I recently picked up an AR and i want to get the barrel thread to add a compensator. Are there any good shops on the outer island? Anyone from maui have any feed back on Hakes barrel works? Or are there any other gunsmiths on island that are capable of doing the task? Thanks in advance.......

Might be cheaper to change the barrel.
Too bad we on Oahu
-
Well this isnt a normal barrel i should say, its for a 50 beowulf.
-
And for me getting the gun to oahu isnt a problem, i working at the airport.

Let me know what you need done exactly.
The comp you get needs to have the proper exit hole diameter. It would have to have a 3/4 threading. Or maybe a 11/16" threading.
5/8-24 is not going to have too much meat for threading.
We could always make you a custom comp..

I second Speed's advice, replace the barrel with one already threaded and sell your current one to someone in California. But if you're insistent about getting your current barrel threaded...send just the barrel or the upper assembly (if you don't know how to remove the barrel). This will eliminate possible issues over shipping your complete rifle.
As an alternative, you might check with some machine shops in your area. Just find the specs online then ask around. Ideally, you'd want a gunsmith doing it, but I had a couple of 16" AR barrels and my Mini-14 done for $20/each this way.

Hakes did a trigger job on a .308 of mine... job was okay...
internal magazine never werked the same after... took it on a hunting trip to Lanai and keep jamming...
Took it apart and he put the damn spring/clip in backwards... :wtf:
Thats the last it went...
Had other stuff done that was okay though...
This was many years ago. Nothing recently.
Heard the guy on Molokai is good...

50 Beowulf is a tough cookie.not many options out there.
-
If you go to the Alexander & Arms website they got a muzzle break for non threaded barrels...it's the same break I want to put on my Beowulf upper

I would strongly suggest ADCO (http://www.adcofirearms.com/ (http://www.adcofirearms.com/)).
I called Wayne last year and he seemed very disorganized, quoted me a higher price then what I'd pay after shipping to ADCO, and told me it would take two months.

I can see what you mean, but after having met him (Wayne) in person when I stopped by his little shop it's him and him alone running things. So sure he may have come across as disorganized in your experience but maybe he's so good at what he does he just doesn't have the "Customer Service" or "Salesman" mentality. The work he has done for me in the past, well there's no complaints from my end to include the abundance of people who vouch for him and stand by his craft. In my eyes his work speaks for himself.
Sure maybe the prices can come down a bit, but from what I learned this is what he does after hours from his fulltime job. Heck I was able to drop stuff off at his shop today (Sunday) as he was working there. He quoted me 2 months as well but there's a possibility it'll be done before that.
Either way an ideal situation here would be for the ultimate Gun Shop/Gun Smith combo on island. I know OGC has referred work to Wayne, hence why I learned about him but anyways that's just wishful thinking.

2 months!
I'm looking to cut down / re thread my FAL barrel and was hoping to see more options on island...........
Oh well, another job off to CONUS

Would you trust glue and a set screw? idk about this one?
-
I have never seen a glue handle heat. If in the long run always gets brittle. I would feel safer pinning it. That can easily be done on the mill

Wayne is very good at what he does and I don't see why he can't weld up the brake. Best thing is to talk to him though as I'm unsure as to his work load................and yes his shop is teeny tiny, but his work is outstanding.

k. pretty sure I was standing next to you when you bought it LOL... You handed it to me to check out!

Send it to Rainier arms. $55 + shipping, 5 to 7 day turn around and highly recommended on the west coast. Wayne is way over priced, he wants $150 to cut and thread on a stripped barrel, more if he has to do the stripping and a two month wait, that's a little ridiculous . Marvin PITTS wants $75 for this work and he's a F**kin master. (former KAC Gunsmith) and Ken Elmore (also a badass and considered the colt master) only wants $95. These dudes do this shit day in and day out.

And a week and a half later he is finished with my barrel and action.

Does anyone know what happened to Gem Esteban?

He went big time. Only manufacturing and selling now. No time for us Hawaiians.
