Closing arguements are next Tuesday if I heard correctly. I don't know how long the jury will take to reach a verdict, but from what I see on the news and from what various news legal analysts are saying, if I was in their shoes I would be plenty worried.

I will be pleasantly surprised if this comes to anything remotely resembling justice. Will be even more surprised if even more corruption is pursued and justice served. Here's to hoping!

I saw comments on HNN that the defense royally screwed up by letting their witness take a bunch of records and notes to the stand. The prosecution destroyed the defense witness's credibility.
If I remember correctly, the witness carried a bunch of notes and other papers to the witness stand to help refresh his memory when answering questions. Courtroom rules state that any documents the witness refers to during questioning can be requested by any party to become part of the record.
The prosecution made such a request, and he asked that the witness not remove any papers from the witness chair during the recess.
After the recess, the prosecutor asked the witness multiple times if he reviewed, flipped through or removed any papers from the stack he'd brought. Each time, the witness denied it.
Then the prosecutor showed the courtroom surveillance video footage of the witness doing exactly that. One scene looked like he slid a paper (or a few pieces of paper) into his lap.
"Who you going to believe -- me, or your lying eyes?"

That witness was Katherine Kealoha’s civil attorney. Should be some good stuff in his notes and as an attorney he should have known better. I hope both get a few years in prison and put in the general population. Sure to get an “early release” that way.

Gov’t’s closing arguments supposed to be limited to 3 hours!
That’s like an entire LOTR movie!
-
I think the jury will start deliberations this afternoon. That is what I concluded after watching the 10pm news last night since only got 3.5 hours more of closing arguements. I can hardly wait for the decision, almost like following the OJ trial.
-
I foresee jurors' mailboxes disappearing one by one.

I'm pretty sure their mailboxes don't need to disappear for the jurors to be quite clear about how the Kealohas deal with their adversaries... we'll likely never know to what degree that knowledge influenced their ability to reach an "objective" decision.

But no black people will jump up in celebration like how when OJ was found not guilty.

I'm just hoping for a repeat of the 1st Annual Los Angeles BBQ & Picnic they had after the Rodney King verdict. Lots of Korean BBQ here....
But in all seriousness, if found NG, how much lower can the views of Hawaii LEO and AG go?
-
Guilty
-
That sure was a fast verdict. At least justice was served. They should be locked up till sentencing.
-
Guilty
I am amazed. Now lets See if they get probation.....
-
HNN said they still have their bank fraud trial coming up which will be far more difficult to defend against since there is an extensive paper trail. They and the other two former HPD officers who were found guilty should all get jail time.
-
Also trial for Kat selling drugs through her brother on Big Island. That one will be lots of fun.
-
sad for our City. Now we as taxpayers will have to face the lawsuits.

I’m thinking different because federal. But...

If it were a state thing, then I would say at most they would get 6 months and out in 2 months. But because it's the feds, IDK. They might make an example and do an OJ in Vegas.

Kat Kealoha will be locked up unril her sentencing in Oct, Judge Seabright ruled.

Good
Read that there are possibly other charges pending for the Kealohas. Wonder how far this will continue as sentencing for this conviction proceeds as well as if additional charges are pursued.
Next up, Kaneshiro...

Couldn't happen to a more deserving person. Now we have to wait all these months to see what the actual "punishment" is... for this trial verdict... then two more on the way.
"On the conviction", [her attorney] added, “I only have three words: Appeal, appeal, appeal.”
-
The jury found both of the Kealohas guilty of five of the six counts against them:
Conspiracy and four counts of attempted obstruction.
They were found not guilty of making false statements.
I guess filing a false police report under penalty of perjury doesn't count as "making false statements."

well we all know Hawaii judges have a different interpretation. maybe because of the pidgin? somethings just get lost in translation. kinna hahd fo' unnastan'.
you think shell-shocked Louis is having 2nd thoughts about the woman he hitched up with, for better or for worse?
I'm sure Katherine will be an outstanding jail house lawyer, inmates are probably already lining up to be on her client list, in exchange for favors, protection, and specialty "skills".
-
Dey lucky dey goin federal prison. Dey wud b dead meat in Halawa or any otta local prison.

He seemed to be fine with the lifestyle her fraudulent and illegal activities afforded them.
Maybe her personality was improved, too, when under the influence?

She'll be in isolation for a couple of days until they have an idea if she's safe in GenPop being "former law enforcement".

Are we really supposed to believe that current HPD chief Susan Ballard was in the higher echelons of the HPD brass for all these years and knew nothing of Kealoha's corrupt practices, including his use of the "secret police" (two of whom are now convicted felons and will be "dismissed" from the force)?
-
So since Louis denied CCW permits while he was corrupt does this conviction invalidate those decision?
Who would think that a corrupt police chief would deny you your right but abuse his powers for personal gain? Only in Hawaii.....

Well, to be fair, there have been and are corrupt police chiefs elsewhere, but the difference is that here in Hawaii it is the normal and accepted order of things... the damn feds from the mainland didn't understand that... fucking haoles...

I hope that more people will see how the argument of "only govt should have guns" is an irony and just ignorance. Why should we trust govt to begin with? Especially when it comes to our own rights.
-
Now we have the investigation of the Kauai PD going on, about cheating on the qualification tests. If this is only the stuff we know about, imagine all the lying, stealing and other corruption taking place in all the PDs in Hawaii. A few weeks ago there was that cop on Molokai arrested on drug charges. Any wonder why I do not trust the police or have respect for them?

you'd think it would be a slam-dunk for the FBI to determine make-model-year of the vehicle based on grill shape, lights, door & window shapes, vehicle profile, taillight pattern. and then cross it with the elite special Criminal Intelligence Unit, their wives' cars, buddy officers, etc. I'll bet the real mail box burglar is considering moving to Argentina or something right now. just a matter of time before the other shoe drops. his goose is as good as cooked. I guess getting a conviction might be another story, but ought to be able pressure him to sing like a canary.

it's possible that the "old boy network" shunned Ballard if they considered her to be too much of a straight-arrow goody-2-shoes "boy scout". she might've felt that "those guys" are probably up to no good, but MYOB carries the day. possible, maybe even probable, but i'd go with "unlikely". my bet is that she had more than an inkling that foul deeds were afoot. she needs to clean house, top-to-bottom, drain her own deep-state swamp. might have to fire 50% of the force, but i'll bet the ever-strong SHOPO police union is a major obstacle to a clean-up. in fact, the bad cops can count on SHOPO to defend them to the end, until proven guilty. And we all know how difficult that is here in Hawaii. Hawaii judges....
ETA: if she lets the corrupt bad boy secret society continue to exist within her organization, not making it a top priority to root them out, then she's just as guilty, and shares in the corruption for being the one that can be counted on to "look the other way".

I would like to know why the other two convicted felons, Nyugen and Hahn, are still on HPD payroll. Hahn called in sick the day after the trial and taxpayers are paying for it. Do they still have their badge, gun and police powers? Hope at least that got taken away. Louie has to return the $250k payout he got when he resigned, but that money is probably long gone.

King Louis still has his pension and I'm sure some other assets. They didn't get to the position of "Honolulu's Power Couple" and have nothing tangible to show for it.
The retirement agreement says he has 60 days from the end of his last appeal for the conviction to repay the full amount. That means he'll want to delay the appeal for as long as possible, knowing he's on the hook for a quarter of a million bucks when that process ends.

Heard on the evening news that Kat Kealoha will be doing her time on the mainland.

Unless I'm mistaken, the Honolulu Administrative Federal Detention Center (FDC) is the only Hawaii facility for federal prisoners. As an FDC, its mission is to house pretrial inmates.
Once Kealoha is sentenced, she'll have to be transferred to a federal facility for women on the mainland -- no other choice.
I find it interesting that she's being held pending her October sentencing even though violent offenders with 50+ arrests are routinely released on bail here. Maybe that's one difference between the feds and the state?

Anyone hear about what the recommended sentence was for King Louie? Came out on the news that Kat get between 11 to 14 years. Louie's recommendation was yesterday but haven't found anything about it. Judge Seabright will be doing the sentencing and indications are he will go on the high end. Very curious to see what the other convict cops are going to get.

It's a "secret". Seems like since it's a federal court document that the media should be able to get it via a FOIA request. Maybe not, since it's reported to be a "draft", not a final official document. Louie's lawyer, of course, just says it's on the low end.
Sentencing recommendations for Katherine and Louis Kealoha filed in federal court
https://www.khon2.com/news/local-news/sentencing-recommendations-for-katherine-and-louis-kealoha-filed-in-federal-court/
HONOLULU (KHON2) — Sentencing recommendations for Katherine and Louis Kealoha have been filed in federal court.
Katherine’s attorney says the government is seeking up to 14 years imprisonment for her, plus $289,000 restitution to be paid to Gerard and Florence Puana, her uncle and grandmother.
Attorney Earle Partington says the sentencing draft refers to Katherine as the ringleader of the conspiracy to frame Gerard and misspend Florence’s money.
Partington says he will meet with the feds to try to cut down the recommended sentence and plans to file an objection, plus an appeal after sentencing.
Louis Kealoha’s draft recommendations are not public and his attorney has not disclosed those terms, but Partington says he expects Louis and the police officers who were also convicted to be facing far less prison time.
-
Not surprised. Preferred treatment for ex-cops, or did any actually get fired or did they resign.
-
14 years aint bad in this case. It's Federal time so she'll have to serve most of it in prison and the restitution is good.
Remember this is only part of the charges she's facing. She still has a couple more trials to go through. She'll probably be in prison for the rest of her life.
-
KHON2 news reported that the Louis Kealoha pre-sentencing report was filed but is not being made public, and his lawyer isn't releasing the terms.
Based on the federal court's system of "points", each strike against a defendant found guilty is assessed points for each facet of their crimes. Katherine's points are why the 10-14 year estimate exists. His points, as well as those of the 2 Cops being sentences in Oct, are fewer, but still represent significant prison time. So, those same people giving estimates think he'll get close, but fewer, years as his wife.
The judge also has discretion in sentencing within guidelines, but this specific judge is not known for being lenient.
Remember, this is just the first in a string of prosecutions for "Honolulu's Power Couple."

It's been surprisingly quiet on this the past 2-3 months or so. I am more interested in other charges and investigation into Katherine, but I am surprised that things have seemed pretty quiet.
-
Color me surprised jail time is being considered. They don't have the money and power to get people suicided I guess. They should be making deals and getting the rest of these criminals indicted.
