Hodgdon Powder Supply Update:
We just returned from the Big Rock Shooting Sports show held last week in Nashville, where we had a chance to sit down with the folks from Hodgdon (Hodgdon, IMR and Winchester powders.)
During 2019 the industry experienced shortages of some of Hodgdon's most popular powders, including Retumbo and H1000, and by the end of the year, Varget. These powders, as well as H4350, are shipped in barrels from Australia.
We asked Hodgdon why these shortages occurred, and what we should expect in 2020 ??
Going back to 2017 and early 2018 Hodgdon, and the whole industry were experiencing unusually poor demand. They made substantial government sales in 2017-2018 to soak up what they believed was excess supply at that time.
By late 2018 and 2019 demand was picking up again, especially for big case magnum powders. Unfortunately during this same period Hodgdon began experiencing supply problems from Australia. These problems are logistical and not related to production. Australia and steamship lines have new regulations concerning how much powder can be shipped on one vessel, how much powder can be in a container terminal at one time, and the hazard classification of the powder itself. Shipments were delayed and a few were even returned to the producer during 2019 due to these issues.
Hodgdon believes they are now ahead of the problems and will have more success shipping the Australian powders in 2020. Some is on the way now, which should make it into distribution by April. Varget, H1000 and H4350 should be back in distribution by April, Retumbo should be available sometime April to June.
Thanks for your interest!

Good to know
-
I was wondering if the fires in Australia were going to effect the supply from Hodgdon as they get a lot of their powders from there.

Australian powders are impervious to fires. 8)
Seriously, I've heard that Varget is hard to come by.

And Varget is made in Australia.

I have a new source for some reloading supplies on the Internet. He is located in Washington state. He only sells brass and bullets. He has been saying that his distributors are saying the big shortage is going to become a reality around October. This applies to everything. Not just brass and bullets. I am already seeing primers getting tough to find online. Same for certain Hodgdon powders. Varget, H4895, Retumbo, H1000, H335 IMR4895, etc. He said that he is having trouble getting his orders of Xtreme Bullets already. He only got half his last order and the rest is backordered.
I hope it doesn’t get as bad as 2008.

Hey Dave :shaka:
After I read your post I figured I better order a case of 9mm 115 or 124/125 grain bullets . . . SNS Castings no stock . . . Montana Gold no stock . . . Berries no stock . . . :(

Aloha Eric,
I did the same. Went around to all the same places you did. Montana Gold is my go to bullet. They only had 100 round packs at an outrageous price. I tried Xtreme, Brunos, and Powder Valley. Powder Valley still has a few Sierra and Hornady but of course quantities will cost dearly. I did manage to find 1,000 Speer plated bullets at Powder Valley for practice ammo. But I want to have a case on hand just in case this shortage lasts a long time. I think I waited too long. :(
-
Well I have been having better luck finding powder and primers. But bullets are another story. During the last shortage it was powder and primers I had a hard time finding. But right now “heads”

Hey, I have my priorities straight!!!
I am slowly accumulating stuff to start casting. So far I have the melting pot and some lead alloy. Next month I’ll build a bench and buy a mold or two. I figure I’ll be ready to start casting in about 2-3 months.

Three Forks Ammo & Reloading
I emailed Hodgdon a few weeks ago about the constant short supply of Varget. i received a response around a week later basically stating that Varget is in high demand and they are producing it. BUT, buy it as soon you as you see it in stock as it sells out within a day.
I have been watching it daily, but yet to see it return to "in stock." I check multiple times a day.
:wtf: Why don't they produce more if they know that it sells out within a day?
-
they are at max capacity

Didn’t you just sell an 8lb jug in May?
I actually was able to score a decent amount of Varget, IMR4895 and H4895. So I am sitting pretty well along with all my other go to powders.

lol, I did. I was "inquiring for a friend." I actually sold a bunch of powder so I could pick up more of what I wanted - IMR4895. So I have around a few ounces of gun powder now ;)
Varget is like Girl Scouts' Thin Mints . . . can always trade or sell for what you want.
-
H4895 is another one that is always out of stock. But, I think IMR4895 is betterer . . .
-

I agree, IMR4895 is “betterer” for most of my cartridges that use a heavier bullet. I still find H335 is better in the same cartridges for lighter bullets. IMR4895 is also one of the most versatile powders you can buy. If you can find any. I just recently saw that PV had a bunch so I jumped on it and on IMR4198. However, Varget is supposed to be less temperature sensitive which really isn’t a concern for you but it is for me. So I have been accumulating both so I can test and determine how much that makes a difference to me.
H4895 I reserve for those cartridges in my weaker action Milsurps or those that hurt my shoulder when I shoot them with full power loads. Hodgdons did me a great favor when they produced their white paper on how to easily and safely reduce loads using H4895. But I also have been having a problem getting almost any powder I use due to this panic. So I have been buying H4895 anytime I see it because it also pops up in almost every reloading manual I own on pretty much every cartridge I load for (Except obsolete cartridges). So if this panic continues longer than I expect it to, and I start running low/out on specific powders I can use H4895 as an acceptable substitute. I am developing loads side by side using my favored powders and H4895.
Out here, while powder is at a premium, and people are jumping on anything available now, people are really panicking over the lack of primers. So primers are more of the “Thin Mints” out here. People are paying a premium for SPP and SRP out here. I am pretty flush with primers except LPP. I do need to accumulate more.

Mahalo for the detailed info Inspector!
I did notice that powder prices on Powder Valley jumped this past weekend. Changes that ranged from a dollar or so for an 8-lb jug to $16 for other jugs.
I still have a ton of SPP from when only Tulammo was in stock a few years back and I ordered a case or or two or a few . . .

There is this little LGS here that doesn’t normally stock a lot of reloading supplies. I was surprised when I saw a new shipment of CCI primers of all sizes! So I thought I would buy a couple of boxes of LPP which I could use and when I asked the price, are you ready for this, they wanted $79.95 for a box of 1,000!!!!! I bought 2 used ammo boxes for $2 and walked out. I probably will never make a big purchase there.

That is insane! I bought a case of Federal GMM LRP for less than double that at SEC a couple of months ago . . .

On Gunbroker primers are selling for $1,500-$1,600 a case of 5,000 at auction.

That's probably why they decided to stock the primers: massive profit margin!
