Title: Big Island Range Public Hearing June 6
Post by: robtmc on May 24, 2012, 08:29:44 AM
Even though the money has been allotted, DLNR is going to hold a public hearing June 6.  Do not have any idea how much anti-gun hysteria might cause those types to show up and oppose, but if you are on the BI, seems like a good idea to show and support.  I hate that stuff, but I will drag meself there.

Public Hearings/Meetings are required as past of the Environmental Assessment/Environmental Impact Statement process.  Community impact and input is part of the process and typically a series of hearings/meetings are a normal part of the process in determining environmental impacts.  Some of the hearings can get quite contentious and some of them, hardly anyone will show. up.  Even if funding is secured, the designers still need to determine and mitigate any environmental impacts.

Yes, good luck to those of you on the BI!  Hope this process goes smoothly for you!

Bump it up!  Hopefully there will be a large turn out in support of the range.

Does anyone know of the public hearing schedule and if there is going to be one on the Hilo side?

For those of you that are going please testify in support.

It's tonight.

Haha. Sorry my days are mixed up.
I hope all goes well.

The reason I ask is that I noticed an announcement, in the latest edition of a NRA's American Rifleman, of a highpower rifle match schedule for someplace on the Big Island. So I hope that is true. Maybe I can fly up for some F-class matches or work on my vintage rifle skills.

Have not heard of any such.  But seeing as how this is all about a range for the west side, dunno why have a Hilo meet.

Well it's still in the same county even if it is ~100 miles away from where I live.  I shot an email off to the DLNR to see if there is going to be.

Meeting went well, very cordial, as you would expect from gun enthusiasts.

Meeting was primarily historical with the effort over the years, and following up with the range plans, surveys, etc.  Questions about funding and acceptance of public labor/help to get things done.  Will be built in stages, partly due to excavation issues working on a lave flow.

West hawaii Today (liberal rag) had a brief article:]http://www.westhawaiitoday.com/sections/news/local-news/no-longer-shot-dark.html] (http://www.westhawaiitoday.com/sections/news/local-news/no-longer-shot-dark.html)

I like the attempt to downplay the meet:

"Most, if not all, of the attendees Wednesday seemed to be in favor of the range. "

That is a flat out lie.  There was unanimous enthusiasm.  Absolutely no dissent.  About what I expect from WHT, surprised they even mentioned it.  They ignored the meeting before it was held, or I suspect a lot more people would have shown up.

Sounded all good.  They had a list of the facitlities planned, and I believe it was said the construction would be in phases following that list.

Good if so, a 30 point 200yard rifle range was first, a pistol range second.  Probably too soon in planning to know, but i was curious about access to the range targets.  Suspect it will be like Kokohead, walk out during cease fires.

Going to be an interesting facility with lots of things planned.

I hope that the county will be able to come up with the 25% matching funds for the grant.

I asked one person that I know how will the facility be run from what he told me it would be similar to the way the Race Track on the Big Island is run with clubs running the various ranges.
