quick question - what is done with the range brass left in the bucket at kokohead? is it something the city workers takes to recycle, is it a "free for all" scrounge, does the RSOs take it home to sort, etc?
Just curious.... I think typically the stuff left in there isn't great anyways, 9mm, 22lr, and maybe 40s&w on the pistol side, and typically 223 and 22lr on the rifle side.

Ive rummaged through the rifle side. I dont dare look in the silhouette one as they lay claim to all brass that hits the ground.

I saw a confrontation at the silly side a couple weeks ago when someone was picking through the bucket

Really?
I’ve seen people tell the brass scavengers to hold off until the group had a chance to pick up first.
I usually don’t pick up my brass when I shoot matches, so whatevers. If people want it, I’m cool with that.

I've never had a problem picking up our group's brass, I never touch anything after it goes in the bucket, though

Yeah. I will help pick up, but what goes in the bucket I assume the group sorts and does with what they please. If I was reloading, I’d pick up and stash here and there. As it is, I have a bunch of brass I’ve saved and no plans for it in near future.

Silly side used to have the brass vultures.
Not in the bucket but off the ground.
Don't know about now as it's been a while.
-
Not sure what is done with the brass. I assune the range guys reload it or recycle it for their party fund.
If you need brass, just ask them if you can pick out of it

On the Silhouette side uncle denies clams all brass in bucket/, but i ask the ppl if i can have the brass before they put in bucket no problems, just dont ask ever person there hell get pissed but they are super cool & nice over there. :shaka:

Yeah that totally makes sense on the silhouette side. However, if a group wants to save their brass, shouldn't they dump it in their own bucket versus the "range bucket"? Honestly in my mind, the range bucket is essentially like a recyclable trash bin for soda cans. If you throw your soda can away, you wouldn't later get mad when you se the homeless guy grab it out of the trash or the city guys pick it up for recycling. back in the day before I knew the range bucket existed, I used to just dump crappy brass in the trash cans. lol

I was actually thinking of the action bays. But yeah, if you’re saving brass, I assume most have their own bins, bags, etc.

after the range closes on Saturday and sunday, a couple guys come and walk the whole range picking up brass
I've seen once or twice people come and dig in the berm for lead, not sure what they do with it

Looking for the copper jacketing, maybe? Making lead fishing weights?

the "uncle" on the silly side sells bags of brass at the gun show. I don't know where he gets it.

he doesn't sell the common calibers, so I bet he or the club resell/recycle/reload them

I know some fishermen who melt em down for casting fishing leads.

Mitch doesn't like crimps so he's given me a bag of LC brass after I asked nicely. I once had two guys next to me shoot about 700 rounds of .223. They weren't gonna keep them so I told them to dump the brass into my cart. Sometimes I pick up a case on the ground and if it looks nice, then I'll politely ask the shooter if he keeps his brass and if not, have them drop it in my cart. I don't think the ROs mind. Personally, I don't like Federal because they're too short.
I wonder if digging in the berm causes accelerated erosion. I don't imagine there's much lead in the sand. The trenches are getting so deep that they're becoming a fall hazard and the C&C will have to install guardrails.

or simply bring in a small dozer and grade the land and clean up the berm a bit. It's not like the city maintains the range often.

Have you met our government? ;) That would be too obvious of an answer. Ideally, they would install drainage, flatten it out, and put down a layer of gravel. No more brass hiding in the grass...

Yeah I wondered what they were digging for in the berm and what they did with it. I guess melting makes sense. I would rather go diving for lead than dig in that berm.

i can just imagine him digging in the berm and panning for lead like a prospector.

ive gotten into it with the silhouette range guy before because the shooter next to me quickly swept up a bunch of my shells along with his and emptied them into the bucket while i was helping a new shooter i brought. i only reached in for the dozen 10mm cases i was trying to keep and he started yelling. i learned that if you really want your brass its best to not let them pile up too long or people will either step on them or vulture them(sometimes inadvertently by sweeping it up for you)

What an asshole. I dont know how a club like that can homestead on a City park as they do.

hmmm, that's actually pretty messed up.
For me, I mainly shoot 9 on the pistol side, and don't reload it, so it's generally not too awkward. I sweep my area, and see if anyone nearby happens to want the brass. if not, I dump it in the bucket. I also like to clean up a little bit further away from me as well since my pistol ejects brass far and wide. I'll check if the nearby shooter wants to keep their brass, if so, I'll make it nice and leave the brass near them.

I’m generally the same way. I usually have a brass net but sometimes I forget. Or if I’m with a bunch of friends, there’s usually brass all over. I’ll usually sweep up here and there. If there are other shooters I’ll either ask if they are saving their brass or try to notice if they are picking them up. If they are picking them up, I’ll usually make sure to ask if they want to check the pan before I dump them. If they are shooting something that looks expensive, I’ll usually pick out the brass for them, like .45 ACP. They are usually super appreciative.
For the most part, shooters are usually pretty cool and chill. If they’re an asshole, whatevers. I’m there to have fun.

That stinks. Totally understandable and it’s not like you’re trying to take advantage of other shooters brass.

The guy next to me had a wooden handle net taped to a flexible microphone stand and clamped to the table. I was impressed.

Too late.
I put them back where they came from.
Check the backstop around firing point 20.
They're easy to spot because they have 2 sets of rifling marks.

I used to do that with a screen box when I was casting a lot of bullets.
Some guys do that now to make fishing lead.

When I shoot my 10mm I watch them carefully since they tend to launch far and people don't know they are somewhat hard to get now.
On the pistol side, the rso saw me shooting the 10mm and gave me back a shell that went in the bucket. ..Make friends with the RO.
