Title: FINALLY GOT A 22
Post by: changemyoil66 on July 30, 2018, 09:09:31 AM
The wife surprised me on Saturday with the Ruger Precision Rimfire.  My 1st 22.

Went to Prime Sports just to hang and they brought it from the back saying it was reserved for me.

Got a scope ready to mount.  Hope it fits.  I'll keep you all posted on how it shoots.

Thanks Toofewpews for the intel and help.

Super noob to the 22 scene, so learning baby steps.  Right now my grouping expectations at 50 yards are tangerine size.

Congratulations!!!

I own 5 rifles and 4 pistols in .22. As a suggestion, develop a process for testing out different ammo. Each .22 is an animal in itself. It will have a distinct like or dislike for each type of ammo you try in it. If you are lucky, it will like some of the less expensive ammo out there. But if not, it should perform brilliantly for you. I tested all my more precise guns and came up with 3 distinct types of ammo to use in each gun. For instance, when I plink over on the silhouette side I use cheaper high velocity ammo (Blazer). This ammo works very well in all my guns that can shoot HV ammo. I also use CCI Standard Velocity in my more precise .22's and my .22's that can only shoot SV ammo for target practice and training. For actual match ammo I use two different types of Eley (Target and Tenex) ammo. This way I only keep 3 or 4 different types of ammo around and only keep larger quantities of the cheaper ammo and smaller quantities of the more expensive stuff.

The basic idea is to just have fun. The nice thing about .22 is you can bring tons of ammo with you and shoot a lot without it being very expensive. Which means a lot of trigger time and practice. I also bring small reactive targets to place out at 50, 75 and 100 yards to have fun with. One of my favs is when it is a windy day to bring out a target frame with plastic easter eggs hanging from it blowing around and put it out at 100 yards. It takes a lot of patience to hit them while they are moving around. Good fun.

Have been wanting a 22 lr rifle for a while.  Was close to getting a Savage bolt action.

Enjoy the new rifle!

Picked up a variety of ammo from SEC yesterday to see which my rifle does the best with.  Only spent about $30 on 400rds.  SOOOOOOOOOOOOO CHEEEEAAAPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP.

Was given a box of the match ammo and asked what the price difference was.  $1 more.

I'm not sure what the difference is with the cheap "match" ammo.  I think it's the same thing as the regular stuff in a different box.

Then there's stuff like this:

If I bought that, it would defeat my purpose for a 22.  I might try 1 box (50rds) just to try.

Where sells this?  I heard about it, but haven't seen it on the shelf yet. (SEC, KM, HFR).

Only snooty shooters shoot that kind of ammo. The kind of shooter that wears skinny jeans, drives a small coupe and comes to the range with a GF that dresses like they just got off the pole.

Mr. Change and Mrs. Change, I have some 22lr match ammo for you to try. Be forewarned, once you see what a 22 can do, you might be full chronic. Tangerine is not problem at 100y much less 50y. Fundamentals is key. You will see a lot of your flaws shooting the weak 22. 9mm and 556 is going to seem cheap compared to 22s.

As a wise old man who wears an orange vest once told me always buy the best!  “Buy once Cry once” But, if you take the road a lot of us has traveled at some point you will go for the golden rifle only to look back and find out how many times you cried once!

Why are you guys still focused on good quality ammo and guns? My thoughts is with the GF that's dressed like she came off a pole. I need to find new shooting friends because I need to see this, especially her shooting prone.

Got to shoot today. 1st time really shooting a 22 and a bolt action.

With CCI SV, rounds were within dollar coin. Armscor HV. High 1 inch, but simular to CCI SV.

All other ammo wasnt "touching" and shot high 1 inch. Seemz like all HV shot high 1 inch. I zeroed with CCI SV.

Still got lots to learn . It was kind of windy at KHSC. Patience was running low, so sometimes i just sent it.

SK reds were even tighter than CCI. Within a quarter.

Mrs wantz her own 22 now. Prime has anothet ruger precision rimfire. But she isnt a fan of bolt action. Might look into a CZ semi. Overall had lots of fun and was super cheap.   auto.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180805/a4e6405cab4cb8aeb8316af4c57f87f2.jpg)

Most opinions seem to indicate each .22 rifle has certain ammo it likes or dislikes.  Not all 22s are created equal.

If you get into building/buying custom precision .22 rifles, then the ammo will perform more consistently.

I buy mostly high velocity, because it cycles my .22 semis more reliably. Once you get a .22 zeroed, you can experiment with other brands/versions, but don't keep adjusting zero for each ammo type.  Find one that shoots consistently well in the gun, and stick with it.

Watched the video that Prime Sports posted and the Ruger Precision Rimfire seems quite interesting. Decent price. Been wanting a Savage bolt action 22 for a while and that one is going for around $260-280, but if I can find the Ruger in the low $400 range, I might for it.

I too mostly buy HV 22 because that’s what functions best in my semi auto 22 pistol. Absolutely hate the Fed Champion blue box. That stuff is crap. Could barely give it away.

Wait until you start shooting more different types of SV, then target, then match ammo. I found myself on a mission at every gun show to find some new .22 to try. And even found some great deals while on those missions. Been addicted for longer than most have been alive.  :shake:

My friend carried back an aluminum double rifle case from Los Angeles to Maui.
United Airlines mashed the case and damaged 2 somewhat rare Remington 552 speedmasters.
We went to Ukumehame range this morning and test fired both of them at 50 yards with CCI mini mags.
The 552 is an impressive piece of work.

Seems like the pricing and availability on 22 ammo has gotten back to "normal", or at least not crazy like how it was a few years ago.

I wish I could add to the experience with the better 22 ammo, but CCI mini-mags ammo is probably the best I've shot.  I've shot some Federal stuff that was about the same price and supposedly performance as the CCI mini-mags, but not like I could really tell with my 4" 22 handgun.   ;D  I do have some cartons of some 22 ammo that have some NASCAR guy on it, but wouldn't expect super good accuracy from that ammo.   :P

The Mini Mags shot 1 inch high (like all HV ammo) for me and the grouping wasn't touching.  Was spread out like a peanut size for 5 rds at 50yrds.  But like everyone says, 22's are like voodoo.  Each rifle has it's own preference.

I forgot to mention that out of the box, I cleaned the barrel and put a light coat of oil.

Grouping was 2 shots same hole with CCI SV.  I was low about 10 inches because my scope wasn't zeroed yet.

==================
That post I wrote was a multipurpose post.
1-united airlines messed up pretty bad. I took pictures for the damage claim but it wasn't my camera. There were holes in the aluminum shell.
2-Mini-mags are pretty decent ammo for the price.
3-Introduce you to the speedmaster. It is the only semiauto that will take shorts, longs and long rifles. That means you can shoot uber quiet ammo without working a bolt.

It's not a cheap gun, but it is very cool. It is still in production.

It has gotten back to somewhat normal for bulk type ammo. But for more specialized, higher end ammo it is still hit and miss depending on the LGS.

Mini Mags and Blazer have always been a go to ammo for me when I am testing functionality of a new semi auto. They both work in just about every gun I have tried them in. Both are fairly consistent. They won't win you any tournaments but they are good value for practice and plinking. And Mini Mags are great for hunting.

That ammo you have with the Nascar guy on may not be super good accurate, but they go REAL FAST!!!

I was reflecting like how I normally do after shooting.

My expectations were tangerine size at 50 yrds.  The rifle has exceeded that.  Now my expectations are between ping pong ball and quarter size at 50 yards with normal ammo.  But more important to me is my POA/POI.

Might go on Saturday to the silly side and depending who shows up bench side and attempt 100yrds.

So, now you've done the ammo thing. Once. Keep in mind that, with every new .22 you acquire, you get to do that again. And you'll find that each gun has preferences, and worse, allergies.

I've got a number of .22s, handgun and rifle, in a variety of actions. I had to keep a cross-indexed list, plus a wide inventory of ammo. If I were taking the Browning to the range, there were a couple of choices that it would fire reliably through it, but not the same choices as the Marlin, which would jam reliably on the same ammo. And while all would operate the S&W, they didn't group well from it. And don't even get me started on the Beretta...

Anyway, after decades of putting up with this, I set out on a quest to find the One Ammo to Feed Them All.

It took two years.

At the end of the day, CCI standard velocity is now all I buy. It operates all of my semis at 95% or better reliability, and it groups decently out of every gun.

One Round to feed them all,
One round to buy,
One round to hit the steel
And make my neighbor cry.
In the land of Kokohead where the silhouettes lie.

I got rid of my semiauto 22's. A 10/22 and a beretta pistol
Now I only have 2 revolvers and a bolt action rifle so all 3 function with any ammo
I found pretty decent groups with federal gold box HV for both firearms. CCI is very good too.
I've never tried any expensive stuff
Both are great fun on the silhouette side.

Maybe we should do a 2A 22 day at kokohead   :shaka:

With the CCI-SV I was either left or right about 3/4 inch POA, but rounds were touching

SK red box were all shots in a nickle size POA, looked like a 4 on a dice. But all edges touching, not on top of each other like CCI/Armscor

Armscor was almost like the CCI,

Everything else in the pic of the ammo was spread out about peanut size compared to POA

But again to be fair, many times I was just sending rounds and not waiting for 100% no wind or stuff like that.  So that might be the 3/4 inch left or right.

Shot at 100yrds for the first time.

CCI minimag grouping and poi/poa was within grapefruit.

Got to try some RWS match and target (thanks Bushido), grouping and poa/poi was within about 40mm (diamater of the front of my scope). Or little bigger than ping pong ball, but smaller than bottom of soda can.

Noticed both head drop was about 4-5 inches  compared to 50yrds.

Took a while to figure out the drop. I went up mil dots at first (wrong way). Had no idea where my rounds were going. Then i tried them all and realized i had to hold down 1 dot for HV and 2 dots for SV ammo.

Took a while to figure out the drop. I went up mil dots at first (wrong way). Had no idea where my rounds were going. Then i tried them all and realized i had to hold down 1 dot for HV and 2 dots for SV ammo.

No problem, as you could see by Nakas coming over and letting me try some Eley and esk808 giving me more R50, the rimfire crowd is about that Aloha. I'm glad you and Mrs. Change had fun. Beware, rimmies are very contagious. 556fun can vouch for that.

Went to clean the RPRR and was amazed how clean the bolt and receiver is.

I guess because no blow back and gas being recycled.

Didnt clean the barrel, gonna leave it "seasoned".

There are a few prevailing thoughts I will share with you.

One is that the barrel will not get any dirtier than it already is. As each bullet passes thru it will push out any excess and just leave the same amount of "seasoning". A lot of people never clean their barrels. A brand new barrel can lead to the point of having accuracy issues. I am under this impression as well. So I would consider cleaning your new barrel every few outings to just check for excessive lead build-up. If there is none then I stop cleaning my barrels.

Another thought is that the "seasoning" is applicable only to the type of ammo you last shot through the barrel. In other words, when changing ammo types with different lube some people shoot 10 or more rounds of the new ammo before they try to shoot for groups or competition. Thereby seasoning the barrel for the type of ammo you intend to shoot. I am not so sure about this. I have actually tested the theory and have found that the first 2-5 shots from a cold barrel affect the accuracy the most. In other words, warming up the barrel. I have not noticed any change in POA/POI or accuracy differences while changing from one type of ammo to another without running 10 or so rounds through the barrel first. As long as the barrel is warm.

I do however clean my barrels occasionally. On all my semi's when the action stops reliably feeding ammo I know it is time to clean my .22's. So far that turns out to be about once every 6 months to a year. As far as my pump/bolt action rifles are concerned I clean them more often. Can't explain why. HEADS
