Title: if you believe in climate change
Post by: ren on March 21, 2019, 03:55:18 PM
What have you taken to minimize your impact on the environment? i.e. walk, run to work, solar off-grid
I'm not 100% convinced on human caused climate change but I do drive a hybrid and use an electric bike to work around 3 times a week - 30 miles round trip. I also have solar at home and harvest water from my roof for watering the plants etc. Another hobby I have is harvesting 18650 cells from old laptop battery packs and the like. I use a hobby charger to rejuvenate them then put on balancing and charging leads. I make battery packs from my radio and soon a 52 volt pack for my electric bike for added range.

I also curtailed some of my shooting activities and been propagating hibiscus from cuttings.

Maybe we should all just mow the lawn and water the trees

I think there is a difference between pollution and what we call "climate change". We can relate to pollution but I think we are a bit naive to think WE are the ultimate cause of "climate change".

I am planning on having solar water installed soon.
I compost
I installed 4 water catchment bins
And I occasionally pee in my yard instead of wasting water flushing it

I have heard it is illegal in some areas. I have yet to hear a good justification for it though to be objective I have to consider there may be some good reason for it that I am just unaware of.

I found a short article about it. The law does make sense on a number of levels however it does seem like it is applied too strictly in some locations. It started off to prevent people who owned land with rivers to diverting all the water from people who had land downstream.

Instead, Catch it and store in a container and allow it to ferment for 1-3 months. Combine with wood ash, and you have a natural fertilizer that is, at the very least, similar to miracle grow in nutrient profile.

Well I'm definitely not drinking any more Miracle Grow.

All jokes aside I'm a firm believer that if enough people make a small change in their daily lives that it adds up to making the kind of major difference that top-down strategists could never manage on their own. Granted we are far too late to prevent catastrophic consequences and the necessary restructuring of society would have had to take place in the 1980's, but becoming more energy independent also offers a lot of benefits (besides the doo-gooder points) especially as the stable states of natural systems we depend on break down and the world becomes a more hostile place for conducting international trade.

It's like people who argue that Hawaii doesn't need new industries because tourism and military already provide enough. That works great until MIC budgets get shuffled or fuel price spikes make leisure travel cost-prohibitive. The time to figure out alternatives is while the gravy train is still pulling into the station and the consequences of the inevitable failures that go along with any learning process aren't as dire.

you and I on same freq in regards to small changes in our own lives. We don't need no Paris Accords. We need to adopt a new lifestyle. Sick of traffic? No one is forcing you to drive a car.

I think one of the reasons rich liberals show such disdain for average citizens with a more conservative bent is that we are naturally inclined to make the kind of sacrifices they love to talk about but would never take on themselves. The majority of serious prepper types have a carbon footprint far less than a jet setting "influencers" flying around to climate conferences and staying at eco-resorts, but instead of being celebrated they get put down as paranoid possibly sexist/racist backwards rednecks. The latter definitely exist but that's throwing out the baby with the bathwater.

I'm a politically incorrect sort of guy.
I despise Hawaii gun laws and all Democrats.
I think the idea of Man caused climate change is Horse Shiite.
Our climate is ruled by a star that does as it darn well pleases.
It is a naturally occurring Fusion reactor.  That is radiation for
you guys that worry about such things.
Get used to it.
I agree that there is senseless Man caused pollution that can and
should  be prevented.  It should be a logical decision and not an
emotional political one.  Democrats are incapable of logical,
reasoned decisions.  Consequently most the laws they pass to
protect the environment are junk.
I'm trying to go off grid with solar this year. I have 10.6 kW of panels.
I only do it so I don't have to deal with Democrat Bureaucrats telling me
how to live. I won't even get a permit.  I ignore the fact that in producing
those panels  it caused significant damage to the environment that may
take hundreds of years to repair after they stop polluting.
After all it is "renewable" and the pollution
is in China.
