I've tried to make that argument with the "ban the AR-15" nuts many times.  I use the shooting at the theater in Aurora, CO, as evidence. The number of fatalities and severity of wounds were at a much better "per rounds fired" rate for the shotgun he used versus the AR-15 that jammed early on.  The details are in the Wikipedia page on that event, showing even with a 100 rd mag, more rounds rapidly fired doesn't always equal more deaths.

I also use the VA Tech shooting as evidence that banning one weapon type, regardless of frequency of use, won't make anyone safer.  Until the Orlando night club shooting, VA Tech had the highest fatality rate of any mass shooting in the US.  He used a Glock 9mm and Walther 22LR handgun.

My theory is most shooters aren't well trained.  Those using handguns will be very close to their target, 5 to 10 yards, allowing them to fire multiple times and hit lethal areas.  They can conceal the handgun and get close to their target.

Rifles are the opposite and criminals will be more confident taking longer distance shots but due to poor training and difficulty shooting standing or while moving, aren't precise or accurate so will get random hits.

I remember recent news articles about trauma nurses saying that handgun wounds are more survivable than AR-15 wounds which is why the assault rifles should be banned. SMH

Don't forget that the doctors association are anti 2a.  I guess getting shot in the head with a 223 or 45 has different outcomes.

Wasn't the 2017 stat for hammer deaths like 600 something and ALL rifle combined deaths 380 (includes 72 from Vegas).
