Could someone point me to any stores in the town or central area that sell 20 rd boxes of cheap Wolf /Tula 5.56 - 223 soft points. I don’t need a whole case
DCT doesn’t have per website
OGC - likely have, I hope they sell by box. I’ll call them
One of my friends wants to try pig hunting with me and I’ll be loaning him a rifle.

Last time I saw Tula .223 was at Young Guns.
For .223, there are plenty of choices besides Tula and Wolf. Why limit yourself to those two?

I’m thinking that for short ranges < 75yards, the cheap stuff will do for pigs
I could be wrong. What 5.56/223 is favored for pig hunting and will it make much of a difference at < 75 yards?
I’m planning to use 7.62x39. The 5.56 is for friends.

Specific hog hunting rounds are preferred, but lots of guys claim to take hogs with cheap, conventional ammo in these calibers; many claim even with fmj.
Shot placement is key. I'm switching to neck shots, as this provides an almost identical surface area as a broadside/quartering shot at the vitals. most guys ive spoken to over the past 2 weeks utilize neck shots as their primary targets because it drops them instantaneously quite consistently.
I think the emphasis on heart/lung shots is carry-over from bow hunting, as an arrow generally does not have the ability to penetrate and damage other target areas that a bullet can; i.e. the spine with a neck shot. Possible, but not as successful and consistent as with a bullet.

I see. FWIW, I've shot Tula quite a bit. The problems I had with the ammo was due to reliable function in my guns, but I was guessing that was more of a lower power ammo vs uppers that were intended for full 5.56 pressure ammo. If I recall correctly, both the 55 gr and 62 gr versions shot pretty well at 50 and 100 yards.
I understand the thinking of folks not wanting to spend more $$$ than they had to, but if around $5 more for a box of ammo is the potential difference between a successful hunt and not. . . I'd offer up some ammo for you, but not sure when I'll be headed to the range again.

I'm not a fan of Wolf steel case. It's so dirty. 30 rds Wolf is like shooting 500 rds brass. And Wolf had to scrub harder than normal. (Balistol used). But I had no FTF or FTE issues. So it's reliable, just dirty.
For Tula steel case, I read reviews from many sites that sell them and many report the base being ripped off and the case stuck in the barrel. So to me not worth it to save a few dollars. And since you're not going to use them for range shooting (as in buying a case), might as well buy any other brass type of ammo. You probably only need 1-2 boxes worth.

Drck - thanks for the offer but I’m ok. I have 60 rounds of commercial 5.56 available (I also have 600 SP bullets but I’m just too lazy to reload)
I hear what your saying about running under powered ammo thru upper tier guns that that were meant to run full powered ammo. I have 2 bcm uppers and sold off 2 other bcm uppers. I’ve never ran the cheap stuff thru the bcms
I’ve only ran cheap stuff thru my ak 47 and never had an issue.
The 5.56 for hunting is a PSA. PSA uppers are generally known for having larger than mil spec gas ports so I hope it runs reliably with the under powered ammo.

It's not really about top tier guns. I have found that Tula hasn't worked that well with many midlength gas guns. I bought a PSA carbine upper many years back with the intention of testing and shooting with Tula and other underpowered ammo. The theory was that with the PSA uppers, which were known to be overgassed (like you mentioned), would eat up the cheap Tula. Then the pricing and availability of Tula went south. At one point, I couldn't find Tula. Then when it was in stock, it was the same price as 193. :(
For AKs, I've also only shot cheap stuff. In fact, at one of the SSFs, we were having more problems with the brass cased 7.62x39 ammo whereas the steel ran great!

AK's are built to run on shitty ammo. The more crappy the ammo is, the better the AK runs. Like putting premium gas in a Saturn. Just runs funny.

Drck - I usually help at the SSF but I just take the customer’s orders and collect scrip....or fill mags

Within 75 yards & right conditions l’ll take a head shot. But then that’s with my .308. Within 75 yards a head shot with any bullet from 5.56/223 will drop them.
