Looking to buy an ACOG or wither a 1x4 (Patrol optic or similar). I like the fact that the ACOG is battery-less and can last a while. Some of the 1x4's that I looked into are nice, but require battery...leaning towards the ACOG, but anything I should know about before pulling the trigger, no pun intended! Any reasons why you guys might hate an ACOG? Need advice! Mahalo :shaka: :shaka: :shaka:

ACOG 4 nice for more distance.
Red dot is nice for CQ
JMHO even tho I'm pretty much an Iron Sght's kind guy.
No battery', no depletion factor, no scratches. :D

I have always had an issue with all that equipment sticking up there to be damaged or snag on things if you are expecting to move a lot. Fine for fixed position shooting of course.
An EOtech is far less obtrusive, but is still quite a lump. Was trained with irons and still use them, though the fast shot aspect of a smaller holo sight intriques me. Had an M4 clone a while back and it was more cumbersome than a 3x9 scope.

Having come from an aim point pro, the red dot is nice but even thought the battery lasted a while, it was issue about worrying about the longevity of the battery. I like it but having shot through various ACOG the sight picture is nicer.

I think Aimpoint battery's last 5-7 years, even when running.
I just simply change the cheap little battery evrey 5 years (once so far) and keep an extra. :geekdanc:

The reason why I never bought one is because for the price, I can buy more guns, ammo, accessories, etc...Also I'm not going to be in the bush or shoot my rifle more than 50 yards. Maybe if I were in the mainland then I might reconsider.
That's just by 2 cents.

ACOGs are tough, simpler and small compared to a variable 1-4x
The eye relief on the TA31s is short and there is some parallax issues so head position is critical.
I like it and its on my SHTF AR

Same. They last incredibly long and are worth paying the premium. I went through two cheaper red dots that died before spending on the aimpoint.
Magpul flip sights that make a nice lower third cowitness as backup.

It depends on the type of shooting you do primarily or your overall goals. They are not the best for up close, and not the best for longer distances. Mid-range and under adverse conditions is where they do well. I was supplied with one for several years, with a top mounted Doc Optic and even 45* mounting. Even though it was supplied, I preferred to either run a pure red dot or a variable scope. On my own budget, I have more red dots and scopes than I can count at this point, but I have never desired to purchase an ACOG out of pocket.

Learning to shoot with both eyes open
PRO:
Rugged and reliable. Both the Marine Corps and Army have adopted it.
Lighter than some traditional scopes of the same ability
I am biased and love my ACOG. Intermediate distances are it's strong suit. With practice you can get used to shooting with it in close (<50 yards).

Pros
Very clear glass
Huge field or view at 100 yards
Very durable
Very light compared to variable scopes
The chevron and accs reticles are pretty good
Cons
Bad eye relief. The eye relief is around 1 inch meaning you have to have your stock collapsed or remove your rear sight to get proper positioning
Fixed 4x power. Slower than a red dot within 75 yards. Can't increase power if you needed too.
The fiber optic is usually too bright requiring you to cover it and adjust with electrical tape.
