Running Spartan Armor lvl3 steel. Thinking of upgrading to something that will stop xm193 or anything over 3000fps for 5.56/223 since its the most common round used.
Contenders
Spartan Armor lvl4 ceramic (cheaper than lvl3+ steel and stops more)
AR500 Armor lvl 3+ steel lightweight
DFNDR overpriced

Seriously though, I am sure there will be sales coming up for Black Friday/Cyber Monday, etc. I've seen sales for Spartan Armor many times in the past.
Need to consider that ceramics/composites have a stated shelf-life. So if you throw them around, travel with them, etc, have to factor that in as well. Not trying to steer you away from those, but just something to keep in mind with those.

Right now AR500 Armor has a sale on their steel lvl3+ with trauma pads for $162 (front and rear plates).
I'm on the fence about steel vs. ceramic. For Spartan Armor, their steel last 20 years, their ceramics about 8-12. Their CSC said you don't have to store them right side up either or hanging. The lighter weight steels cost way more than the ceramics for the same weight. Weight is sort of a factor, but I do only wear it once a month, so not too much of a big deal.

Narrowed it down to either Spartan lvl3+ steel $290 or Spartan lvl 4 Ceramic $350. They might have a black friday sale. If they do have the 20% off, I'm going with the lvl4 ceramics. Weight is about the same as the steel. Down side is a 5 year shelf life vs. 20. Figure save $8 a month and can buy another one in 5 years.
AR500 Armor is out because online they say their lvl3 steel stops xm193, but youtube shows otherwise. And right now the lead time is 3-4 months.

$290 for the steel? Is that for the “entry level package” with carrier and side plates? That sounds like a lot.
“A friend” has a couple of sets of the 550. We have been planning to shoot one of them that has the spall coating. I know it’s been done and shown on YT videos, but we wanted to try some tests for ourselves.
There was another brand of composite that was recommended by a trusted friend. But I can’t seem to find the company now. They weren’t cheap though, but had some pretty light options.

That's just for the front and rear plate. The plates are actually like $204. But add $63 for the spall coating. I'm gonna sell my lvl3 steel once I get my replacement. I was looking into the light weight lvl 3+ or 4 from various companies. But they all cost about $800ish. And at most, I wear my carrier once a month anywhere from 2-7 hours. So not worth the increase in price for me.
I ran a class once without my carrier because I injured my lower back. The class was waaaayyyyyy easier. I had to piss about 3 times because I wasn't sweating as much. Compared to not pissing at all cause I'm sweating the water out.
Originally, I wanted the Dragon Skin by Pinnacle, but they seemed to have gone out of business.

don't forget to factor in the shipping cost. when i bought my plates, they excluded HI from the "free shipping" promotions. shipping was almost $75 to HI so i sent it to my dad's house in AZ instead.

Last promo Spartan Armor had, they honored free shipping to HI. THey used a flat rate USPS box and it was heavy and busting at the seams. Told my coworker I ordered a mold and powder materials to make my own bowling ball.

you mentioned that you were considering ceramic plates. if you decide on those, then you might want to consider the potential damage to the ceramic that can occur during shipping/handling. any kind of micro cracks in the ceramic will decrease the efficacy and life of the plate.

Is there any way to inspect the plate for said damage? My last order was steel, so their handling of ceramics might be different. IDK.
*edit, went on line and Spartan Armor says cermanics should be xrays annual to look for any cracks. Maybe when I see my chiro, I'll bring my plates.

Going to have some plates made out of this. I've been told from a reliable source it resists light sabers and is impervious to blasters. Should hold up well against green tips. This is the way.

I have rebranded Hesco 4400 level 4, RMA 1155 level 4. For novelty/project I have a pair of surplus Mile Dragic level 3 polyethylene plates I got off eBay for cheap, and a pair of these SiC multicurve strike faces that I hope one day to laminate it with UHMWPE or some kind of backer.
I highly recommend avoiding steel armor plates unless you’re using it for training and working out. Ceramic is the way to go and they’re affordable and well worth spending to save your life.

You can X-ray them. Otherwise cracks on ceramic plates usually require way more force than you’d expect, and if a plate does happen to have a crack it won’t really compromise the performance of the plate that much.
“It was found that all batches of plates assessed as A1 condition exceeded the ballistic specification by at least 15% and even when severely cracked the ballistic performance remained at least 10% above specification. No evidence was found of any construction effects, defects or deterioration due to age that resulted in a reduction in ballistic performance “ (a case study in the 23rd International Symposion on Ballistics, 2007).
