It is to protect the ships and crew from idiot extremist who protect the whales and dolphins from fishermen. Because whales and dolphins are so adorable, smart and friendly ::) watch Whale Wars on the Animal planet or search See shepherd and Captain Paul Watson.
Here are some of the extreme act's these wealthy baby's go through to put honest fisherman in jail or out of work.

The Sea Shepard's are nothing more than terrorists. They employ terrorist methods and attacks to stop the Japanese from whaling. Don't get me wrong, I would prefer the Japanese not do this. But doing what the Sea Shepard's do to try and stop the Japanese from whaling is wrong.

Being a bit of a sailor myself, I enjoy watching Whale Wars just to laugh at those fraqing idiots on the Sea Shepherd embarrass themselves.

I love the way they pat themselves on the back for being a bunch of badass eco-warriors, until the Japanese do something that remotely resembles defending their vessel, at which point they all burst into tears about the savagery of their "attackers". If I was a Japanese whaling captain, I'd be straight up shooting at them, and not with a non-lethal rubber bullet like Old Balls got hit with. Attempting to destroy a vessel's means of propulsion in the Antarctic is tantamount to attempting to kill the entire crew, and I'd respond to that lethal threat accordingly.

The Sea Shepard's spend millions to stop the whalers. That could buy allot of sushi. Hmm....interesting thought, stay home,send money to Japan, they go fishing (not for whale) everybody wins.
