Was pretty painless, except for needing to pay $40 for my last 8 year renewal. I will be over 72 when this one expires and have to get 2 year renewals. Didn’t have to take the eye test. Gave them a letter from my eye doctor which said my eyes were examined on Nov 30 and I had 20-20 right and 20-30 left and visual field was unrestricted and no glasses or contacts were needed. I went to the Pahoa DMV, uncrowded over there and no appointment needed. When my friend on Oahu got his Lic renewed couple months ago, he had to make an appointment and they were booked 6 weeks out.

Yeah, Oahu has too many people.

Plus their eye test machines don't work well. I have glasses but they're new.
-
Having to make an appointment actually made the process worse

Getting a letter from your eye doctor saves a lot of time, plus those machines are not cleaned every time the next person goes on it like they do in the doctor office.

Why is that". My friend thought it was ok, except for the fact that he had to go back 6 weeks later. He went to the HiKai satellite city hall. Been there a few times. They like to hassle you there. I miss the one they closed in Kailua. Well the point is moot, since I live on the Big Island now where the clerks seem to be much more accommodating, probably because of less stress.

I have to renew my license this year. I still have a few months, but I'll likely do it well ahead of time. I work near a satellite office, so I can go whenevers.

Up until they made the appointment process, I could walk into hi kai city hall at any time and be done in 20 minutes. Now the wait is weeks or months bc my time off is limited. They have walk ins available but the wait is much longer. People make multiple appointments and clog up the waiting list and then no show for the ones they can't make

Funny story...
Last year I went together with my oldest son because we're born in December.
I passed my eye test but my son had such a hard time the girl behind the machine had to coach him into the right answers.
Afterwards, I said, "I'm driving home".

On Oahu, I made an appointment. They were behind schedule by about 12 mins. But once I got to the window, I was done in 10 mins. But like the above said, appointments booked at least 6 weeks out. So don't wait last minute.

Went online to get reservation at Pearlridge Sat City Hall. Next opening was mid March! :(

Hope your lic doesn't expire before then. When I lived on Oahu, I had a CDL, so I had to renew at the CDL office by the stadium. Most I ever saw in line there was two. Just walk ins, no appt.

Nah. I have over a month beyond that window. I'm actually ok with the walkins as well. Just have to be selective on which days. I know avoid Mondays and Fridays and around lunch time.

Don't forget if anyone is traveling, need the gold star by 2020 or can't board airplane. So need a new license even if yours isn't expiring. Can use passport also.
And now the state will only either issue a state ID or license. Can't have both anymore. So you can't get a state ID with the gold star and hold a license.

I got the notifications, have to do it by June. Looking at all the requirements is rather confusing. It requires proof of residence but I send everything to my PO Box. At least my electric bill and water bill say my actually address but for my wife this will be worse because all the bills are in my name, not hers so she has a harder time finding anything that proves her residence.
Does anyone know whether your old driver's license counts as one of the two required forms of ID?
-
An unexpired DL or state Id does count. I just gave them my DL and Direct TV bill which showed the service address as we have no mail service here, just PO Box. She can use a current car reg too if her name is on it. If you own a home and her name is on the deed, use the last property assessment or otherwise show your home rental contract, as long as her name is on it.

I did have some troubles when I updated my license when I moved. The satellite city halls refused to put PO Boxes and I had to go to a DMV where they did recognize the rule that PO Boxes are allowed. You are allowed to put a PO Box on, don't let them tell you that you can't.
