You like your colts eh?
I seen your nice colt revolvers :shaka:

RIA 9 mm
Haven’t shot it much. I’d like to swap out the plain front sight to a FO one and shoot some matches with it though.
I’d love to own Springfield and Colt 1911s one day as well.

Here is a Colt Officer's Model customized by some friends.

My 1st...really good shooter

Heres a couple of DIY builds. Downside of parts guns is poor resale
(talking from experience). But, can build as time and budget allow.
Being a lefty with small hands, an ambi safety and short trigger is a
must. One on top is a 45, RIA stock upper, caspian frame, name
brand frame parts. Bottom is a 9mm, RIA stock upper, essex frame,
colt or better frame parts. Bought the uppers and grips from a couple
of nice members here. Will eventually get a checkering jig.

I saw him a few months ago.
He was pretty frail.

Ren...he did this for me back in 1992/1993 when I was part of the Guard pistol team. I don't know what he is like now and his schedule/timeline.

Wow. I wasn't old enough to own a pistol then. Looks pristine. Bo Mar sights are made anymore :(

The next gun down the road is a 1911 for me. I was looking at the SIG's. I don't want to be spending $1500+ on a 1911. I'm not at the point where I would appreciate or can tell the diff between a $1K and a $2K 1911. I did see a few colts that were about $800ish, but they look super basic. And the Sigs look way cooler. My pistol are tools so if they get dirty or dinged up, I don't care. That's the main reason why I don't want an expensive 1911. I won't want to shoot it.
Is Sig a good brand for the price?
Also I heard the mags don't last very long. And to just replace them instead of trying to fix them.

I have shot my friend's Sig Nightmare. it's a very nice 1911. good feel, grips, trigger, has the bobtail grip. I really like it. it feels comparable quality to my Springfield RO. I think price is around the same, in the $1k range
my friend hasn't had any issues with his Sig 1911. don't know about the mags, although 1911 mags are easy to find
good luck! :shaka:

Are all 1911 grips interchangeable?
The Sig 1911 I tried, looks like Sig took it off their website. But it had real aggressive grips similar to WTFShane's one, but even more textured.

I know Sig did some grips that were part of the magwell. I think it was part of the Scorpion series.
Edit: I got mixed up and thought you asked about magwells earlier. It was different site.
Yes, most 1911 grips are interchangeable. Just look out for certain things like frame size, bobtail frame, what style of ambidextrous safety it has, use the proper screws if slim grips, etc.

Kinda Douchey of me but I'm not a fan of the external extractor, I'm sure they function fine but it's just not supposed to be there  That said I've read advantages/disadvantages of both.

I bought these mags for my Sig nightmare Fullsize Fastback 1911:
https://www.midwayusa.com/product/720215/wilson-combat-elite-tactical-magazine-etm-with-base-pad-1911-government-commander-45-acp-8-round
They work perfectly with the pistol, and are almost identical in fit and appearance compared to the Sig mags that came with it.
I had a birthday discount at Midway, so I treated myself to these. After researching a variety of 1911 mags, these Wilson ETM (Elite Tactical Magazine) 8 rd stainless came out as the most often recommended. No problems so far.
The 1911 has lots of OEM mag manufacturers out there. If someone is saying the mags don't last long, I'd ask, (1) what brand, (2) what model, and (3) how many rounds total?
As for Sig 1911 quality, I can only speak to the Nightmare. I love the silver & black 2-tone finishes, and its tolerances are very tight. The pistol balances in my hand perfectly, and it just feels "right".
I bought it online from GrabAGun when they still shipped to Hawaii. It was on sale for $825 with free shipping plus my local FFL fee. Now they have it listed for $1,079.99.
When I first started going to the range again, I was eyeing the Kimber 1911s. After research, I found the quality had dropped from when I first read up on them. Now, I'd recommend a Sig over a current model Kimber. The older models, if you can find one new or slightly used, would still be a good choice.
It's hard to go wrong with any Sig. I'd recommend you set a budget first, then make a list of all the 1911s in that range you like. If price isn't an issue, then it comes down to what model suits your needs best. If you really want to turn heads, an FBI Professional Model for about $3,000 would be an option. The tolerances are so tight, you'll make going to the range a priority just to put rounds through it and loosen it up enough to eventually rack the slide by hand. When Hickok45 did a video on that 1911, he had to rack it against the table.

Nice Zips! If I were to get a 1911 in 45, it would be a SA. That’s one model I looked at pretty closely. Maybe if 45 ammo was cheaper.

YG's had a SA RO 45acp with adjustable sights on sale last week for $700-something. I was very tempted. If we didnt have the BS hawaii registration, I would have got it. Not sure if it's still there.

Bought both Les Baer 1911s from 1911 Heaven with the "1.5 inch guarantee at 50 yards" and sent them off to Rob Schauland of Alchemy Custom for upgrades.
Rob Schauland worked for Les Baer Custom until he opened Alchemy Custom.

Recently both Rob Schauland and Alchemy Custom became part of Cabot Gun Company.

Wilson Combat 1911: Classic Supergrade (45acp)
and
Classic (9mm)
Got them from George Talia of www.migunslingers.com
I was able to choose all the custom features and parts on these pistols, and George placed
the orders into Wilson Combat for me.
Both SS frame with high-polish Baron bluing on slide
Both serrated top of slide 30LPI with gold bead front sight
Both flush cut, reverse crown muzzle
Both recessed slide stop notch
Both 2.75 lb. triggers (WC required a signed Waiver of Liability form)
Supergrade: carry cuts and ball-endmill cuts on slide
Supergrade: checkered rear of slide 40LPI
Classic: front serrations on slide (standard)
Classic: serrated rear of slide 40LPI
All Bullet Proof parts: thumb safety, grip safety, magwell, mag release
Update: After a few years the Supergrade's slide is now a "plum" or "burgundy" color.
While it is considered a bluing defect, I like the color.
Classic 9mm: 4 months wait time
Supergrade 45acp: 2years 10months wait time

got this holster from Simply Rugged
simple holster. I got it just bc it was on sale. I would order a more fancy one if we had carry here but since we live Hawaii and cannot carry theres no sense to get a real expensive one. but just for home carry its good
Leather is super nice. looks like its conditioned really well. the look and feel of it is much better than others I've handled. not like i'm an expert, but the leather feels really nice and its a great fit for the 1911

A friend once told me every shooter should have a Glock, Sig, and a 1911. So I bit the literal bullet and picked up a Springfield, and I gotta say, I wish I'd made the switch sooner. I'll do a review down the road, probably closer to 3K rounds. I have almost 900 on it since I picked it up in the beginning of the year.

I heard similar.
A Glock, because it's the one you want in a pinch.
A Sig, because it's the one you can shoot better than a Glock.
A 1911, because you need to learn to operate one, and the ergonomics are the "standard" against which all other handguns are compared.
If not a 1911 right away, at least a Ruger 22/45 target pistol. The "45" in the model number means the grip angle and feel are very close to a 1911 .45. Helps teach muscle memory for when you get a 1911.
-
everyone should have at least one 1911 bc this is America!

This was the model one step up in grade. They offered a green finish along with the checkering on the front strap. I was thinking about picking up a Colt M45A1, but everyone said not to do it. I'm not sure if that was because it's an 80 series model or if they were remembering all the problems it had with the finish when it first got issued.

I dont own any of them. Gotta get my priorities. Spend too much on purple gun stuff.

I've had a 10mm 1911 for around 25 years. Love the cartridge. You can throttle it up or down.
You need to play with the springs if you play with the loads though.
Full power ammo is formidable.

New Version! FNX-45 Tactical w/Threaded Suppressor Barrel; RMR Mount Included; and Tactical Rail Below ...
It's a lot bigger than the pictures - However, It does hurt my upper wrist a bit if I don't watch how I grip it - That is a little disappointing ...
Anyone have any suggestions on how to avoid this - Or a similar experience as this? Please LMK ...

nice! I like that pistol even if its not a 1911 ;)
maybe you are gripping too low on the grip, resulting in more muzzle flip and more stress on your wrist
try a higher grip so the recoil is more straight back and less muzzle flip

Wow I just saw your question today.
To answer your question, yes it's a delta.
I don't bring it out very often because it flings brass pretty far with full power loads.
Even with the double spring setup.
It pains me to lose 10mm brass. :(

Springfield Long Beach Operator
Background
The Long Beach Operator is a 1911-A1 model handgun from Springfield Armory that closely mimics it's parent pistol, the MC Operator. Per a request from the Long Beach, California Police Department, Springfield Armory built the Springfield Loaded Operator Long Beach Police Mod 1911, more commonly called, "the Long Beach Operator".
How the Long Beach Operator Came to Be
Long Beach Police Department placed a RFQ with Springfield Armory for several hundred custom spec'd 1911s for the entire police department. Springfield Armory designed the Long Beach Operator and started to manufacture them as quickly as possible in order to fill the order when the LBPD would later place the order. LBPD finally placed the order but lowered the quantity to 147 1911-A1 Handguns, so as to only issue them to their SWAT and Tactical Teams. Springfield Armory finished building somewhere right under 1000 of these Long Beach Operators, and after filling LBPD's order, sold off the remaining inventory on the Civilian market as a Limited Run, Loaded Operator Long Beach Police Mod. There is none and has never been any information pertaining to the LB Operator at Springfield's website, www.springfield-armory.com, as it is not a standard production model but a limited run. It should be noted that Springfield Armory still builds the Long Beach Operator at least once every two years in quantities of less than 500 at a time, to ship to distributors. Because of this, if the LB Operator is a 1911 you want to purchase, it could take several months to find one, and if you do see one, you should purchase it right away and not pass it up, as most gun stores will have less than 10 of them on hand.
Parts and Differences
Like all Springfield model 1911s, the LB Operator is a series 70 pistol and does not feature the firing pin safety plunger in the slide, nor does it contain the extra parts on the sear/disconnector pin used to deactivate the firing pin saftey plunger. Unlike the MC Operator from which the Long Beach Operator spawned, the LB Operator is entirely coated in Springfield's propriety coating Armory Kote, in Satin Black. The entire gun is built on Carbon Steel Forgings, and contains all parts that the MC Operator does, minus the MEUSOC standard Pachmayr Gripper Wraparound Grips. The LB Operator utilizes a pair of Black G10 Grips made by 10-8 Performance. Also, unlike the MC Operator the LB Operator has an extended bolt-on magwell flaring from the bottom of the handguns grip, this helps make tactical mag changes quicker and easier for the shooter. Tijicon's Tritium Night Sights in a Novak sight are standard on the LB Operator as well as a SS Match Grade barrel and GI Guide Rod assembly. The LB Operator comes chambered only in .45ACP, like all good 1911's do. Springfield has been known to ship the LB Operator with a number of different magazines, all of which come with the rubber slam pad on the bottom due to the grips magwell. Early model LB Operators shipped with Wilson Combat 47D mags or Wilson Combat 47 mags. Most models built within the last couple years ship with 8rd nickel plated Mecgar mags.
This article is full of falsehoods. The Long beach operator came into being with a joint testing between Academy range staff and swat personel for a tactical 1911 to replace single stack and high cap para-ordinance pistols. The tested mc operator won the competition and was modified to include G10 grips, a magazine well, all black finish and a pinned ejector. This became the Long Beach version and 150 pstols were ordered for issue to new recruits and swat team members. At no time was a whole department purchase on the table. The version of this gun became popular and is still available special order from springfield armory

my Long Beach Operator came very tight slide to frame and barrel to bushing. but after about 600 rounds, it is not as tight, and zero malfunctions in those 600 rounds. racking the slide is much easier now. at first it was hard racking the slide, but that was due to the tight fit. I also needed to use a bushing wrench to move the bushing. at first that thing would not budge, but now I can use just my fingers, but I still use the wrench bc its easier. the slide to frame and barrel to bushing are hand fitted. flared magwell, but not too big as to make it like a race gun. I never did a formal accuracy test, but I can tell it is very accurate. trigger is a crisp 3 lbs 6.7 oz. it is a really great 1911 for not being a custom one. It's my favorite 1911 and my favorite semiauto handgun. :shaka:

Never warmed up to the newer versions of the 1911.....
The standard 1911 by WC or Les Baer never gave me problems like this.............
The LBs that I have, I recall that 2 or 3 of them had that "failure to return to battery" issue in the first 100 rounds or so, due to the LB being so damn tight.
The problem disappeared and never returned.

I have a Springfield RO Elite target that had same issue in the first 150-200 rounds maybe 1 out of 20 rounds where it just slightly would not go fully into battery but after that the issue went away. The slide to frame was very tight at first

Asking 2aHawaii readers about bluing: What would you do if your gun bluing starts turning into a plum color?
My Wilson Combat Supergrade 45 was made in October 2015. Looking at the original pictures some 7 years ago, it was a deluxe Baron bluing BLUE.
I noticed a tinge of plum color a couple of years ago, but didn't think much of it. A recent photo that I took with my phone in the sunlight
shows me that the plum color has gotten deeper.........
It seems that the temperature of the bluing salts make it turn plum color, from what I've read on the internet.....
See the first picture and the recent picture.

I'm on the fence on whether to send it to Wilson Combat for re-bluing..... don't know if they would re-do it at no charge or maybe I'll have to pay the full price......
If I do send it back, I want the front portion of the slide with the carry cuts and ball endmill cuts polished and also deluxe-blued; right now it's matte bead-blasted....
What would you do? Keep it as is? Send it back?

You have to do what makes you happy/satisfied, especially with a gun of that value. Seems like it's bothering you, so I would at least contact WC to see what options are, even if you have to pay some $$$ to address.
Personally, I would just shoot it and enjoy it. Including any wear the guns shows through use. That said, I don't own a high dollar pistol like that, though I wanted one for a long time.
-
What would I do?
I would focus on the front sight instead of the color of the slide.
-
drck1000, yes, it seems to be bothering me which is why I was thinking of having it reblued......
however, you would just shoot it, no?............
Even oldfart says worry about the front sight instead of the color of the slide............
I'll just let it go for now and not let it bother me.........
I guess there's no Kokohead to go to nowadays, so I'm just cleaning & re-cleaning my guns for lack of a better thing to do...........
nitpicking every little thing on my guns.....
This WC shoots real tight when it came to me. I don't want to have the slide re-blued which might disturb the fit of the slide to the frame and ruin the "harmonics".
If and when it shoots loose, or needs some sort of tuning, I'll send the whole pistol back and then
raise the issue of the plum-color slide, and see what they say.
-

Would I shoot it? Totally! I don't have much .45 acp ammo, but if you gave me that pistol, I'd shoot the heck out of it. It's what it wants to do, be a sweet shooting pistol! ;D
From what you said above, I would at least contact W/C and see what can be done. Maybe they'll say send it back and they'll redo it. Being satisfied, completely satisfied with anything you own is very important. For me, finish of a pistol isn't something that I care about. I mean I don't abuse my firearms, but primary enjoyment I get is from shooting them. I do very much understand some firearms are meant to be admired and shown off.
-
Some people would pay extra to have a plum colored gun.
If you told people that you paid Wilson an extra $100 for the "deluxe plum finish option", they would believe you.
-

:D You probably right !
After I started this topic, I asked Steve Boelter in Las Vegas about sending the slide back to WC...... he said
"Would you be satisfied if WC reblued the slide beautifully, but somehow the pistol didn't shoot as well as the plum slide?
Why would you jeopardize the pistol's accuracy to change the slide's color? The WC gunsmiths got everything to work
perfectly and now you want to disturb the harmonics of their work?"
I have to agree with drck1000, oldfart and Steve that they are correct............
-
to reblue theyd probably have to subject the slide to sand blasting - a destructive process
