Background check at the point of sale, man the News is on it as usual....
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the 4473 the federal background check during the POS????

the reality of it is that it can happen anywhere whether there are strong laws or not. That is the risk of life itself. We have become so risk adverse we are coddling ourselves out of reality.
We have reached a point of no returns in regards to legislation because there are so many laws referring to firearms the only population it affects are law abiding citizens.
At this point - lawmakers should really consider empowering the law abiding populace. I know preaching to the choir.
The media contradicts itself on gun control.
They lambast the police and govt for racism and brutality but believe the only people that should have firearms is the govt. and police.
So more power to a racist and fascist govt.

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe HPD runs the NICS checks.  They have to do it for both retail and private, and there is no 4473 for private party transfers.  My gut tells me the gun shops send the 4473s to HPD, and they handle all background checks including NICS.

Maybe an FFL on here (OGC?) can verify if that's correct.  I can't see the gun shop doing the NICS requests for that portion of buyers, and HPD doing the rest.  Having HPD do all of them makes sense.

Of course, government doesn't make that much sense, so I could easily be off base here!

You would think that the government would encourage more people to have ffl licenses, as there's better tracking of firearm transactions and checking of backgrounds that way.  Instead, theyve been clamping down over the past 10 years or longer.   I've toyed with the idea of having a small business out of my home in the past, but ultimately rejected it.

You had me scared.  I thought  the title of this thread was referring to having to take my gun into a shop to get an annual safety check sticker.

There have been proposed laws in the past suggesting exactly that.  Quick google search shows many $0.02 articles proposing exactly that.

Quote
Anyone who wants to own a gun should likewise take a written test on gun safety, proper means of carrying, loading and unloading, and turning the safety on and off to get a gun owner’s permit, though actually shooting it must be done with a licensed gun owner. After an appropriate waiting period, gun owners should take an actual test involving everything from loading and unloading, proper storage, even shooting proficiency. And each gun should be registered in each state it travels to, each gun owner should submit to an annual inspection for their weapon, and each gun purchase should come with mandatory liability insurance. Also, the assault weapons ban should be reinstated, because nobody who isn’t in the military or on the police force should ever need an AK-47 or an AR-15 to hunt deer or protect their families.

Karen Droscoski, deputy attorney general with the Office of the Attorney General’s Criminal Justice Division:
“I’m sure there’s going to be lots of new legislation coming up for the 2018 session due to unfortunately a lot of the things that have recently happened on the mainland.”

sounds like some scary shit coming down the road for 2A in Hawaii.  Yikes!

I think it's more about the culture, and the missionary culture in Hawaii is huge influence. Per Wikipedia, Hawaii has the lowest firearm death rate. When a perp gets angry or commits a violent crime, they're less likely to pull out a gun here than they are in the States that have the highest firearm death rates. I don't believe that the low Hawaii firearm death rate has much to do with the strict gun laws here.

let the panic buying begin!   >:D

that's a short term solution
We should be throwing money at pro gun lobbyists.
Here's a big fat carrot:
We'll get the rail built with funds IF they shall issue CCW and suppressors

Our state should police themselves...they can't keep us safe. We need crazy people safety checks.

They think these events are a joke as they happen with frequency.
What is this a sick game of catch and release to keep people busy ?

We keep passing all these laws that aren't enforced.
The cell phone walking the street ban...yeah that works. Anyone spend 15 minutes in downtown can see that. Heck spend ONE afternoon in traffic and we can't keep ourselves from using phones while driving.

politicians aren't interested in saving lives.
they are only interested in climbing the political ladder
the talk of stricter gun laws in politics is just that, politics
being anti-gun gets the liberal/democrat vote
all you have to do to win an election in Hawaii is be a democrat and do nothing and you win:  just look at Ige.  that's his resume in a nut shell
