Don't assume the person who called was on the pro-gun side.
The Left/Liberal/Progressive/Socialist types have a track record of perpetrating these kinds of actions to cast their opposition in a bad light.
Democrat campaign headquarters have been firebombed.
Black churches burned down.
Churches, synagogues and homes spray painted with racist threats or slogans opposing Democrats.
Muslim individuals saying they were targets of racist attacks by white supremacists.
The list goes on. Many cases were proven to be the act of the very people being "victimized."
I could easily see Hogg having his own family SWATTED to get more press time and more sympathy.
So, before disparaging "our side" for this prank, you might want to withhold judgement and wait for more facts.

to clarify, in the cbs news story link, he did not appear on camera. They talked to him on the phone.
The pictures were old footage.
It may have been a publicity stunt, but we'll never know for sure unless there is a thorough investigation which is unlikely.
