Title: Pilot program: ordering ammo online & home delivery to Oahu
Post by: KaleoArms on November 23, 2018, 11:38:29 PM
Edited to simplify.

We collect ammunition requests from the 1st to the 7th of odd numbered months (January, March, May, July, September, November).
A list of commonly requested ammunition calibers/brands/bullet grain weights etc is posted online a few days before the pallet request window begins.  Most pallets are typically half from this list and half other requests.  We are happy to quote prices for any ammo not on the posted list.
When the pallet arrives at the port in Honolulu we arrange for local delivery direct to you.
As always, ammunition purchases are limited to persons who are not prohibited by law from purchasing or possessing etc ammunition.  Our in-person delivery system does verify age eligibility.

Will you be expanding ti include other islands?

That's the eventual goal.  The logistic hurdle for the neighbor islands is the final delivery from the port to end purchaser.  We have a network in place to get the ammo from the mainland to the neighbor islands (on a pallet), and we're in the process of finding that last delivery/courier leg.

This trial has logistically so far gone ok.  This trial inadvertently ended up being during the two busiest online shopping and subsequently shipping weeks so the boxes coming across the land to the port are running a couple days behind.  Most arrived at the port yesterday and are waiting for a few straggler boxes that for some reason or another took a different FedEx Ground path to the port.  Currently, the pallet is on track to ship ocean this week, and when it lands 4-5 days later, it will ship UPS ground the same day.

Hello 2aHawaii community,

We are testing a new program that offers Oahu residents internet ordering of ammunition and home/office UPS delivery.   Ammunition ordered on our site (http://www.kaleoarms.com/hawaii-ammunition/) will be delivered to your Oahu address by UPS Ground (adult signature required).

The case will ship free.  The price listed (plus sales tax) is the price to your doorstep.

For this trial session, orders must be submitted by Monday November 26, 2018 @ 9pm HST.
Estimated delivery is the week of December 10, 2018 (could be sooner depending on how the dock is).
Delivery updates will be provided along the way (Overland to Port, At Port, On Ship, Arrived Oahu, Tendered to UPS, and UPS tracking number).

The attached image is a list of the common calibers/brands currently available online.  They are caliber/brands that are either generally popular or were ones that we were asked to quote.  If you are looking for a particular ammunition (caliber or brand etc) that is not listed here, please send a PM, email us at customer.service@kaleoarms.com, or give us a call at 1-800-280-3317.  We will be happy to find/quote the ammo you are looking for to make the sailing.

At this time, we are only doing case quantities.

Would it be possible to get some gun club grade 12 ga target ammo?

No problem!  We are planning another pallet for mid-January to Oahu, and will likely start building that pallet in early January.  Feel free to email us what you're looking for (caliber/brand/type etc) and we'll go from there.  Thanks!

Edit: I got your email (will reply directly to that)

Got mine. :shaka:
besides having to be home to sign for it, i like this convenient setup. Id also be interested in picking it up at the port/storefront/wherever to get it even cheaper and avoid having to be home.
My heavy boxes get smashed by ups half the time and they come anywhere from 2-8pm so picking it up myself would be fine by me.

Evaluating this first pilot, we're thinking of adjusting delivery options.  We went with UPS because their regulations allow intra-Oahu small cartridge delivery (FedEx doesn't), because most people usually trust the established big three of shipping (UPS, FedEx, and USPS) to come to their homes etc, and because UPS has a very good tracking and accountability system.  The adult signature is a hassle for all (and actually an expensive service), but the value of the packages and its contents pretty much necessitated it.

In future pallets, we are leaning towards offering two options for delivery.  Before the first pallet, we looked to see if any there are any courier services that could do the delivery, but several refused because "guns..." and most were just astronomically priced.  So, we are thinking of essentially becoming our own private courier (like how pizza delivery works) and also offer a UPS option as an addon.

Have you looked at Aala Ship Service, (Ship to Hawaii.com)
They are conveniently located at Pier 32 or 33, no credentials to access their facility and they  advertise that they do "hazardous" material.
Well established in the waterfront and local freight community.
Just a suggestion
Aloha

I heard good things about them too.  When I inquired with Ship to Hawaii last month, they said they don't ship ammunition.

Might be worth a visit.
Don't have a name to call but...
They are a big player in the waterfront.
A one on one over lunch may be productive.
Full disclosure... I do not represent them, but have had extensive dealings with them over many years. All Good.
I think that they are interested in making a legal buck

Thanks everyone for helping us test this out.  We really appreciate it and the feedback.  :shaka:

We'll be rolling out a regular ordering schedule starting in April (open for orders the 1st to the 7th of the month w/ final delivery ~2.5 weeks assuming the ship doesn't break down again... /sigh).

The next pallet scheduled to come in is for the March gun show.  We'll be bringing in the usual cast of calibers (9mm, 45acp, 10mm, 40SW, 223, 308, 6.5 Gren, 6.5 CDM, 30-06, 7.62x54R, 762x39, 22LR, 12ga Slugs, and 12ga TGL).

If there are any special calibers/brands/packing anyone was looking for, please feel free to contact us.  We were hoping to have the pallet heading west to the port mid next week, so if we could get any requests by Tuesday 2/12 that would be great.  Sorry for the short notice... mid-February crept up faster than expected  :o

Didn't know where else to review so I figure a bump on this thread might do well for the folks at Kaleo arms.

Ammo at mainland prices and great service? who wouldn't be satisfied?
Ordered 8 cases of ammo and everything arrived in good condition, on time, and delivered to my residence.

Save your dollars, save your time, and give these guys your money.  :shaka:

Thank you for the kind feedback!  We've enjoyed meeting all of you!

April 1, 2019 update: Beginning this month, we have standardized the ordering schedule to collect ammo order requests from the 1st to the 7th of the month. Because transit can take 2.5 weeks and we want to make sure the ammo arrives in good shape, we have switched to an ammo request system rather than requiring/taking full payment upon ordering.  Also we don't have a minimum box, case, or dollar amount.

Sometimes ammo availability and prices fluctuate so every month we will post a price list that has the common calibers and brands we've seen requested by Hawaii.  The April 2019 pallet list is attached and posted at https://documentcloud.adobe.com/link/track?uri=urn%3Aaaid%3Ascds%3AUS%3A910f8a93-19b7-413b-8bed-ca28563c117b  The list has the common calibers and brands we've seen requested by Hawaii, but we are able to get others not listed. If you are looking for a particular ammunition (caliber or brand etc) that is not listed, please contact us at http://www.kaleoarms.com/contact-us/, email us at customer.service@kaleoarms.com, or give us a call at 1-800-280-3317.  We will be happy to find/quote the ammo you are looking for to make the sailing.

When we verify that the ammo arrived in Hawaii and arrived in good shape, we will email an invoice that has a checkout link and arrange a delivery time that is convenient for you.  This link will allow you to process payment online. Please feel free to contact us with any questions.

Can't believe its May already....  Its been great meeting everyone!

Updating the post with the May pricing sheet.  Vast majority of the prices stayed the same from April (45acp SB was the one that increased), and some brands/gr weights came back in stock so those were updated.

The May Pallet will take requests/orders through May 7 and is estimated to be ready for final delivery on Oahu around May 20.

Updating price attachment for July.  Pallet cut off July 7, and anticipated ready for local delivery around July 24/25.

Also, is there a way to move this thread to maybe the classifies or a vendor page? (not sure who to ask)

The list has the calibers/brands/bullets that we have seen commonly requested, but it no problem at all to quote out anything not on that list.  If its easier, you can email us customer.service@kaleoarms.com (or PM) and we'll get to looking.  Was there a brand you prefer or the cheapest round?  We've been trying to bring ammo choice to Hawaii so people have a way to bring in/get any ammo they want.

They’ve come through for me a few time already. Finding calibers that just weren’t available locally as well as specific ammo weight and grain combos. All for good prices. They are awesome.

in addition to caliber, brand, it helps if you express your preference for bullet type (e.g. FMJ, flat nose), and bullet weight (e.g 180gr).  That helps them narrow it down a little.

sorta like "make, model, year".

in addition to what everyone else said, you could also specify that you don't really care about a specific brand/type of ammo and that you're just looking for the cheapest brass cased 40 S&W you can get your hands on.

for some people, they can be kind of picky as to what they run through their pews.  for me, i'm usually ok with running the cheapest stuff i can find (so long as it is decently reliable).

Last time I ordered I think they mentioned that one of them got into a class or training (or something else) that would take them to the mainland for a while.  That they were still going to be facilitating orders, but just not as often.  So hopefully they are just busy.  In the past, they emailed me back pretty quick.  Hope they are still offering this as I was going to put in an order.

We're still around.... just freezing in North Dakota.  To retain an adjunct/professor position in the UH system, a PhD was needed so we'll be on the mainland for a bit.  We come back every other month for the pallets (and to eat rice).  The blizzard that took out the Midwest Thanksgiving weekend, and the end of semester student emails about their grades/papers clogged emails up for a bit.  Cleared that backlog today, and all emails should have gotten a reply today.  If not, please PM us (in case something weird is going on with our email systems).

I couldn't find your emails though, ChiefJoe.  I looked through the trash and junk folders too  :(  The contact form on the Kaleo Hawaii ammunition will get the message to us or the address is customer.service@kaleoarms.com.  If neither of those gets a response within a day or two, the PM notification on 2a will also get to us at that same address.  The only email delay we anticipate in the near future is in March depending on when the baby comes, but other than that (and any blizzards) we should be at normal operations.

The January pallet list should be up a little before new years.  The requests for that pallet will until Jan 8, and it should be ready for local delivery the last week of January (Shot show is the week before).

I haven't heard of any new developments aside from their website that explained that due to the virus and increased sales in ammunition that they had to modify their procedures.

The June pallet shipment had very little options due to shortages.  I wanted to buy 5.56/.223 and .44 special cowboy and self defense loads but they didn't have any.

They did have Aguila .22 LR copper plated 40 gr. high velocity rounds.  They had 20 boxes left and I bought 10 ( 1 full case of 5000)

Their website mentioned that the odd number months will be postponed and they will go on a month to month basis.  They hoped that by August or September they will have a better idea of conditions.

I keep checking their website every now and then.

We're waiting on inventory to see when the next pallet will go out.  We're aiming for later August or September, but its dependent on when (if?) 223/556, 9mm, and non-match 22LR comes back in.  2/3 of the pallet is usually 223/556 and 9mm so we're dependent on those restocking.  From mid-March there has been at least some sprinkling of inventory coming back in regularly, but it has been a couple of weeks of no-restocking.  There are some oddball Lapua rifle and SK 22LR still in stock, but all the range or plinking price range ammo is hard to come by.  Supposedly the big manufactures (Federal etc) have been pumping out rounds, but they don't seem to have hit the market yet.  Some of the wholesaler distributors also supply their own retail locations (for example, Crow Shooting Supply is the same company as Brownells and Countrywide Sports is the same as Outdoor Limited) and those combo companies seem to be diverting inventory to their retail operations instead of restocking the wholesale side.  Can't really blame them for doing so because they probably make a lot more profit selling retail.

....
44 special is not a common caliber. Better learn how to make your own.

I should.  Would be cheaper I suppose.   ;D

Thank you for the update.  I recently did business with you and it was a very positive experience.  I look forward to doing business with you again.

Hope things stabilize soon.  Seems a lot of people like and appreciate what you do.

Do you bring in  powder?

Not quite yet.  Powder is a different hazmat class than ammo so we're checking with the overland and overwater transportation companies to see what would change if we did start bringing powder and primers with the ammo.  Final mile is also a challenge because of the zoning and fire codes and vehicle transportation rules depending on the total weight being transported.  ...Totally unregulated industry though right HI Leg? ???...

I have ordered ammo on both of the last 2 pallets. Kaleo Arms are solid people. I highly recommend them. They are awesome at communication, and are very helpful in trying to fulfill your ammo needs. I will definitely be doing more business in the future when I need ammo again.

Can we make a special request for weird little calibers? Makarov prices on the mainland always seem half

Oh yes, that's no problem.   Its kind of like a treasure hunt of sorts, and its been pretty neat to learn about all the different calibers that HI has.  Before covid's 223 and 9mm push, about 1/3 of each pallet were oddball calibers or brands etc. Actually about a year ago we brought in a half case of Makarov on one of the pallets.

Oddball calibers have become the dark horse of ammo inventory lately.  With most of the "common calibers" sold out, some of the distributors have been turning to the oddballs to fill their email ads etc.  The possible downside though with the manufacturers focusing on replenishing the more common calibers, it might be a while before the less common ones are slated for production again.

9 mm and 5.56/.223 are always on my "list" to buy.  I actually still have most of the .41 mag ammo that you brought in for me a while back.  Maybe I need to starting shooting that gun more.

Hope you're doing well!  Looking forward to updates on ammo shipments.

I also am always interested in purchasing 5.56 ammunition.  I also am willing to purchase .22LR.

I'm hoping that in the future pallets you would be able to bring in .44 special "cowboy loads".

I'm looking forward to the next pallet shipment!

Update August 9, 2020: Because of the nationwide shortage of 223/556 and 9mm, we will not have an August pallet.  At this point, a September pallet is also unlikely.  We will post updates to this page, 2aHawaii, and reply to all inquiry emails sent since the last pallet if the situation changes.
