A great source for SHTF, general medical info... info on antibiotics, when to use, what kind, etc.... lots of "preppers" use this book...

For those interested in SHTF scenarios, herbal medicine can be a lot less complex than you think. For ~some~ health issues it is perfectly viable and its also a way to get a variety of vitamins and minerals that are somewhat difficult to get otherwise unless you stock up on them and carry them with you.
It can't replace antibiotics (actually, for some ailments, it can) and the like but a little knowledge goes a loooooong way towards self sufficiency. Its the kind of stuff every hunter and hiker should know anyway in case they get injured or lost (or lost AND injured) out in the bush.
Stuff like Kukui nut hull sap is a good cough and cold remedy. The sap of honohono grass (with completely green stems, not the ones that have purple in them) will quickly stop the bleeding of minor cuts and speed the healing of the wound. Got any kind of lung infection and have access to fresh garlic? Pound that stuff! Its antiviral and antibacterial and is most effective in lung ailments. It also works directly - you can put a thin slice of garlic directly on a small wound to sterilize it if you have no antibiotic ointment.
No, not as good as modern medicines but way better than nothing if you have no modern medicine.
And when we talk about having stuff to barter if the SHTF... knowledge is some of the most handy stuff to have. Weighs nothing, takes up no space and it makes people want to have you around. :D

+1 you rock! Thanks!
Anyone have any ideas where I could take a wilderness survival class locally. Or something that can teach me the medicinal properties of some of the local flora here in Hawaii?
-
I know the county and state are/is/am pushing free emergency/disaster training seminars here...
Been coming up in the local news paper.
It's a pretty involved class though.. like a week long.
We going sign up as soon as they do a close to home one in town.

I know they have CERT, are there others I am not aware of?
-
Not sure if CERT, was a while back and gotta check... supposed to be coming central area soon... Gotta keep an eye on the news paper... :shaka:

Great Link! :) Thanks! Saved...
I still like the fact of a hard copy... If S really HTF... computers/smart phones ain't gonna work...
I like knowing the fact I can reference the book anytime at home or in the bush if need be... :shaka:

Off topic... but I have an Android tablet and a solar panel that can charge it. Partly because I needed a simple goal for the home built solar panel, and partly because I can keep the entire Appropriate Technology library, all the reloading manuals, the Encyclopedia Britannica and a bunch of other books on a thumb drive or 2 and power it all off the sun.

Not off topic at all... I carry a back up battery replenisher for my smart phone that can fully charge the android twice... Giving me a good several days in the bush. A solar charger would be sweet.... That way you can access all stored info/apps...without internet (ception being a solar storm)
Back comes the hard copies...
