Title: Petition Asks White House to Recognize Second Amendment Does Not ‘Give’ a Right
Post by: punaperson on July 01, 2019, 08:54:32 AM
Petition to the White House re the nature of the right to keep and bear arms (among others). This one of my pet peeves... people thinking/stating that the Second Amendment gives people the right to keep and bear arms. It doesn't. It merely (supposedly) protects against the government infringing a pre-existing human right that precedes any government at all anywhere. If a government can give you something, they can also take it away, which means it is a privilege, not a right... rights are "unalienable".

David Codrea wrote the petition, and here is the link to his article about it, followed by the link to the petition itself.

Recognize that the government does not "give citizens the right to bear arms."

Created by D.C. on June 27, 2019

The White House website section on the Constitution ( https://www.whitehouse.gov/about-the-white-house/the-constitution/ ) instructs "The Second Amendment gives citizens the right to bear arms." This is exactly wrong and contradicts the very nature of unalienable rights, the clear intent of the Founders and the understanding of the right as articulated by the Supreme Court.

Privileges are granted. Rights are inherent to the condition of being human. The Second Amendment didn’t create a right to keep and bear arms — it acknowledged a right that was already assumed and accepted at the time of ratification. Nobody in government gave us that right, so it’s not theirs to take away.

Please correct your website description and make an announcement about the change.

Signed.

Although my faith in that White House petition site is low.  Has the White House ever given official response to any 2A related subject as a result of crossing the 100,000 signature threshold?
That old 'Repeal the NFA' petition listed on there had crossed the 100k mark back in February of 2017. Sitting at over 300k, currently collecting digital dust.
Sorry, not trying to be a Debbie Downer about it... Just wish they'd actually respond as they claim.
