I was watching the latest "The Talking Dead" episode and a question was brought up, "What vehicle would you have in a zombie apocalypse?"
And we all know, a zombie apocalypse or not, it's prepping with a different purpose.
So what vehicle would you guys man-up if you knew... a week in advance the end is near? Or even now?
Realistic choice and dream choice :P

IMHO it would have to be a diesel truck of some kind for the following reasons:
you can make diesel in a pinch; or use vegetable/peanut oil
diesels have a very high torque to power ratio than its gasoline counterpart. this reason is most important to me... you can push or pull "stuff" into or out of the way.
on an older diesel vehicle, it would have mechanical injection and therefore not subject to the effects of an EMP.
today's diesels are super fuel efficient(characteristically runs lean), quiet, and don't smell like those of previous decades. noise and scent discipline are important to not give up your position. use further methods to muffler an older diesel.
you can store diesel for 10 years... maybe more. so visits to the gas station can be avoided.
diesels with a turbo only increases the fun factor... and power!
and... all wheel drive is preferable.
short answer: an old diesel ford/chevy/unimog that's not electronically fuel injected, with 4 wheel drive. maybe throw in a winch while we're at it. heck, armor it too!!
ymmv. pun intended.

Any vehicle? A sailboat. Reasons: no gas needed, travel inter island, go fishing (food source) but most importantly is that it isolates u from the chaos on the island.
-
Nuclear powered submarine. 5 year fuel supply, ample living space, able to go sit under the polar ice caps for a year while things settle down.
-
I like duchi's choice. Reinforce that front grill with a slab of concrete or something
As far as diesel or not, I'm sure that there will be lots of cars/stations to loot gas from once people start turning. I'd just want a truck that probably has 16-17" tires as there are probably a decent surplus at all of the lube shops to grab a dozen or so pairs for whenever/if-ever they pop.
I was thinking along the lines of a truck/SUV also for transportation.
Being in Hawaii, a boat has crossed my mind but I have no nautical know-how to operate one, much less travel island to island haha.
Tom_G, enough space for food? Or would you surface every so often to hunt 8)

The ultimate no fuel land vehicle...

Ahem.... right.
A sailboat is probably the most practical thing for the islands in general, but unless you want to be down at the docks defending if from Zombies you'd best be out to sea with it before things get into full swing.
Horse would be a good long term option, I think. Have a few, or plan with the neighbors to have both mares and stallions. After the zombies settle down they'll make more vehicles for you and your remaining friends.

What about that "duck tours" vehicle. It drives on land and also in water.

this!

Aircraft carrier? ???

I'd have to go nuclear sub too. Maybe if we get enough guys we could do a group buy? I know a guy who knows a guy who knew a guy who was used to draw pictures of submarines when he was a kid. Maybe he can hook us up.

Since we're dreaming, can I have a magic unicorn?

Since we're dreaming, can I have a magic unicorn?
You'd betta check wit Tom first, not sure if he'll let ya bring it on da submarine....lol!!
-
I would have to say mountain bike or some enduro of some sort...save some gas and can go anywhere.

I figure if I wear a yellow shirt I'm bound to get some alien kitty and will never be killed.

Then blow up all the zombies at once

or maybe a military stryker, armored car, up armored hummer, up armored Grave Digger.........
in the meantime I'll just have to go 3rd world militia style and get some homies with AK's in the back of my Tacoma

Hey, at least MY fantasy exists! And there is a chance, albeit slim, that I could pull it off.

Submarine would be a terrible end of the world vehicle. Those things are entirely dependent on a steady diet of repair parts and skilled civilian labor to keep 'em going. (And sometimes it's iffy even then...) We're talking about one of the most complex machines ever devised in the minds of men here.
I second the diesel truck for the aforementioned reasons, with a decent little rodeo trailer. They make trailers for people on the rodeo circuit that have room for two horses, some feed and water for them, and a small little camper-type setup in the front. Usually just a dressing/grab a snack room with a fold-out bunk or two, but they're pretty rugged for use in horse pastures and you'd be pretty comfortable when you made camp. Additional bonus: horses spook easily; they'd probably pick up on incoming zombies and raise hell long before you would.

Had a scary thought.... What if the zombies got to the horse... No way to outrun one!

What about a balloon?

Too much like a mini-van for me. Plus you'd need this guy to maintain/repair it...

If I couldn't "borrow" a Stryker, I'd probably keep it simple with a 4x4 with a bio-diesel conversion or a semi w/ sleeper cab...and no I don't mean Optimus Prime (I'm an adult).

Donkey, because there's no such thing as zombies and you can always take a donkey trail while the the people down on the road are setting up ambushes to kill each other for their trucks.
