Title: Fire investigators discover live ammo inside abandoned Waikiki gun range

Waikiki resident Dave Moskowitz worked at the gun club years ago says it is a massive hazardous waste site with stray ammo and gun powder residue imbedded in walls and ventilation systems.
"It's like having a bomb. It's like having an IED, improvised explosive device. A large, 900-square-foot improvised explosive device sitting next to you as your neighbor," Moskowitz said.

 :wtf:

Sounds a bit exaggerated.  Maybe a fire hazard but a bomb?

That place was ghetto in a ghetto area.  Went inside the entrance but never saw the actual range.  I think Honolulu firearns may have bought their equipment.  They're expanding their range and have one of the SWAT banners flying outside.

Found live ammo, probably a few rounds that fell under the counter.

I did hear one advocate on the radio talk about lead exposure at gun ranges. You would think that firing lead core bullets has a direct link to global warming and the extinction of polar bears. It was the epitome of spurious science.

I agree, fire hazard yes....however, upon closure of the facility, isn't there supposed to be an inspection by HPD, HFD and the health department to insure that the facility is CLEAR of brass, loose UN-fired ammunition & overall fire hazards and airborne lead exposure?

Doesn't seem like that was implemented. If Honolulu Firearms personnel did take possession of the equipment at the facility, wouldn't they have seen the debris and entered the facility with some sort of PPE?

I took a few classes in range development.  Due to lead exposure, construction and cleaning personnel have to wear full body suits and breath through filters or respirators and the area has to be contained.  Very costly stuff so I'm not surprised the range owners didn't care.

Most older indoor ranges have poor ventilation designs which leads to inhaling lead and spreading high levels of lead contamination throughout the range and store.  I imagine SWAT was like that.  The worst range I've seen is White Shark Arms in Hilo where the owner built his own range.  I was in the shop when the range door opened and a thick cloud of smoke came out.  I pass on shooting there.

The Bellevue range was the worst case of lead poisoning at a gun range in recent history where range employees and construction workers got really sick from lead poisoning due to poor range maintenance and not using protective equipment.  http://projects.seattletimes.com/2014/loaded-with-lead/2/

If a few stray ammo rounds and powder residue constitutes an IED, then most of our homes must be "WMD's".

I do not own any firearms, ammo, nor any reloading components...

That's alarming. In my experience, the owner has his side of the story, the workers have their side of the story, and the truth is somewhere in between. This was probably resolved in the confidential settlement trial. The likely sources of lead exposure was from breaking apart the berm to mine the lead and removal of the insulation. Makes me wonder about KHSC which is what, 50 years old. Do the C&C landscapers wear any respiratory/clothing protection when they mow the grass with mowers and weedeaters? Do they change their work clothes before going home?

I don't know about that, they should get proper training and wear filters and suits when doing that downrange.  I believe the construction workers were in full suits when they repaired the backstop when they shutdown the range for a month years ago.

Wow! I used to shoot pretty often at Wade’s in Bellevue. That’s where I bought my first handgun. Probably went 1-2 times a week. That was around 2000 or so. They were already a pretty big range.

I hear you, all those educational liberal articles convinced me they are too dangerous to be left on their own.

I never went to Wades, but there was a state of the art, filtered air range in Factoria( which is a part of Bellevue).  Everything you read in the
Seattle times should be treated like fake news.  In WA I did most my shooting in my back yard.  I had a 200yd range and a trap throwing machine.
People here in Hawaii would not know about freedoms like that.

In case anyone's wondering about the difference between Bellevue and Factoria.

Updates on the hazmat at the former SWAT gun range.  Looks like the land owner is responsible for the lead cleanup and the owners of SWAT must've bugged out.  Probably a half million dollar cleanup.  This could mean it'll be harder to build ranges on leased land and buildings in the future.  Owners will be wary of people building a range and leaving hazardous waste behind when they shutdown.

Also one of the hazards if you plan on shooting on your own property.  Gotta clean up the lead if you sell the property.

Lead abatement could complicate gun club site redevelopment

If you think anymore gun ranges will be built on this island then I have some ocean front land in Arizona I will sell you.

Simple solution.  :geekdanc:
Turn it back into a firing range.

If this is true, that means California has fallen into the ocean. My wish has come true!
