Do any of you gentlefolks have any experience with 7.62x39 drum mags for AK's? I've got a Arsenal SAM7R that I would love to put a drum mag on. I'm not planning on doing any combat rolls or anything crazy, just looking for something that will last and is reliable.

What's the rifle mag capacity limit? Could you please cite the HRS? Thanks. :shaka:

Guys guys guys! C’mon. It’ll be for out of state anyway. I’ll be using it for the 2019 Northwoods Watermelon Hunt. If you run into a sow watermelon with a vine of her blossoms she’ll do anything to protect her babies. This drum magazine NEEDS to be reliable. It’s literally life and dearh.

I saw drum mags at KGS a couple years ago. I haven't been to the store or any Oahu gun stores for well over a year since I live on the BI. I do check out the AZ and NV gun shops whenever I am there. I am going to NV next week Wed. PM me if you want me to check there for you.

Acquisition isn’t really a problem. I’m just trying to make sure I don’t get a lemon. I’ve read a lot of horror stories about the Korean ones being jam-o-matics but people who have good experiences don’t seem to post about it on the internet. (They’re probably busy having too much fun never running out of ammo while lighting up a entire pallet of 2 liter Sam’s Choice sodas.)
Maybe they all suck? I have no idea. That’s why I’m asking.

Give Daniel at KGS a call. He is kind of abrupt at times but he will give you the straight scoop.

Daniel can be intense, but the man certainly knows his business.

In order of quality

Promag
(not going to even link it - lawn mower grade quality)
I had a Romanian one for an AK I built (and left) back in Oregon. It would get through about 10 rounds before a FTF. I'd not want to count on it for anything other than range day

HRS 134-8

Ran a Bulgarian circle 10 drum mag with no problems. Watch some videos on the crank keys, as that could cause FTF without enough tension on the spring. 8-10 full rotations of key usually works for me.

Because there are AK pistols, a detachable drum is illegal, as it can fit those platforms. If you make your "assault pistol" Hawaii legal by fixing the magazine permanently to the recover, it is not illegal.
This statute is why most online shops won't sell magazines to Hawaii residents anymore. Rumor has it (according to a distributor that no longer sells magazines over 15 rounds to Hawaii) that hpd was calling these businesses and threatening informing them about the law.
Is that "15" a typo? HRS 134-8 that you cite says "ten rounds".
I've seen 30 round mags for 5.56/.223 for sale at several gun stores (including a giant cardboard box of used ones). Those would be illegal since they could be used (not permanently fixed) in an AR-platform pistol. What's the story? Is there any receiver that accepts magazines with capacity over 10 rounds that CAN'T be fabricated into a pistol?

Interesting how the law states pistol.
Then defines what a pistol is, what an assault pistol (SBR) is, a rifle, etc...
And how the AWBs proposed crossed out thr word pistol and replaced it with the word firearm.

There are 30 round glock mags at my LGS. When I asked about them he only sells them to "people using them for rifles" That's what he told the police too when they asked about them as well. He is still selling them. Not that you'd want to go broke defending yourself in court over one, easier to just learn magazine change drills.
