How do private sales done? I only know usually both parties meet at HPD. But is the transfer instant? Or is there things to prepare prior to meeting at HPD?
Sorry if this topic has been addressed already. Feel free to link me if it has.

It's the same process as buying from a store. Transfers are instant once the relevant permit to acquire is obtained.

Transfers are usually done at HPD to ensure that the new owner's registration goes through without any problems.

You can also do the sale at home if you know the person. Make copies and the only problem you have to mail it to HPD. They wont accept faxes from private individuals. or you can drop it off if you down there. You can also call to verify it was transferred. I have done this many times.

The guys at Hpd told me to just give a bill of sale to the buyer next time I do a private sale. They seemed quite adamant about me not being there, for some reason.
As long as the buyer has a permit your good to go, right?
-
So basically:
1) Buyer must have pistol permit - which to acquire needs all of the information about the gun from the seller
2) After 1), present the pistol to HPD for verification
3) Seller can check for proper transfer
Sounds about right?

For handguns, I take payment and give a bill of sale with all the required info (make, model, serial, & current registraion #) so the buyer can start the process. Once the permit to acquire is approved, I verify all the info, amend the bill of sale with the G#, then have the buyer sign and date. At that point, I keep the bill of sale and he gets the handgun. Pretty simple.
Same goes for long guns without the waiting... just a bill of sale (including G#) and ID verification.

It's most likely because the little room can get pretty crowded and sellers are not required to complete the registration process.

Now this got me thinking, what does the seller do with the old registration?
-
When I bought my 1911, I had to get 1) Serial #
2) Caliber
3) Length of Barrel
4) Sellers Name, Address, Phone#
5) Make/Model
6) Semi Auto...(etc.)
Shoots, I hope I'm not leaving anything out...... ???

You gotta keep it so you can show what you "use to have" ;D nah nah, good question.... ???

I asked the guy behind the window and was told to write transferred on the registration and to hold on to it.

Sorry for being a noob at this, but what exactly is a bill of sale? Just a piece of paper w/a signature? And what is G#? TIA :shaka:

All the basic info except for #4...For seller info all you need is their name and G# off the current registration. That's all the guys/ladies behind the window need.
**Take note: Whether you're the seller or buyer, you NEVER give out the original (or a copy) of your registraion/permit in a private transaction. Doesn't matter it's your best friend, the personal information on these forms should never be shared.

You're should to keep it for your records and "void" it with indelible ink. I usually write: "Transferred to Name/G###### on mm/dd/yyyy" with a sharpie.

It's just a record of the sale with the basic info, so yes a signed piece of paper documenting the transaction. G#'s are on every Hawaii firearm permit and registration.
There are a lot of generic bill of sale templates online (google firearm bill of sale) or just click----> HERE (http://www.freebillofsaleform.org/freebillofsaleform/Gun-bill-of-sale.rtf)
I use something similar, but don't include $ value.
