It is pretty well established that your life is meaningless in a public place.
Hawaii law.
You can just comply and hope a cop will get there in time, or you can
die, or you can become a criminal yourself.
Everybody has to decide.
I have a lawyer on speed dial.
This is Hawaii.  The Democrat party paradise.

Police have to find someone who can identify the male in the video, someone who knows/met the guy personally.

Oh, so now hearsay isn't okay?

If someone saw this guy at Walmart, based on nothing other than the video, are you saying they have to KNOW HIM PERSONALLY before calling in a tip?

OMFG!

reading about all this crime around this time of the year - it seems that criminals are getting bolder and more violent. I'm tired of our local leaders to tell us to comply. It's like telling us to OBEY THEM - either criminals or our local Democrats.
We need to drain our swamp. We need leaders that will empower US. Not have more feel good laws that strip away our rights and leave us helpless while the political elite enjoy their own tax payer funded security.
I'm afraid we will be like Cali :'( :grrr:

"I'm afraid we will be like Cali"
Hawaii already is and in many ways worse.
I grew up in So. Ca.  I've been in Hawaii almost 20 years.
So I can compare Avocados to Avocados.
Until you obliterate the Democrat party in Hawaii
you may as well plan for the worst and go "Galt",
practice Passive- Aggression and read up on 4GW.
Aloha.

Listening to KHON news on 830AM tonight.  HPD wants the public to know that crime on Oahu is not on the rise even though there have been more high profile cases in the news.

HOWEVER, HPD also said what's different is the increase in firearm use ... a 20% increase they say.  They gave some lame psycho-babblle explanation of how much more desperate criminals are that they are using firearms.   :wtf:

I wonder if "desperation" is the same as "distressed?"

it's an excuse to build a rallying cry for more gun control laws...criminals won't be affected...gee I wonder why....we will...and more defenseless and compliant we will be to criminals and lawmakers

Reading between the lines, the HPD comments tell me that a crime will automatically become "high profile" anytime a firearm is involved.  Not because the crime deserves more public awareness, but because the media and politicians need these stories to drive their gun control narratives.

If crime hasn't increased, yet more crimes are high profile simply based on "GUN!!!", it has nothing to do with public safety.  it's purely political and driven by the media's need to attract click$$.

You sure love straw man arguments.

When you show a genuine interest in the answer I will be happy to explain it to you but I am not going tango in your sarcastic BS.

What does the red flag have to do with rules on making identification of suspects?

About as much as "someone who knows/met the guy personally" has to do with it.

Funny how when you are wrong you just claim to be right instead of admitting you don't know what you are talking about.

How about allowing law abiding citizens to defend themselves?
How come HPD doesn’t issue CCWs?

https://miami.cbslocal.com/2019/11/25/miami-man-kills-ak-47-wielding-robber/

I realize HPD’s hands are tied until they have someone willing to press charges. However, what about the homeowner that got burglarized?

In this case, HPD’s inability to arrest someone who is caught on video committing a crime just further shows their inability to protect the public from these criminals.

I’m not faulting HPD so much except for the lack of CCW licenses.  Since HPD can’t really protect us public from these criminals, how long will they not allow us to protect ourselves?

When I see stories like this in Hawaii, my first thought is, "Of which Cop is the perp a relative, friend or friend of a relative?  Maybe relative of a friend of the Mayor?"

Everyone here knows or is related to so many people, it's difficult to find two people who don't have some connection to each other.

Six degrees of separation?  More like 1, maybe 2, degrees here.

I remember when I moved here, I was told a SHOPO decal on my rear window or license plate was well worth the effort and cost.

From my experience, HPD is soft of property crime, always saying no one gonna get hurt, claim it with insurance.

People get hurt because they are lenient and permissive about this.

Fewer and fewer police investigations for property crimes have ended in the cases being resolved.
The property crime clearance rate went from its highest point in recent years at 13.8% in 2012 to 6.5% in 2017, the most recent figures available from the Attorney General’s office.
The FBI defines clearing a crime as a law enforcement agency closing a case by either making an arrest or because some exceptional situation prevents the agency from arresting or charging an offender.
Some news organizations last year reported that Honolulu Police Chief Susan Ballard warned property crime investigations would have to wait because of staffing shortages.

Big Island is even worse.  I know several people who got their home broken in and stuff stolen, but did not even bother to report it to the police. They said it was a waste of time, especially when they got unpermitted homes and no homeowners insurance.

Even with homeowner's and renter's insurance, you have to lose more than the amount of your deductible for that to be any use.

Many losses are cash and credit cards.  At least the credit card companies will cancel fraudulent charges if you report the theft within a short time after discovering the theft.

I was told by a police officer the addicts are mostly looking for high value and easily concealable property they can shove in a pocket.  Cell phones, money, charge cards, gift cards, jewelry, etc.  Most aren't driving up to the house and loading stuff in their trunk for 20 minutes.  I've seen one burglar on foot walk away from the place he robbed pulling a piece of roll-away luggage -- from the victim's place of course.  All the loot was inside we assume.

I keep most of valuables in safes.  As for electronics, my insurance company depreciates their value at 10% per year.  That's why I have a "replacement value" policy that pays me for a comparable replacement item vs. the after-market resale value.

Still, I think my deductible is $1,000.  I'm out up to that much before insurance pays anything.

A few years ago, I was gonna buy a 1911.  But some jerkoff hit my bumper in a times parking lot and ran.  That cost me $500 (deductible).  Then my TV crapped out.  So that was another $500.  Then some jerkoff hit my side mirror.  But didn't want to shell out another $500.  So there went my 1911 fund. I was gonna get the SIG Scorpion.

Fast forward to this year.  Some crackhead keyed 2 blocks of cars in my old area (kapahulu).  I was moving so I waited until I did to repaint.  But it cost me my $500 deductible again.  Good thing I waited because some people painted their cars within a week and he came back and did it again.  Because the camera's didn't see him actually keying the cars, he was never arrested.  The cameras just caught him walking around each car.  There was a wall blocking the view of the hand to car body contact.

But he did throw a brick through a nail salon window and they got that on camera, so he was in jail for that.

I don't know if they are soft on property crime... The nature of property crime makes it harder to catch the bad guys so it makes sense they aren't solved as often. The bleeding hearts are also pushing courts to take softer and softer forms of punishment recently so that could be part of it.
