion, but the recoil from firing the gun will provide far more jolts than carrying the rifle around in a soft or hard case. I doubt even dropping the padded cases accidentally will do anything to the rifles. Normally the scope mounts are rated to 50BMG+ recoils, assuming you torque the screws to spec. The only time a hard case is really necessary is when transporting through the airlines.

Tnx! I didn't know that. I'll check out both hard and soft cases. I'm leaning to a hard case since it may offer a little more protection for the scope if the case falls over. Also, for me, hard cases seem easier to store upright in my locker.
