Is it me or does it seem like there is more fuss about traffic that Trump will cause tomorrow vs all of Obama's visits? In the news the articles seem more blown up vs Obama. At work the water cooler talk is all about "Why is Trump staying in Waikiki?" And "he's screwing up everything". Yes uninformed snowflakes do exist in Hawaii

Everybody is getting on the HateTrump Train with few logical reason.
Its a real shame for our media to portray our POTUS like this.
-
A far right president visiting a far left island, I wouldn't be surprised if the protesters try to block the highway before he can reach his tower.

Imagine the videos of secret service running people over on the freeway. Hahahhaha

Compared to Obama, he's not spending vacation here nor does he need to use taxpayer money for a vacation

They're busy with the 200 or so workers and rescuers buried alive in the underground nuke test facility.

Haters gotta hate.
I wonder if POTUS is going to meet with AG doggie Chin?
-
I'm not noticing much of a difference myself.
-
I kinda noticed the media was playing his visit as more traumatic to traffic and disruption while with Obie, it was more like "Oooooh the president is coming home !
-
No bias in the media here.... :grrr:

I thought there was some media bias but then when you think about it, Obama would go to that house in Kailua.
Trump is staying over in Waikiki. That is definitely more disruptive.
Did you guys see the wacko J20 cheerleaders? Hilarious.

I somehow doubt they really care about them unless they left something expensive down there with them.

Obama was on vacay and that was his infamous friends house.
Trump is in hostile territory here so where else can he go?
People dont realize that on his way to an Asian conference he consults his military leaders here.

I MADE IT, left work 1 1/2 hours early to avoid the freeway closure, Made it on 10 minutes before they started closing.

Granted Trump has only been here once but the grumbling I hear about Trump is about equal to the grumbling I heard about Obama.
Maybe Trump grumbling seems worse because you are thinking about it now whereas Obama's trips are not fresh in the memory.
I think both of them are not being financially responsible. They could have stayed on base but nope, bring out all the guns so they can stay wherever.

You've never lived "on base", have you? Exactly which quarters would be sufficient for Trump, his staff, the security detail, the press, and whoever else is with him?
Military bases don't maintain hotel-style accommodations with all the amenities these guests would expect. Not to mention the disruption to unit operations during the visit.
There's a cost no matter where he stays. Implying he should stay in something resembling a Motel 6 (which is often better than most military transient facilities), versus a luxury hotel is ridiculous.

The Presidential detail deploys wherever he goes so the cost is always there.
I'm lucky that I wasn't Obama's friend's neighbors. No privacy for 2 weeks.

Military bases don't maintain hotel-style accommodations
Off topic as holy hell, but this comment popped up something into my swiss cheese memory..
Deploying with my gang to the SEA playground on C-141s. We stopped at Clark AFB in the Philippines at 0-dark thirty.. Got bused to the chow hall. and along the way were blessed with the sight of all the enlisted barracks that looked like typical outlying motel units from a moderate mainland Motel 6 or Holiday Inn.

Yes I have. Not only do they have some fine officer's homes as well as hotels. Are they fancy 5 star resorts? No, but I don't see any reason he has to stay at a fancy resort hotel on taxpayer dime. I am perfectly fine with government officials staying at reasonable accommodations. Not saying Trump has to stay at a bed and breakfast or anything.
I saw the barricades they deployed in Waikiki. Besides the obvious traffic headaches the amount of manpower needed to set up and then secure the place is going to cost a lot. Where Obama stayed actually made more sense tactical speaking but I would bet cost less to secure as well. But I am not trying to lay more blame on one or the other. I think both could have saved a lot of taxpayer money by modifying their travel plans. I don't give Trump a pass on government waste just because he is a republican. Heck his failed prediction that he wouldn't have time to golf should irritate conservatives everywhere given how often he goes golfing now.

Besides on base, can you you identify some places here in Hawaii that President Trump can stay at?

Are we talking about a place that would be more secure to defend or talking about cost?
I brought up the base because it makes the most sense economically and tactically. Not sure why you are asking me for an off base option.
If the base were not an option I would look for a lower cost option that would be more convenient in terms of transportation as well as still be defendable. An hotel near the airport would satisfy all of these I believe.

perhaps the Best Western? Plaza?
-
The military base option would be better since it's a more secured area. He could land at Hickam and stay on base. However it would be difficult to find a vacant general officers house along with vacant homes next to it for support personnel. And the roads would still have to be closed when he travels.
Another option is the Koolina area and flying into Barbers point.
-
We're talking about a place that can accommodate the number of people traveling in the group and maintain close security over all of them. such as renting out a floor in a high rise hotel. Military bases don't normally have those kinds of accommodations unless they have a training mission with lots of transient, temporary guests.
They do have nice houses for the commanders on bases. They happen to be occupied. If they are for some reason empty at the moment, they will be unfurnished. The majority of military housing is also not "on base". Housing areas are all over the place in the Pearl Harbor & Hickam area. Most housing is not on the base itself and is publicly accessible.

Air Force One is not going to land at Barbers. It's too big. They also travel with a cargo plane, usually a C-17, to carry the vehicles and other equipment.

It would be ridiculous for any US President to stay at a Holiday Inn.

He is staying at the Ritz Carton Waikiki.
I thought last week he'd be at the Trump Towers on Saratoga

I imagine it would cost a lot less to furnish vacant units than to do what they did. I am not saying the base is perfectly equipped to handle all of this but I tend to be fiscally conservative and that includes accommodations for a president's stay. He is a government employee that we picked and therefore should be held accountable for costs he makes us pay for. He needs somewhere with enough rooms and that is secure. He does not need 5 star accommodations in the middle of the busiest spot on this island.

How do you know what the President and his staff need? They are still working while traveling. They need facilities they can hold meetings in and control visitation.
It's really tough explaining the realities of VIP travel with someone who only has his imagination to work from.

Nice hotel on Ford Island last I looked. I hear it is well thought of and always booked way in advance.

Ford Island had the same pro and con -- only one bridge in and out. The bridge would be an easy entry point to guard. It would also be easy to target the bridge for an attack. You know the motorcade has to cross the same point coming and going.

I am not going to respond to your disingenuous replies. You miss the entire point. I never suggested he should stay at some 10 room dinky motel. When I said "imagine" I was using deductive reasoning on how much it would cost to purchase/rent basic furnishings to a home vs the hundreds of man hours spent on what they had to do in Waikiki. You aren't even taking the conversation seriously.

I never take trolls seriously. You were never military, yet you still want to argue and butt in where you have no experience. You have no idea what is required for a military base to organize something of the magnitude you're suggesting. The Secret Service does this all the time and have it down to a science.
Nothing new. Move along. :stopjack:

Ahh, the empty "you were never military" argument. It isn't the trump card you think it is. I don't have to have been in the military to know there are hotels and officer's quarters on base. I have seen them with my own eyes and even though they might not always be available given short notice if enough advanced notice is had they could be made an option. Perhaps you would like to explain how had I been in the infantry I would possess some special knowledge about how much it costs a city to prepare to host a president?
You are off topic. I didn't suggest that staying off base is too difficult. I am talking about costs. Expenses that are paid for by our tax dollars. Unlike some people I don't play the fiscal responsibility card only when it suits my political leanings. Trump sure isn't the fiscal conservative type.

A buddy of mine works security at the Ritz Carlton and was a part of the security detail working with the secret service when the President was in town. According to my buddy, the secret service were grumbling that the HPD deliberately closed things down early for President Trump specifically to inconvenience the general public. They said that when Obama was president there was significantly better cooperation, coordination, and timing but since it was a Republican president the police were more or less.. "Meh". My buddy is pretty left leaning, so it was surprising to hear this out of his mouth.
