It’s coupon day at Foodland!

I like the old days when I bought my first rifle at age 16. It has a 7mm Mauser from Klein's Sporting Goods for $11. Mail order to my home by USPS. No permit, no registration, no background checks. I already had a .303 Lee Enfield and a 16 gauge shotgun, but those were given to me when I was 15. I did have to lie by checking the box on the mail order form that I was at least 18 years old. LOL

If it's easy for you to get one it's also easy for a criminal, asshole, psychotic, etc to get one as well. Sorry them's just the facts.
Also the government doesn't do a very good job of picking out which Ralphies are most likely to shoot their eyes out.
The approach I like best is similar to NZ or other European countries where you have to join a "club", but instead of hunting-only club or target-shooting club we would call our clubs Militias to make the progressive 2a re-interpreters STFU.
Every Militia could be more or less exclusive with their memberships, but if one of the members goes on a killing spree then the militia loses their charter and the members have to join up with another group (providing they haven't burned their bridges). More important will be the permanent stain on the honor of the group and former members. This will cause people to evaluate each other very carefully and weed out those who should not be trusted.
But then in exchange for this system we eventually get access to whatever we want/can afford all the way up to belt-fed and possibly beyond, as well as mandatory two extra weeks off our jobs during the year for training purposes so we can hone our skills in a group environment and spend significant amounts of time with people we are supposed to be watching for signs of inappropriate behavior.
I'm sure the insurance companies will have a heyday with this, but it's probably cheaper for the govt to subsidize militia policies than maintain the fiscal nightmare of a the world's most expensive standing army with billions falling through the cracks of a Pentagon that can't even complete an audit

Is the law in NZ similar to the UK where all the guns have to be kept in a safe at the club? If so I don’t think I would like that. If not, then maybe okay.

When I lived in SoCal I remember when I was very young being with my father when he bought some guns from a store. There was a local hardware store that carried guns. He walked in picked one out, paid his money and walked out with the gun. He only bought pistols. He bought guns from gun stores as well as gun shows. I remember him meeting people in parking lots and buying guns out of someone’s trunk. He sold guns like that as well.
When I was 18 I started buying my own guns. By that time we had the 2 week waiting period for pistols. Not rifles/shotguns. Eventually, the two week waiting period applied to all guns. Then I remember having to take a gun safety test to get a certificate to buy a gun. It was good for a year. Then I remember having to take a class to get the certification. I stopped buying guns at that time. Eventually, registration took hold. >:(

I thought this might be a serious discussion... guess not.

There was a time when I would be in favor of zero restrictions.
Sadly, I see and hear about a lot of stupid irresponsible gun handling nowadays.
The internet seems to propagate stupid gun behavior too.
Like any thing else in this world it just takes a few bad apples.......

If instant background checks actually worked the way they are supposed to I would be in favor of them. If the 2 week waiting period prevented more shootings I would be in favor of them. But sadly, I see data that more victims are shot while waiting for the 2 weeks. If gun registration and other controls actually did work I would be in favor of them.
Like you said, you cannot fix stupid. I just wish we would go back to punishing those who commit crimes appropriately. It won’t stop everyone from doing bad things, but it will reduce it.

I am actually ok with going through instant background checks, but like you said, I don't really see that measure preventing those who shouldn't have guns from getting them. Another case of a law/measure only affecting those who follow the law. I mean I do see the NICS check preventing some folks, but seems like many who get "caught" by that have something that was left uncleared. That or those generally unaware that they had something that disqualified them. I wish there were some studies on that, but understand that even if there were, folks would doubt the results, but to me would be interesting.
For those who are bent on doing harm, they are going to find a way. Firearm or not. Nothing new here. Yeah, there are going to be lawful gun owners who use their firearms for harm. But I don't see any (or at least most proposed) laws preventing what they think they are. They are all attempts to "feel" safer. Even an outright ban on guns won't solve things.

The waiting period makes absolutely no sense if you already own a gun of any type.

Since when does "makes absolutely no sense" enter into the rationale for infringing laws proposed by the anti-civil rights civilian disarmament advocates?

It should be as easy as driving up to the window at McDonalds and ordering a Big Mac!

I say two guns. After all you only have two hands so you can't shoot more than two at once!
-
Buying a gun should be no more different than buying a tool
at Lowes or Home depot.
It is a tool.
I've had these tools since age 8.
I've also had slingshots, Bow and arrows, and air rifles.
I've fed my family using these tools.
It is the behavior that needs to be controlled
not the tool.
More accurately it is the politicians that need to
be controlled, and have a waiting period
as they are the biggest threat to all
of us.

Hawaii should be easier but I think there are places that should be harder too.

Actually it should be only 1, unless you take a class that specializes in support side. Need to show proof you can handle with weak hand.

Even with one per hand, you can only fire one at a time while taking any sort of aim at the intended target/s. Two would, however, double the amount of ammo you can use before reloading, assuming both have the max, legal amount loaded.
Maybe we need 5 rd mag limits for anyone owning 2+ handguns ..... 10 rds are SOOOOOO much safer.

Don't give our fascist Hawaii government any ideas. Next will be a total of 10rds limited per gun (1 mag). Since many can reload in under a second.

They don't need to look here for suggestions. They have all they can use from the Bloomberg, et al. phalanx of lawyers who push the same bills all over the country. In just a couple weeks we'll be finding out what they have in store for us to "promote public safety" with their "commonsense gun safety regulations". I can hardly wait.

I was kidding.
I always point out that we only have two hands to the people who complain about why one guy can own 20 or 30 guns to illustrate why having dozens doesn't make someone any more dangerous than having 2.

I want to say there should be no restrictions and that you should be able to buy one over the counter, but it's difficult to set asside thoughts of wanting some restrictions so criminals can't get them. Most criminals get their guns illegally through burglaries and the black market so it requires effort for them to do so versus just buying one from the store. Black market guns typically sell for 300 to 500% the cost at retail and there is a limited supply. I'd like to see the stats on how illegal guns are acquired like through burgs, straw purchases, private transactions, etc.
I think instant background check system is good since it's very fast and unobtrusive as long as there is no tracking. There should be a quick method of appealing rejections. It could be opened up to private transactions too where the seller just calls a number to check with enforcement being if it's later found to be used in a crime and you didn't do the check or ignored a rejection, then you're liable.
Guns should be able to be bought across state lines. I'm for the legalizing the manufacture of full auto rifles and removing restrictions on suppressors.

Based on a study (interviews with criminals in prison), 80% of firearms used in crimes are obtained through "known acquaintances", such as friends, family and gang members. They are reluctant to trust a stranger, as it could be a police sting or the seller might point police to the buyer if he's arrested.
The assumption that guns in the hands of criminals were stolen or sold on Craig's List by legal buyers is not the norm. In fact, the study found the average age of guns used for crimes is 15 years and passed through many hands. Nobody wants to keep a gun tied to a crime for very long.

I think if we are honest we have to admit that there are certain people who should not be legally allowed to own firearms and because of that I do agree there needs to be some restrictions. Guns are obtained through all manner of means, some stolen, some through straw purchases, and some legally purchased. Each aspect of the problem would require a different solution. I think where liberals do have a point when they talk about the "gun show loophole" is that it does represent an unknown transaction that is difficult to trace for study purposes. Maybe the criminal caught with the gun got it from an acquaintance but beyond that we don't know how many times that gun might have changed hands, legally or not.
There needs to be some level of regulation for private sales and I think we have talked about my idea for that which could even avoid registration. I split ways with you on the full auto though.
