I was talking to my nephew in AZ last night. He said people are panic buying ammo and stores are out. I googled it and it is true. Not just in AZ but all over the country. So I decided to order some .22 ammo so I’ll have when I move. Guess what? Big run on some types of .22 ammo. In particular I found CCI Standard Velocity was not easily found. And what I could find was either only a box or two left or price gouging going on. I found one place with 800 rounds in stock so I ordered it right away. While I was in process to order, the price went up from $6.00/100 to $6.25/100. Not a huge jump, but still it went up mid order. The only companies with any large stocks is asking $8.00/100 or more. Or the places that don’t charge a flat fee shipping still had. I also bought some CCI Blazer .22 which is another fav of mine. The companies that I looked at still had some quantities but I saw the price go up over night from $0.037/round ($18.50/brick) to $0.044/round ($22.00/brick). I paid $0.05/round ($25.00/brick) because I could not find a place with more than a couple of 50 round boxes. I finally found a place that would flat ship and had a few thousand boxes in stock. It is nice that I can order ammo and have it shipped to my house. But if we are going to have shortages again, it will hard to find even mail order.
While I don’t see a run yet on powder and primers it may be coming. Just be prepared. Unfortunately, I had to sell all of my powder, primers and ammo because I cannot take with me in my container. So I hope there is still plenty when I get there. In the meantime, make sure you have. This will not last as long as the last drought. It may not even get as bad as the last one. If you don’t have at least 3 months worth of ammo, I would think of stocking up.

Vegas stores are empty of guns and ammo. Spartan arms posted a vid on their fb. They have like 6 revolvers left and 8 rifles (bolt action). Everything else is sold out. Their store look like 2000 sqft.

Hmm, I wonder if Front Sight has any. Of course they don't sell .22 rimfire but usually have a huge amount of 9MM and .223. I am fairly well stocked, except for .22LR which is getting dangerously close to only 13,000 rds.

Inventory was wiped out on the wholesale/distributor side also. We finished ordering the March pallet last Monday (was rushing to finish before the baby came), and over the 2 days we were in the hospital, inventory at just about all the warehouses disappeared and/or had substantial price increases. IDK about some of those price increases... in our experience, the ammo carried by these warehouses or larger online retailers was bought/negotiated way before the rush buying started. That being said, we’re not sure how things are going to look in May for the next pallet if inventory doesn’t restock to bring prices back down. As of now, the days of inventory glut and cheap cheap ammo seem to be gone.
Edit: Was told by one of the warehouses that manufacturers are shipping at higher costs now because of the demand. That’s where the price increase is coming from.

Thanks for the info. :shaka: Congrats on the baby.

Second one, if you know how much ammo you have, you don't have enough.

How does 1 gauge what 3 months of ammo is? If there is a shortage, I won't be shooting as much as normal, which is only once a month at HDF shoots/skill builders.

Trying to help a family member on the mainland find some low recoil buck this morning was not easy. I could only locate one place was not price gouging or sold out. They asked how much they should get, and I told them it is unlikely to lose its value over the coming months.

I just went young guns and there was at least 15 people in line buying something and a bunch others waiting to see a firearm
ammo shortage coming soon! :geekdanc:

Prices at wholesale level already reported going up.

Buds was the cheapest ammo this morning for CCI SV .22. It was at 4.4 cents a round. Now they are up to 7 cents a round. They don't ship. Everyone cheaper only has a couple of boxes and not worth the $15 to ship. Now prices vary from around 8 cents to 12 cents a round. This was just from this morning.
As soon as I get into town I'm buying powder and primers. I have enough 22 coming for a few months.

No one this forum does anything illegal or immoral. I'll be okay. No runs yet on powder and primers. If it starts I can just order some like I did the ammo. Having a hard address and family on the mainland helps a lot.

Hahaha! No problem! Too much time in North Dakota for him... not enough other people around to talk to. Baby is doing well, just trying to figure out the best options to keep him healthy... its been a weird week for everyone.

I think we're going to let UPS take the vast majority of that pallet when it comes in. The gun show ammo we took to UPS this afternoon, but we'll have to go back tomorrow to get the parcels accepted. We got an employee this afternoon who didn't understand UPS's own regulations (rather rude lady... if anyone has the pleasure of dealing with UPS on Lagoon Drive you know exactly which one I'm talking about). UPS on the mainland, and the UPS hazmat/dangerous goods department, will be in contact with the HNL Service Center tomorrow to straighten them out that the regulations do allow shipping ammunition UPS ground, intra-Oahu, ORMD. We had shipped some last year and actually last week... was one of those depends who you get at the counter problems. In a way though it will be a good learning experience for UPS here and will hopefully allow smoother sailing after the local office learns what their actual regulations are. Sorry about that delay... UPS's policy is actually really clearly written and available online (google: UPS ammunition shipping intra-oahu ormd and the page will come up), but there's always that one employee that makes customers pull tall heir hair out sometimes.
Shipping is a mess right now from the warehouses. It looks like 90% of that pallet has shipped and the last bit shouldn't be far behind. It might delay the pallet a week though... we were just lucky that the first 1/2 of the pallet had already shipped before the panic really set in around Wednesday or so.

Crunching The Numbers On The Ammo Sales Spike
https://bearingarms.com/cam-e/2020/03/17/crunching-numbers-ammo-sales-spike/
While many gun stores saw the increase in demand kick in last week, the folks at Ammo.com say they first started seeing a swelling demand back in late February, with a 53% increase in sales on February 23rd. By March 15th, the website says sales had increased by a staggering 276% percent.
When comparing 22 days worth of sales from February 23, 2020, through March 15, with sales from February 1, 2020, through February 22, our data shows these staggering statistics:
309% increase in revenue
78% increase in conversion rate
222% increase in transactions
77% increase in site traffic
27% increase in average order

If it gets that bad, I'd borrow a sailboat. Most those on Oahu don't even get a monthly visit from their owners.
Get to San Deigo, and hire some Mexicans to sail it back. Owner will probably never miss it.
Just make sure the fuel tank is full when you are done. Consider it Rent.
I don't think anybody around here knows how to sail a boat.

I don't understand this ammo shortage going on. Why do people need to buy so much ammo? Ranges will close down if things get worse. I don't see the logistics being affected to manufacture ammo. This is a temporary situation and things will be back to normal when the virus starts to clear. Is it because you see other people doing it so you have to do it too?
But then again people are hoarding TP and even worse, water.

Yup. F them. They have a considerable history of doing that. I personally remember some of the nonsense that they ran back in the run of 2012-2013 timeframe. Will NEVER shop with them.

It's the mentality where you see others buying it up and want to "get yours". Then there's the urge to try to "do something" to prepare for a situation that is really so fluid and lots of unknowns, but everyone "knows" that things will get worse.
-
Federal/CCI/Speer put out a statement saying they're going to increase production and to do so, will need to increase ammo prices.

Nobody that is real gun people buy from "Cheaper than dirt".
they are like Dicks.
You only, may appreciate this but every time I went in to REI, I always asked if they sold
hunting or fishing licenses.

SEC had 9mm AE for 199/case at the gun show. Today they had a pallet of the same stuff on the floor, it went up to $269/case. I'm glad I bought mine when I did.

Wow!!! :o
I bought some just before the show. A friend that works there mentioned that the next shipment was gonna be more expensive due to the increase in price from the distributor, but I didn't expect that big of a jump. I thought maybe $220-240 range.

TBH, everyone who owns a gun should have enough ammo already. Since there is no industry standard, I would say as long as you have enough ammo to load every mag that you have twice, then you're G2G. Just throwing that # out there (a few hundred rounds). Add in if SHTF, ranges will be closed, so it's not like you can go there anyways. It would be purely for self defense or hunting.
Do people expect to be in a gun fight like in A-Stan or Iraq? Even if you did use you're firearm for self defense, HPD would show up and arrest you for 2 days. At best case scenario, they release you pending investigation and confiscate that gun (single) anyways. The question is, would they take just the gun used, or all your guns and ammo?
People stocking up after a mass shooting is more understandable, because prices will rise. So they want to buy cheap while they can or some BS law passes. But for CV, a hurricane, or other natural disaster, no need stock up on more. Let alone pay such a higher mark up. Just wait.

My nephew texted me last night. He said he was needing some 5.56 in order to continue practice. I told him not to, but he did anyway. He bought 1,000 rounds of steel cased 5.56 for, wait for it, wait for it some more, just wait some more, ready?, okay, here goes he paid $365 including shipping. :wtf: :wtf: :wtf:
I looked and 2 hours before he purchased the same ammo on the same site it was priced at $250/1,000. I didn’t look the day before but I suspect it was probably around $200. Let the gouging begin.
-
It is also a good idea to have 5 to 10 rounds of common calibers of guns you don't own. In a SHTF situation, that may help you get a weapon that you do have a lots of rounds for.

Can you elaborate?
How does having 5-10 rds of ammo you can't use = acquiring a weapon for a different caliber?

Simple, your weapon may get damaged beyond repair. While scavenging you come across a discarded weapon or find one in a house you break into. You have ammo for it, which may enable you to hijack someone else's weapon that you do have a lot of ammo for. Remember this is during an anarchy situation where every man for himself.
-
Sale prices at gun show.
They had pallets of AE 9mm and .223 for sale weeks before the show, same pricing as at the show, 199/1K 9mm, 350/1K .223. I estimate they sold 2 full pallets of 9mm before the show. Doesn't matter now, it's $269 and it won't get any cheaper until after the election IF Trump wins.
I bought ammo to stock up before prices went up. SEC had 9mm for about 249-269 a case for most of last year. About 3-4 weeks ago the prices dropped to 199. When I asked about the gun show pricing about a week ago they told me that the prices would most likely go up because their cost went up, so I bought my supply. I would have bought more but I got a great deal on 1700 rounds of .38 so now I'm set for a while.
This time, I'm hanging on to the ammo, not profiteering as in years past.

Yep. Two is one ....
If you have a "ton" of 9mm, and only have one 9mm firearm, you're just daring Murphy's Law to cause your lone 9mm firearm to break.
Also, if you're counting on "coming across" another weapon, why not have a case of ammo for that gun? You seem to base your contingency plan for a broken gun on finding a non-9mm gun for with you have at least a few rds, AS WELL AS "coming across" someone with a 9mm you can actually "hijack" -- as if that person is not able to defend themselves and is ALONE. Having only 5-10 rds to match a "found" gun says you don't believe the odds of finding it are likely.
I imagine this strategy works great in your video games. :geekdanc:
What happens when that other person with a 9mm firearm finds you before you find another gun and decides to liberate you from all that useless 9mm ammo?
-

What makes you think I bought that ammo? I have a few 30-30, .308, 30-06, 7mm Rem Mag, .270 Win, 44 Mag, 38 Spec and a few more from guns I owned in the past. Less than 7 lbs total and all in a small box not taking up much space. Some I only have 2 rds, but I am not going to buy any. You have no idea how much training, guns or ammo I have. Having a FEW rds of ammo even for guns you DON'T have is suggested by several doomsday survival books and also recommended by Dr Piazza of Front Sight in one of his writings.
-
I would have assumed the ammo would be to barter with. Box 45 for food. Not box 45 for box 9, cause u could have just bought a box of 9 yourself.
Or buy spare parts for ur only handgun or another 9mm handgun.

I don't play video games and I have "tons" of ammo for the most common weapons you will find, 223/5.56 , 9MM and .22LR. I don't need tons of ammo for stuff I don't have. And if you would read what I said earlier, the sole purpose of having a few rds in common calibers is to have an operating weapon to help you acquire the weapon you want. But in an end of the world situation, most likely someone would just kill the person who had what they wanted instead of trying to hijack it from them.

Your end of the world scenario is based on what?
So, how many "common calibers" do you stockpile 5-10 rds?
I guess there would be no need for 10 rd capacity limits in the apocalypse if all you have are 5-10 rds of any given caliber.
Do you think 5-10 rds is enough to get a replacement for a broken firearm, or for that matter to avoid being killed, if someone with more than 100 rds with a working firearm wants your ammo?
I still don't understand how having a small amount of AMMO for weapon you have not "come across" is beneficial. Is it your belief that weapons of "common calibers" will be abundant in the future apocalypse simply based on them being "common" now?
Large groups will hoard any weapons they "come across" for survival, either to use against threats, to take what they want, or trade for what they need.
Tell you what. Forget everything I posted above. You do that. I'm sure you'll be fine if/when your only firearm for your ammo stash breaks. I'll even loan you a gun myself. Just send word that you have lots of ammo and no firearm for it, and I'll be right over!

I looked and 2 hours before he purchased the same ammo on the same site it was priced at $250/1,000. I didn’t look the day before but I suspect it was probably around $200. Let the gouging begin.
Yikes. I’m getting flashbacks from 2012-2013. Right around when I put together an AR to test with crappy ammo, like Tula. Then the price went up to like $330-350/1000. It was more than I was paying for 193. I haven’t been shooting 5.55-.223 as much recently, but I wouldn’t pay $365/1000 for 193 unless I really had to.
I saw some steel cases .223 at places like Aim and another and I want to say it was around 200-230/1000.
Hope .22 LE doesn’t do that. :(

The few rounds for when you need to Seppuku! With your enemies gun because your turd broke!

What's the deal with arguing about how someone decides they want to prep?
Because we are blessed with a few who are world class experts on every subject known to man who know the absolute best way to do anything.

If anyone here knows how much ammo they have, IT'S NOT ENOUGH!

You are too stupid and argumentative to have further discussion. I learned a long time ago not to argue with stupid people. Good night.
I said do whatever you want. That's me NOT ARGUING.
You're too stupid to tell an argument from agreement.

I have my .22 being delivered to my new house. I will need some powder, primers and Macsak Heads. I don’t see a run on that stuff yet. I’m trying to remain calm because I won’t allow myself to get caught with nothing again.

I hear ya. Unfortunate timing for me as well, but interruption of what is essentially a hobby, at least for me.
11 lbs of .22 lr is quite a bit, no? Mostly kidding, but some serious. . .

Eleven pounds is only 2.5 bricks or 1250 rounds. Not much. But I have already sold all my .22 because I am moving my and suitcases are going to be heavy to begin with. Also, it bugs the fuck out of me that the feds feel the need to check my luggage to make sure I’m not carrying 11 pounds 1 ounce of ammo so they can confiscate it. I just ordered over 5,000 rounds to be delivered to my new house. I have 3300 rounds of SV and 2500 rounds of HV coming. Flat shipping on the mainland is between $14-$20.
I probably won’t be able to get SD ammo when I arrive so I’ll need to make my own until things die down. But at least I can and I know how.

was at LGS yesterday, 556 sold out. 44mag, 357 still had plenty.

Roughly what are .38 and .357 going for? Haven't bought any in LOOOOOONG time but guess it's time to dust off the airweight

I hear ya. Not recommending chancing it, but I've never had the agent check my ammo quantity or weight.
I have some buddies in AZ. If you're in really dire need, hit me up and will see if they can assist. A couple are buddies from elementary school days.

Yesterday, Stuebs (in Hilo) was out of everything but birdshot and a few forlorn cases of .45ACP.

Starting to see 223 and 22LR come back in stock, but the cases are much higher now. For example, 223 Wolf Gold is about $120 a case increase and Federal AE 22LR is about $40 increase. With these increases, we’re unsure if the cases would still be “reasonably” priced in Hawaii to bring in at this time. The Wolf Gold would be about 42-43cpr range and the 22lr would be in the $27 a brick range. We’re leaning towards no on the 223 wolf gold, but wanted to put it out here to get a better idea (ie: would you still buy at that price if the alternative is nothing else available). It’s a really unfortunate increase but supply/demand we suppose.

Good to see stock coming back in.
I would bet that people would be willing to pay premium if you’d be able to procure.
I don’t think I’d pay a premium now in Wolf Gold. But that desire would probably change if the local stock doesn’t return.
Thank you for what you do for us!

In the previous 22LR shortage wasn't bricks selling for about $35?

thank you for bringing in ammo for the 2A community! :shaka:
I would rather buy the Federal AE, than the wolf gold with those increases. I can see people buying 22LR at that price, not too bad.
I hope it gets better soon

Do you have an ETA on the incoming pallet and what is the payment process?

I picked up a case of Wolf Gold a few months back when a local vendor had it in their order by mistake, so I picked it up for a good price. Haven't shot any of it yet, but I've heard that it is decent. My expectation is ammo that functions well, not low-moa. At least not for Wolf. ;D

I've shot both gold and steel. Both worked fine. The only I had with the steel was that it's super dirty. Shooting 30rds steel is like shooting 500rds brass in level of dirtyness. I'm also the kind of guy who cleans his rifle after every range day. So having to use extra elbow grease sucked. I don't mind paying more for brass now.
I wold be cautious of Tula steel. I haven't shot it, but there are enough reviews online of the primer end being ripped off by the extractor and the rest of the steel being stuck in the chamber end.

I've shot quite a bit of Wolf steel. Some issues with shooting with mid-length guns that are on the under-gassed side, but no problems with carbine length guns. Same for Tula. Read similar feedback on the Tula, but my personal experience is that as long as you clean your chamber before going back to brass and that you have a gun that isn't on the under-gassed side. I generally avoid Tula these days, but I would if it was cheap and I was running low on brass.

and I was running low on brass.
What is this phrase that you speak of? I do not know the term.

That pallet shipped in 2 parts. A couple of the cases got caught in the panic buy fulfillment delay so we decided to just sail the first half that came in rather than hold the entire pallet for those last parcels. The first part of the pallet should have docked yesterday (we hope) and the invoices for the ammo on that part will hopefully go out tomorrow and Friday so UPS can pick up on Monday. The parcels we're waiting for are supposed to ship by Friday so that second part would be docking the week after (April 8 week). UPS on the mainland have been slammed the last two weeks, but their network is still moving parcels pretty well under the circumstances.

That's how we feel too about the price increases. The $30 on the 22LR was "ok" but the $120 for Wolf Gold... yeah, no. We've seen a limited amount of Federal 223 also come back in briefly (really really briefly) and its looking like the American brands aren't having such a huge price spike; still an increase but not as much. About 1/2 as much of an increase. At any rate, hope things improve on the inventory side so prices can normalize a bit.
Hope you all are doing well. Didn't expect 2020 to be quite like this...

I haven't had any issues with the steel cased ammo.
I didn't test the wolf ammo yet, but these are the velocity numbers i got from a 14.5" Faxon gunner match series barrel, 223 Wylde, shooting Red Army Standard:
2,911
2,922
2,933
2,933
2,934
2,937
2,950
2,951
2,954
2,962
2,964
2,973
2,977
Average: 2,946.2 fps
Standard Deviation: 19.9 fps
Here is the same ammo, same day, out of a 16" Faxon pencil (non match series) barrel, 5.56 NATO chamber:
2,999
3,021
3,039
3,055
Average: 3,028.5 fps
Standard Deviation: 24.1 fps
The 16" barreled upper has had at least 6,000 rounds through it at the time of testing. I'm not sure if this makes a difference at all.
I was using a Caldwell chronograph set up at 10 feet from muzzle at Koko Head. As you can see, the RAS isn't really "under powered" as much as a lot of people claim. Velocity numbers are still decently close to m193 out of a 16" barrel

No experience with .223 Rem RAS ammo, but Tula 55 gr is advertised at 3241 fps. I've shot a bunch of both 55 gr and 62 gr and they seem to be pretty weak ammo. Or at least they didn't function well in my mid-length gas guns. That was way back when I had heavier springs and buffers, which I have gone away from. Didn't try Tula in carbine gas guns that I owned, at least at that time.
In recent experience, I have some Rem UMC .223 bulk packs that seemed to be underpowered. Not quite as bad as Tula, but did have some issues with at least one mid-length gas gun. Shot the same ammo in a few carbine gas guns and no problems. Interestingly, I've heard many folks say the same for PMC Bronze, but that ammo has been (or at least when I had more of it) awesome for classes and training.

i think the perceived "weakness" of the ammo could be a difference in the burn rate of the powder that they use.

i think the perceived "weakness" of the ammo could be a difference in the burn rate of the powder that they use.
As a wise friend once told me:
Faster-burning powders create peak pressure, sooner, but drop off very quickly, as well. Slower-burning powders take slightly longer to create peak pressure, but sustain pressure for a greater period of time. Both are bell curves, with more "energy" under the curve created by slower powder. So, all other things being equal, and presuming the powder in question is actually suitable for the cartridge being fired, slower powders WILL create more velocity...they exert "pressure" on the base of the bullet, longer.
I mean I took calculus in HS and college, don't want to deal with integrals when I'm shooting. Haha. Nah. Maybe one day I'll grow up and mature into a hand loader. ;D
