Today I filed a case I've been wanting to file for about 7 years. Hawaii bans the ownership of butterfly knives for no apparent reason. Thankfully Burton Richardson Andrew Namiki Roberts and the Hawaii Firearms Coalition have teamed up with myself and my clients to challenge this unconstitutional law. Please look at the complaint and Burton's expert report.

It's insane that butterfly knives are even banned in the first place.
And working with Burton Richardson on this? The same Richardson who trained under Dan Inosanto? Really cool! My JKD instructor was his student. Was great to meet him and talk story. That was probably around 20 years ago.

I train jiu jitsu with Baret Yoshida on the mainland and Burton used to train with Baret when he lived in Oahu. So when I came to Oahu I got to know Burton and he is a huge 2a supporter so he is volunteering his time to help us.

No one here does anything illegal.
I prefer fixed blades for SD. I can deploy a fixed blade at least twice as fast as the fastest balisong expert.
The balisong is good to play and impress people with fancy tricks, but it’s design does not make it more deadly and I agree the ban is a stupid law.

The balisong wasn't developed to be a show knife. It is/was initially utilized as a common pocket knife/tool that allowed the user to carry a more secure, concealable knife that can be significantly larger than most common pocket knives at the time, as well as be quickly deployed with one hand. Average standard balisong sizes possess a 7-9 inch blade, which is impractical to carry as a fixed blade, given that the overall length would be a almost to over a foot long. One must also consider the technology available at the time balisong we're developed; auto-deploy knives were uncommon, low quality or extremely expensive until modern times, which is a testament to how functional the balisong is, as it has stood the test of time as a dependable knife in communities that still use them as a common pocket knife. It wasn't until later that it was Incorporated into Filipino martial arts, and transitioned into a show and "combat" knife.
It's literally no different than how the Nepalese developed and utilized the kukri vs how kukri are viewed in modern times due to the gurka regiments.
For a while I used to carry a Cold Steel Oyabun, a 9” fixed blade in my front pants pocket. I had my wife modify a couple of pockets to fit it. After out growing the pants horizontally, I switched to carrying two 3.5” fixed blades, one on each side. I am going to start carrying a cane for a longer impact weapon, but I will start another thread about that.
