Post by: 808q50 on January 13, 2019, 11:48:44 AM
Where else can I get a large gun safe? I’ve tried Costco and Lowe’s.

+1 SECURITY EQUIPMENT.

Costco online might be an option. I know they ship appliances for reasonable prices. There's a big safe in Costco kapolei that says to order it online.

I see them at Del's Tractor Supply in Hilo.  I am going there on Tuesday and will check the price and brand.  Is the ones at Costco and Lowes no good?

No safe is 100% proof to a motivated individual.  It's just a deterrent or buys some time till HPD shows up.  That's why layers of security are just as important.

Say they see the safe this time and don't touch it.  They might come back with more tools/guys to open/steal it.

All i got to say is i rather have 1/2in steel with more then 3 blots holding the door

Think of the safe as a gun  buy once cry once
You wouldn’t buy the cheapest guns to protect your family because it was cheap

Buy the best safe you can afford.   SEC on Oahu has safes, when not sold out.

A coworker who’s brother in-law is a Officer, said the criminals are now carrying with them a plasma cutter to open safes.  These are targeted home crackheads know guns are there. >:(

In the video, they didn't appear to have similar lock bars in place. Can't imagine opening without a plasma cutter. Anything combustible inside might be toast (literally). This is the $800 version they have on costco.com. Don't forget to bolt it down. Probably easier for the perps to use an appliance hand truck and try to open it at their home.

That's why layers of security are important.  Camera motion sensors in the room the safe is in (WYZE Camera cost about $25).  Motion and door open alert sensor inside the safe (SafElert/Elertus cost about $100).

So dude walks into you room with the safe in it and you know no one is home, motion camera alerts your cell phone.  Layer 1.  Just in case you missed that alarm, criminal trying to pry safe open, motion sensor inside safe alerts you via cell phone. Layer 2.  Criminal takes only a few minutes to open the safe, door open alert notifies your cell phone. Layer 3.

Also in the motion sensor inside the safe, it can go off every 12 seconds or so from repeated banging/prying.  So that's a clue someone is trying to open the door.

So for about $125 more, you can feel a little more at ease.

Layer #1 should be a perimeter alarm system to let you know your house or apartment just got broken into. You can't assume a burglar is after the guns in the safe. Most are looking for cash, credit cards, and anything small enough to shove in a pocket and sell for drug money like jewelry.  If you leave your passport, expired IDs and banking/mortgage/rental papers accessible, those can be taken and used to steal your identity & bank balances.

As such, IF the motion camera picks up the burglar walking past, you'll have a chance of being alerted.

However, all the extra layers you listed are dependent on a working internet connection. If you get an alarm system like SimplySafe, it has a built-in cell connection that can alert you (& your monitoring center if you subscribe).  That way, if the crooks are smart enough to disable your Internet connection by cutting Cable and Telephone lines, the primary alarm system still functions.  The monitors can also call 911.  You might not get the alerts if your phone isn't charged, if you had to turn it off for a meeting or visiting a secure location ... whatever else. Murphy will make sure the ONE TIME your phone isn't getting the alert is exactly when the break in happens.   :geekdanc:

Redundancy and back-up measures are the best way to ensure your home is protected.

I have more layers, but I don't want to mention.  The stuff I did mention, I have already mentioned them before.

Need to add a "trunk monkey".  Or cause we in Hawaii Rent-a-Sole.  Can't find the hilarious youtube vid I saw.  Same concept as trunk monkey.

Del's in Hilo no longer carrying gun safes.
That is because we have turned in all our guns to the police, as 911 will protect us,
no longer hunt as that is barbaric, and they sold crap safes.
Old man Del is spinning in his grave!

i bought a pretty large one second hand, 40-50 long gun safe, not sure.  the guy i got it from sent it from the mainland. that's pretty much the only way you're getting something bigger than that 14 gun safe or whatever that costco and whoever else is selling
