Title: Fireworks 12/31/17
Post by: 2ahavvaii on December 22, 2017, 04:15:45 PM
The news reported that they sold something like 25% more permits this year than last.  I somehow doubt the stores are bringing in 25% more than they did previously.

For Don Quiote, anyone have experience on what time they open on 12/26, and what the situation with the lines and stuff is?  Like is it better to go a few hours after opening to wait for the line to die down?

TIA  :shaka:

Yeah but part of me always gets nostalgic about when I was a kid and the neighborhood would go off at Midnight...

For the past month they've been firing off lots of home-made artillery/Chinese sky candy at night in Nalo. Usually it's the guys at Bellows making all the noise. Not sure how things are around the island but the east side is definitely warmed up and ready to party.

Don Quijote is madness. Crazy. You can wait in line early if you have the time or you can go later in the day and hope the stores are not sold out.

I went to buy my 1 permit for $25 last week, the lady at the counter said the person before me bought 100 permits.

It will suck if you're in line and the person who bought 100 permits is in front of you.

Yeah, they way they designed the permit system is designed ot discourage people buying them.   It's almost pointless, might as well just have the stores tack on $25 per 10k fireworks bought instead.  No need for useless paperwork.  I think on the neighbor islands, they sell em in the stores, and not the dmvs.

The economy pumping, so people get plenty money to burn on fireworks and other discretionary spending.  In 5 years, the # of permits sold almost doubled.  It's over 20k this year.
10,922 in 2013, 11,144 in 2014, 13,811 in 2015 and 17,151 in 2016.

I don't know but I've been told that there are all the fireworks you want, if you know the right folks.
Only costs money... cash no receipt, and don't ask too many questions.
The black market is happy to oblige.
This is the Honolulu skyline a couple years ago at midnight New years
Did I mention that Ariels are illegal?
Aloha :D

lol.... there's youtube videos out there that shows the aiea/pearl city area at midnight, and it looked like professional shows going on everywhere.

Yeah, not sure on the wisdom of making most "small" fireworks illegal.  Instead of spending most of new years sitting back watching or helping the keeds play fireworks, people are telling the keeds to stand back while they set off massive aerial displays, which they can buy in quantities with no hassle, no permits, etc.

I suppose it would be nice if smaller firecrackers are available on the black market, but who would import and buy fountains and crackling balls illegally when you can  get aerial displays instead?  Cops have a tough time regulating, as there's so many people doing it.  It's kinda like attempting to enforce the cell phone walking law.  I work in downtown, which by far has the greatest # of violators (aside from waikiki probably), and people do it all the time, and right in front of the cops going to the courthouse.  Haven't seen one ticket yet.

Much as the case with marijuana, I think legalization and regulation is the better answer.  By leaving the smaller firecrackers and  less powerful and noisy aerial displays legal (and much much cheaper), you chop the legs out from the black market importers, who will always have a customer base for big bombs, but one that's much smaller than it is currently.  Outright prohibition isn't really a good answer or effective solution when there is a strong public demand for a good or service.

Pearl City? You should see the action in Waipahu!

I grew up in PC and used to some competition on who “had more” back on the day. One house would light up something. Then another would, and so on. No where near as how it used to be.

Pearl City Don Quijote looked to have only a couple pallets left at 0900. The 10,000 (aka 2500) firecrackers were $23.99
Pearl City Longs had a bunch and nobody buying them Kahuna brand 10,000 (2500) were $19.99

Costco had the best price for the novelty packages between Longs, DQ, and Costco.

I went around 9:00AM to PC DQ, no line.  They had a decent enough selection to buy the longer string and smaller stuff for me. I was happy.  Only 2 ppls in front of me in line.  I think the 26th landing on a work day helped a lot.

I haven't purchased fire crackers since they banned fire works for the following reasons:

1) I'm not Chinese (cultural reason to pop)
2) To me, it's no fun.  Compared to lighting stuff all night long
3) Don't want to apply for a permit (permits suck)
4) No guarantee I'll get to buy even with a permit.  So I waste my time.

The neighbor has been setting off at least one rocket each night. I've been tempted to go over and ask where he got them from.

to buy yourself or just curious who gave him "da list"?  It's likely way too late if you're thinking of buying now.

this whole permit system is stupid
They should have retailers check their inventories to make sure people are just buying what their permits allow. I'd say the City should have a Fireworks Commission with inspectors. Have every package of fireworks serialized and accounted for. Every person getting a permit join us in the Rapback system.

holy permits batman.

so permits to buy fireworks, limited time and amount and type?  Thank you gov for letting me celebrate my permitted freedom.  I cant wait to get my bathroom permits and my sunset observing permit and my banana growing permit.  So glad I am protected against myself.  Am I required to wear a diaper?  I did not get a remove diaper permit when I got here.

Don't laugh too much about bathroom permits.  Anybody here remember the brief period of time about 50 years ago when you had to put a dime to unlock the restroom stall door at the airport?  Public outrage and broken doors ended that government money making scheme.

I don't think these permits nor these laws banning illegals are having any effect...
If I was the legislator that crafted any of those bills I'd be ashamed and just rescind it. Honolulu is laughing at these laws. O0

It's 10:20 and my neighbors are still popping firecrackers after karaoke. I suppose they don't need to work but I still need to finish my paper :grrr: It's times like this I'd go for a ban. It all boils down to being mindful and not an asshole.

Police are now able to use video evidence to issue fireworks citations, but the person who recorded the video must be willing to testify in court.  That creates a situation where the videographer would open himself and his household up to retaliation from the neighbors.  Therefore, most are reluctant to report violators and provide needed evidence.

and that's just one part of the problem.

It's the biggest problem on the "demand" side of the equation.  If no one helps the police identify the law breakers, there isn't much chance of them catching more than a few while in the act.

The other side, the "supply" side, needs to be better policed as well.  The report said a truck with $25K in illegal fireworks was stopped.  The people driving were released, and a felony investigation was opened.

Just a drop in the bucket.

Quote
A tally on the number of citations issued was not immediately available, but police Deputy Chief
John McCarthy said officers did cite two men who were making a delivery of illegal aerial fireworks
in a large U-Haul truck in Kaneohe.

The two were not arrested, but a felony investigation has been opened.

The value of the hundreds of pounds of illegal aerials in the truck was $25,000, police sources said.
